Hello, my name is Ingrid Oblanbloton. I work as a labor unionist and I am a

socialist. I follow the teachings of Karl Marx, a German journalist, philosopher,

and founder of the Marxist branch of socialism. His followers are called Marxists

or communists. The two main issues we socialists focus on are government

protection of workers from exploitation by property owners and government

ownership of industries. We question the sanctity of private property and support

industrial workers against their employers. We try to protect the interests of our

people against the government because we do not want to be treated poorly or

taken advantage of. We are not afraid to form unions and stand up for what we

believe in. We are critiques of capitalism.

Karl Marx believed that relentless competition in industrial capitalism would lead

to a society divided into a wealthy, powerful few, and a mass of exploited and

impoverished workers. This represents the element of political because it is a

form of government that we do not agree with. I believe that socialism is the best

form of government because it prevents people from wanting to rebel. Once the

people have rebelled against capitalism and have created a dictatorship of the

proletariat, the revolution by workers will spread the material benefits and

scientific progress achieved by the Industrial Revolution. Socialism will keep

people from rebelling because the resources of government and industry could be

harnessed to end poverty and injustice. I am for socialism because it treats

everyone fairly and prevents them from being exploited by the government.

Industrialization led to growing wealth and power of new industrial elites and the harsh

living and working conditions experienced by industrial workers. These working conditions led

to labor unions where there was the creation of the first social welfare policy, demands for voting

rights, and even for a revolutionary transformation. Labor unions were created to defend the

interest of members through strikes or negotiations with employers. Industrialization led to the

demand of a better government which led to the creation of socialism to create a just society for

everyone and prevent the gap between wealthy and poor from continuing or getting larger.

Nationalism and socialism have very different ideologies. Nationalism believes that

people’s membership in a nation is defined by a common culture and history as well as by

territory. It was a force of unity and provided a foundation for independent countries coming out

of colonialism. Socialism does not believe in the sanctity of private property while nationalism

does. Socialism also believes in being ruled as a dictatorship while nationalism believes that the

nation is ruled by its state. I believe that socialism is best because every citizen receives benefits

and prevents poverty among the people, while nationalism can still experience that separation

between wealthy and impoverished.
