Reflective Essay

The assignment I am most proud of throughout my whole four years of high school

english learning is my research report I did for Mrs. Giapapas in my Sophomore year on

Anti-Bullying Strategies. I am most proud of this research report because I felt really connected

to my research I did and Mrs.Giapapas gave me really good feedback on my report . I think very

highly of this report because It is a subject that I can relate to and back up if asked questions on.

Now I will give the copy of the report itself here.

Anti-Bullying Strategies

(1) Are the Anti-Bullying strategies used by schools successful? I believe this is a big issue

in the schools now a days because there is so much bullying going on and i think it is a growing

problem on our school systems and it should be handled like how a big problem should be
handled. Some terms that the reader should know would be Bullying, Cyberbullying, Student

Profiling and Corporal Punishment. The history of this issue is that it's been in our schools for a

very long time and it's been evolving and growing into our electronic devices and this issue is

called cyberbullying and its a constant and new form of bullying. While proponents of

Anti-Bullying strategies claim that the school Anti-Bullying programs are working, the

adversaries of bullying argue that most school Anti-Bullying programs are useless.

(2) School Anti-Bullying programs are working in our schools today. School organizations

are claiming that these Anti-Bullying programs are working. According to the U.S Department

of education report released in 2011, only 8 percent of Anti-Bullying programs implemented in

U.S schools are evidenced based. It is saying that the Anti-Bullying programs are working and

that it's gone down to only 8 percent. After several high profile shootings, the United States

Secret Service did a study of the characteristics of the shooters, they found that 71 percent of the

perpetrators in school shootings have been victimized. It suggests that victims have been bullied

that they have to bring deadly violence into the problem. Most of the school Anti-Bullying

programs at schools are successful and are proven to work more efficiently.

(2) Most of the Anti-Bullying programs are useless in our school systems. A lot of people are

saying that these Anti-Bullying programs are useless in our schools and that they need to be

upgraded. “ It is actually legal to discriminate on the basis of weight and that sends a message
that bias, unfair treatment or bullying of the overweight is tolerable. This evidence is telling us

that it is okay for people to bully and discriminate on people who are overweight which is wrong

and it should not be legal to do that” ( ). “ Surprisingly the authors found that children who

attended schools with Anti-Bullying programs were more likely to experience bullying than

children who attended schools without such programs”. I think schools with Anti-Bullying

programs think that their schools are safe from bullying but really no school is safe from this

issue. Overall most people and students believe that these programs are not effective in our

schools. Most of the school anti-bullying programs are useless. A lot of people say that

anti-bullying programs do not work at all. In 1958, they assessed children ages 7-11 and found

28 percent of the participants were occasionally bullied and 15 percent were frequently bullied. I

think that no matter what percentage of people get bullied it is still being bullied and it is wrong

no matter what. “We found the kids who were victims of bullying didn’t manage to move up or

move on possibly because they are so used to being pushed down.” Bullying in the past affected

kids in the future and i think that is very unfortunate for them because they are scared to be

bullied again. Finally, I come to a conclusion that the school anti-bullying programs are useless

and that we see no difference in our schools. School Anti-Bullying programs are working.

School organizations are claiming that these Anti-Bullying programs are working. “Each day an

estimated 160,000 students miss school for fear of being bullied and 10 percent of students who
drop out of school do so because of repeated bullying.” Students are afraid of being bullied so

they want to miss school and that affects their education and still people don’t do anything about

bullies. “ In one classroom , a teacher instructed the class that mexican immigrants were to

blame for drug trafficking in the U.S. Following his comments, a mexican-american fifth grader

was targeted with racial slurs, harassed and then suspended for misconduct. It’s one thing to get

bullied but to bring racial slurs into it will make it worse and more hurtful to the person. The

school Anti-Bullying programs are having more success nowadays than before. While most

people think these anti-bullying strategies are successful and are making a difference in our

schools we have an opposing opinion about these programs are working for our schools. Some

pro viewpoints would be that the school Anti-Bullying programs are working. Now some con

points of view would be that these programs aren't solving any problems in our school. I think

the con side is a lot stronger than the Pro side because it has more people with stronger opinions

and they have great concerns about the people that get bullied on a basis. If people have been

bullied in any type of way they would understand because it’s something that everyone has gone

through in their life.

Parts of where I feel like I’ve really grown is the speaking, reading, and writing. I have

learned over the course of high school that it is better to type what you feel about a certain test

but to also keep in mind that you too are telling a story to people who would read these papers or

reports. Reading I know I have grown in because I really get into the articles or texts that we read

in class just recently we read an article about a boy who was bullied and killed over walking

differently than everyone else and that really got me connected to the article. Finally, I think I

have most improved on my speaking skills from my sophomore year because I speak more freely

now and I speak more clearly than before.

Where I see I need most growth in is my writing, language, and listening skills because

there is plenty of room for improvement whenever you see an opportunity for one . Firstly, I

think that my writing needs a little help in because still I find issues in my papers or reports that I

type or write. Second of all, My language skills need much more improvements because I still

can’t figure out some simple language ideas you can say. Third of all, the listening skills that I

have now are fair to okay only because sometimes I don’t comprehend some of the articles we

go over but still plenty of improvement needed. Finally, going over all these skills I realize that

improvements are needed.

Throughout my whole fours years here at GOHS ( Great Oak High School) I feel like

every year i have increased my knowledge and acquired new skills for the future to help me in

my future career and in college. In my first year of high school I took a video media arts class

that helped me with my social skills and taught me how to communicate with other people who

are now my closest friends. Second year of high school I joined the football team in which this

taught me how to be a team player and good teammate. My third year at Great Oak I decided to
take an advanced kinesiology class which really taught me so much about what the human body

can do under enormous amounts of stress and pain. Taking this course really opened my eyes to

what I wanted to do with my future and I want to become an RN ( Registered Nurse) and help

people when they are at their worse. In my final year of high school I look back at what this

wonderful school has done for me and I am beyond thankful for having the opportunity to have

attended a top ranking school.
