A) Yes/No questions
Hemos visto que para formar el interrogativo con el verbo TO BE solo necesitamos invertir el verbo y sujeto. “YOU ARE a student” cambia a
“ARE YOU a student?” en interrogative o pregunta.
Este tipo de preguntas se llaman YES/NO QUESTIONS y sirven para confirmar o denegar algo. Su nombre se debe al tipo de respuestas que
generan. Revise el siguiente cuadro.
AM I a teacher? Yes, you’re a teacher. No, you’re not a teacher Yes, you are. No, you aren’t.
ARE YOU a student? Yes, I’m a student. No, I’m not a student. Yes, I am. No, I’m not.
IS HE from Cajamarca? Yes, he is from Cajamarca. No, he’s not from Cajamarca. Yes, he is. No, he isn’t.
IS SHE in class? Yes, She is in class. No, she isn´t in class. Yes, she is. No, she isn’t.
IS IT your bag? Yes, it is my bag. No, it isn’t my bag. Yes, it is. No, it isn’t.
ARE WE from Cusco? Yes, you are from Cusco. No, you aren’t from Cusco. Yes, you are. No, you aren’t.
ARE YOU students? Yes, we are students. No, we aren’t students Yes, we are. No, we aren’t.
ARE THEY absent? Yes, they are absent. No, they’re not absent. Yes, they are. No, they aren´t.
Estas preguntas comienzan con un QUESTION WORD y la respuesta es una información desconocida para el que pregunta. Vea el siguiente
cuadro que presenta las QUESTIONS WORDS que debemos aprender por ahora.
WHO ¿Quién? (para identificar a la persona). WHO is your favorite singer? It’s Juan Gabriel.
WHAT ¿Qué? (para identificar un objeto). WHAT is your name? My name is Alice.
WHERE ¿Dónde? (para identificar lugar). WHERE are you from? I’m from Cajamarca.
WHEN ¿Cuándo?(para identificar el tiempo, fechas). WHEN is your birthday? It’s July 15th.
1. ¿Es posible usar CONTRACTION FORM en las preguntas y respuestas de tipo INFORMATION?
Estas palabras se refieren a los INDEFINITE ARTICLE que van delante de un sustantivo en singular para clasificarlo. Lea los siguientes ejemplos:
A
AN
A STUDENT (un estudiante)
AN ANIMAL (un animal)
A RULER (una regla) AN ERASER (un borrador)
Pregunta:
SUBJECT POSSESSIVE
POSSESSIVE OF NOUNS
PRONOUNS ADJECTIVES
I MY
YOU YOUR
HE HIS JORGE’S (de Jorge, su de él)
SHE HER CARMEN’S (de Carmen, su de ella)
IT ITS THE CAT’S (del gato)
WE OUR
YOU YOUR
THEY THEIR MY PARENTS’ (de mis padres)
Si el que posee es “Jorge o He”, entonces el possessive a usarse es “HIS”. Ejemplos: Jorge´s wife (la esposa de Jorge) = his wife (su esposa).
My parents’ house (la casa de mis padres) = Their house (su casa, la casa de ellos).
Ejemplos: I like pop music.
(Me gusta la música pop.) I don’t like jazz. (No me gusta el jazz). I get up at 6:00 a.m. every day. (Me levanto a las 6: de la mañana todos los
días.) I don’t get up at 6:00 on weekends. (No me levanto a las 6:00 los fines de semana.)
2. Revisemos el siguiente cuadro con la conjugación del SIMPLE PRESENT del verbo DRINK (beber) en afirmativo y negativo y responda las
siguientes preguntas.
AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE
I I
You You
do not
We drink water. We
(don’t)
You You
drink water.
They They
He He
does not
She drinks water. She
(doesn’t)
It It
En el caso del negativo, el verbo mantiene su forma original DRINK; pero necesita del verbo auxiliar DO para formar el negativo. Este se
transforma en DO NOT + VERB (para I, YOU, WE, THEY) y DOES NOT + VERB (para HE, SHE, IT). Como se puede apreciar, aquí también se
cumple la regla de la “S” de tercera persona singular (HE – SHE – IT) en el SIMPLE PRESENT: DOES.
3. “S” o “ES”
La mayoría de los verbos forma la tercera persona del singular en presente añadiendo una “S” a la forma simple del verbo. Sin embargo hay
otros a los que se les aumentará “ES”.
¿Cómo sabremos qué aumentar? Responderemos esta pregunta con lo que dice la regla para estos casos:
b) También tenemos los que terminan en “Y precedido de una consonante”. En este caso aumentaremos “ES” y cambiaremos la “Y” por
una “I” antes de aumentar el “ES”. Ejemplo:
Fly – Flies (volar)
c) Hay otros que cambiarán completamente. En esta oportunidad solamente aprenderemos el siguiente verbo: Have – has (tener).
4. Ahora fijemos nuestra atención en los siguientes cuadros que contienen los dos tipos de preguntas que hemos aprendido: YES/NO
QUESTIONS e INFORMATION QUESTION y sus respectivas respuestas.

FULL ANSWER SHORT ANSWER
Como se aprecia en el cuadro de las INFORMATION QUESTIONS, este tipo de pregunta siempre comienza con un QUESTION WORD (WHAT,
WHERE, WHEN, etc.) + DO/DOES + SUBJECT PRONOUN + VERB. La respuesta siempre es información desconocida para el que pregunta.
VIII. CAN
1. Usamos el modal verb CAN para hablar sobre nuestras habilidades o talentos.
2. Observe el siguiente cuadro y responda las preguntas.

5. I love you.
Ejemplo: I can’t play the guitar now. I’m
studying. The children are not at home. They are playing at the park.
Lea los ejemplos, observe la parte resaltada que se refiere al present continuous y responda:

Las expresiones There is / y There are se usan para describir lo que hay en algún lugar. Ejemplo:
a) There is va seguido de un sustantivo en ________________, mientras que there are va seguido de sustantivo en _______________.
Como esta expresión se forma con el verbo TO BE, usaremos el negativo e interrogativo tal como lo hacemos con este verbo. Ejemplos:
Negative: There isn’t a swimming pool in my house. There aren’t three bathrooms in my house.
Question: Is there milk in the refrigerator? Are there apples in the refrigerator?
Answers: Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t. Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.

XIII. COUNT AND UNCOUNT NOUNS, SOME vs. ANY
Los count nouns son sustantivos que se pueden contar por unidad, es decir pueden ser singular o plural. Ejemplos: an apple – 4 apples / a chair – 2
chairs.
Los uncountable nouns, en cambio no se pueden contar por unidad y tienen una sola forma. Ejemplos: some bread, some water, some milk
Some y any son determiners que van delante de los sustantivos count en plural o uncount. Generalmente, usamos some en oraciones afirmativas y
any en oraciones negativas o preguntas. Ejemplos:
● There is some bread in the kitchen. There are some apples on the table.
● There isn´t any milk in the refrigerator. There aren´t any students in the classroom.
● Do you need any sugar? Do you need any potatoes?
I I

They They
