A. What is building powerful vocabularly?

Vocabulary is all about words the words in a language or a special set of words you
are trying to learn. Generally building powerful vocabulary means more tahan learning new
word, it’s mean learning new ways to think about words. According Laflamme (1997),
vocabulary knowledge is the single most important factor contributing to reading
comprehension. with the number of vocabulary will be easier for us to understand everything.
Vocabulary is one of five core components of reading instruction that are essential to
successfully teach children how to read. These core components include phonemic
awareness, phonics and word study,fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension (National
Reading Panel, 2000). Vocabulary knowledgeis important because it encompasses all the
words we must knowto access our background knowledge, express our ideas and
communicate effectively, and learn about new concepts.

B. Kind of vocabulary
1. Active vocabulary
The active vocabulary of person consist of those word that he can use correctly in his
own speech and writing.
2. Passive vocabulary
The passive vocabulary of a person consists of those words which he recognizes when he
encounters them in print or in the speech of other.

C. The importance of learning vocabulary


1. Increasing your vocabulary allows you to use more descriptive words to
better communicate your thoughts.
2. Understanding the meaning of more words will allow you to better
understand information that you are reading or listening to (comprehension), thus increasing
your retention.
3. Having a larger vocabulary to call upon will help your verbal communication flow
and allow you to start eliminating noises such as, "umm" and "uhh".
4. Being able to use more colorful words in speaking to others will allow you to project
a more intelligent image.

D. Easy ways to improve our vocabularly
1. Read
The more you read especially novels and literary works, but also magazine newspaper,
etc. The more words you’ll be exposed to. As you read and uncover new words, use a
combination of attemopting to derive meaning from the context of the sentence as well as
from looking up the definition in a dictionary.
2. Keep a dictionary and thesaurus handy
When you uncover a new word, look it up in the dictionary to get both its pronunciation
and its meaning and go to the thesaurus and find similar words and phrases and their
opposites and learn the nuances among the words.
3. Use a journal
Keep a running list of the new words you discover so that you can refer back to the list
and slowly build them into your everday vocabulary and keeping a journal of all your new
words especially when you can see how many new words you’ve already learned.
4. Learn a word a day
Developing your own list of words to learn is a great technique many people use to learn
new words. This approach may be too rigid for some, so even if you do use this method, dont
feel you must learn a new word everyday.
5. Go back to your roots
Studying latin and greek roots. Latin and greek elements are a significant part of the
english language and a great tool for learning new words.
6. Play some games
Words games that challenge you and help you discover new meanings and new words
are a great and fun tool in your quest for expanding your vocabulary.
7. Engage in conversations
Simply talking with other people can help you learn discover new words.

E. There are strategies to guess unknown vocabulary


1. Guessing meaning from context in sentence or passage
It means that you use the text surrounding the word that you want to look for what the
meaning and you also can choose the words that make sense in sentences.
2. Using grammar to guess the word meaning

When you find a word in the sentences or passages you don’t know, look at the
grammatical structure of the sentences or passage. It can help you to know what the function
of the words; can be noun, verb, pronoun, adjective or adverb, etc.
3. Recognizing words that connect ideas
You need to pay attention about the words that content the writer’s ideas. Three useful
kinds of words that can be content the writer’s ideas there are pronouns, synonyms, and
summary words.
