Elementary Daily Lesson Plan

Subject/Focus: Science (Solids, Liquids, Gases, and their Properties)

Standards:
Content Expectations:
2-PSI-1: Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials
by their observational properties.
Objectives:
Content: Students will categorize properties of different pieces of matter. Students will identify if
a piece of matter is a solid, liquid or gas. Students listen to a book being read about solids,
liquids, and gases, and take a short quiz on what they learned. Students will locate items in the
classroom based on their properties.
Language: Students will discuss solids, liquids, gases, and their properties.
Materials/Resources:
poem charts
solid, liquid, and gas cutouts
properties chart (students have this already)
crayons
science journals
three items to identify (squishy ball, tens block, paperclip)
and corresponding handout to put in binder
iPads and headphones
scavenger hunt list (see attached)
printed instructions sheets (see attached)
Key Vocabulary:
solid / sólido
liquid / líquido
gas/ gas
properties / propiedades
Introduction/Anticipatory Set:
Bring the students to the carpet and review solids, liquids, and gases with them using the poems
and guided discussion. Remind the students of the properties chart we started last week. Explain
the different centers to the students (see below). Remind the students that these activities are to
help them get ready to take a test on solids, liquids, and gases very soon (likely the next day,
unless it is determined that they students are not ready).
Main Lesson:
Center 1: Students are given a completed properties chart. They must fill theirs out the rest of the
way in their science journals, and then take the next handout to identify 3 items based on their
properties.
Center 2: Students are given a scavenger hunt that lists properties of items. They must work
together to find items that match the properties described, and take a group picture of the items to
airdrop to iPad #27.
Center 3: Students are given the three poems and cut outs of different solids, liquids, and gases.
They must sort them, take a picture, and airdrop it to the teacher’s iPad (#27).
Center 4: Students will listen to a non-fiction book on EPIC, and then take a short quiz on the
content they were read. Their scores can be viewed via the teacher login for EPIC.
Closure:
Bring the students back together at the carpet and discuss each center with them: what was easy?
What was hard? What did they like/dislike? Most importantly, what did they learn or remember?
Remind the students that the test on everything we have been learning in science will be coming
up very soon.
Independent Practice/Homework:
There will be no homework or independent practice assigned after this lesson.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed on the following measures: their scavenger hunt screenshots, their
sorting screenshots, their completed journal pages, and their quizzes in EPIC. Students will also
be informally assessed throughout the centers via teacher observation.
Adaptations/Accommodations/Modifications:
Scaffolding will be in place at each center station: all centers will have printed instructions,
color-coded to help students work independently, and all centers will be verbally explained and
modeled before students work at them. Additionally, center 1 will have increased teacher
assistance and modeling. Center 4 will incorporate listening features for students who cannot
read in English or do not read as well in English, so that they are not held back from
understanding and reviewing the content.
