April 2018
The country’s aerodromes under KAA handled 24,991 aircraft landings and take-offs in
April 2018. This was about 6.5% higher than the number recorded same month last year.
In the period ending April 2018, the number of flights increased by about 1.8% when
compared to the traffic registered same period in the previous year.
The number of passengers served at the airports increased by about 14.6% from 829
thousand in April last year to 950 thousand same month this year. All stations apart from
the satellite airstrips registered improvements in numbers, but more so at JKIA, MIA,
EIA, KIA and Malindi.
Budget carriers such as Silverstone Air Services, Fly540 COM, Skyward Aviation and
Fly SAX among others boosted the passenger numbers on the domestic sector.
International traffic benefited from a growth in tourism and business related activities that
led to enhanced frequencies of existing legacy carriers’ as well new scheduled operators
in the major airports.
In the period ending April 2018, the number of passengers handled edged up by about
6.9% when compared to the traffic registered same period in the previous year.
The amount of cargo handled by the airports in April this year was estimated to have
been 28,358.9 tons, an improvement of about 33.8% when compared to the traffic
obtaining same month last year. This was mainly on account of cargo throughput at JKIA
which was based on returns from the transit shades that included transit cargo unlike in
the month under review last year.
The overall growth was mainly attributable to perceived recovery in the international
markets leading to more exports from JKIA. EIA also handled increased tonnage form
the Middle East. There was a perceived growth of ‘Miraa’ exports from Wilson Airport
to regional markets. Lokichoggio and Malindi airports did not handle any cargo in the
month under review.
In the period ending April 2018, the amount of cargo handled was estimated to have
improved by 28.8% when compared to the traffic registered same period in the previous
year.
JKIA handled 633,644 passengers in April this year, representing a growth of about
11.7% when compared to the traffic obtaining same month last year. In the same period,
aircraft movements numbered 9,159 which was 6.9% higher than the number recorded
same month last year. The amount of cargo handled was estimated to have improved by
about 35.5% to 26,706.7 tons, which may have been largely on account of inclusion of
transit cargo as captured by returns from the transit sheds.
In the international segment, there were new carriers in operation unlike in the period
under review last year. These included Air France passenger service, Skyward Aviation,
Jetways, Oman Air, Silkway and Silverstone Air Services, which added a significant
component in terms of flights and passengers to the system. Additionally some existing
airlines enhanced their frequencies by some significant margin. These included Kenya
Airways, Freedom Airlines, Malawian Airlines and Precision Air
Cargo traffic during the month under review was deemed to have improved mainly as a
result of enhanced international exports and imports, primarily to and from Europe.
JKIA registered 5.3%, 2.3% and 31.2% increases in passenger, aircraft and cargo traffic
movements respectively in the period ending April 2018 when compared to the traffic
obtaining same period last year.

MIA handled 118,139 passengers in April this year. This was an improvements of about
3.0% when compared to the traffic attained same month last year. Aircraft movements
numbered 2,109 which was a growth about 15.1% above that obtaining same month in
2017. The airport registered an estimated decline in cargo throughput of 27.4% from
Air Traffic Analysis- April 2018 Page 9 of 19
308.5 tons in April 2017 to an estimated 224.0 tons same month this year, based on the
returns obtained from the cargo shed.
The international counter performed well, particularly the European and the Indian Ocean
segments driven by an upsurge in leisure travel.
In the domestic segment, passenger traffic between MIA and Lamu improved
significantly supported by the operations of East African Safari Air and Skyward
Aviation. MIA-Ukunda route also performed well supported by the operations of
Mombasa Air Safaris and East African Safari Air, taking advantage of an upsurge in
leisure travel demand. However, the overall domestic traffic performance resulted in a
small contraction due to a decline on the MIA-Nairobi sector. This may have been partly
as a result of competition from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
MIA registered 1.3% and 10.6% growth in passenger and aircraft traffic but a drop of
4.3% in cargo movements in the period ending April 2018 when compared to the traffic
handled same time last year.

EIA provided services to 23,276 passengers in April 2018, which was a growth of about
18.1% when compared to the traffic obtaining same month last year. Aircraft movements
numbered 735 which was 6.7% higher than the number obtaining same month last year.
The amount of cargo handled was 1,151.26 tons, which was 19.1% higher than the
amount recorded same month in 2017.
While the international passenger movements remained low there was some growth in
April this year when compared to the movements same month last year. This was mainly
movements within the East and Central Africa region.
In the domestic segment, there was a notable growth in traffic to destinations other than
Nairobi, such as Lodwar. The main airlines operating to the airport such as Jambo Jet and
Skyward Aviation recorded increased traffic. This may have been informed by the
growing uptake of air travel resulting from competitive prices and convenience.
In terms of aircraft movements, there were increased scheduled flights arising mainly
from enhanced Skyward and Jambo Jet operations. There was also a notable growth in
general charter operations in the month under review.
The increase in the amount of cargo handled was solely as a result of enhanced imports of
various electronics and other merchandize from the Middle East.

Wilson Airport handled 63,659 passengers in April this year, which was an improvement
of about 63.4% when compared to the traffic obtaining same month in 2017. Aircraft
movements numbered 6,827 translating into a contraction of 5.2% when compared to the
traffic obtaining same month in 2017. The airport handled an estimated cargo throughput
of 275.86 tons which was a projected growth of 37.1% when compared to the traffic
obtaining same month last year. The projection was based on the recorded number of
aircraft movements in the international sector in the period under review.
The domestic sector also registered a visible growth in terms of passenger numbers. In
particular, the Wilson-Maasai Mara, Wilson-Ukunda, Wilson-Lamu, Wilson-Mombasa
and the Wilson-Malindi sectors recorded significant increase in passengers. These may
have benefited from enhanced scheduled operations by Skyward Aviation and Silverstone
Air Services, driven mainly by leisure dynamics. There was also some improvement in
the other domestic destinations particularly Vipingo.
The envisaged decline in cargo traffic may be as a result of constricted exports of ‘miraa’
to regional markets particularly Somalia during the month under review.
Wilson Airport registered 43.5% and 1.9% increases in passenger and aircraft numbers
but a 1.9% decline in cargo movements respectively in the period ending April 2018
when compared to the traffic handled same period last year.

The small growth in absolute passenger numbers was reflected in the international
counter, mainly on the Lokichoggio-South Sudan route. There was no cargo uplifts from
the airport during the month under review. The airport continued to experience declining
movements faced with the challenge of relocation of relief operations to Southern Sudan
bases. The growing prominence of the neighboring airport in Lodwar was also having an
impact on the operations of Lokichoggio Airport.
The airport registered 9.6% and 14.8% fewer passengers and aircraft movements
respectively and no cargo movements in the period ending April 2018 when compared to
the traffic handled same period last year.
