Huck Fasteners
®

Engineered to help solve your biggest assembly challenges.

Alcoa is a trusted name in the automotive manufacturing world and has been leading the

industry in enhanced automobile performance for decades with new ideas and innovative

materials. The Huck® brand of precision engineered fasteners is known for superior vibration

resistance, strength, and long life, while Huck installation tooling provides high-performance

ease of use.

No matter what the challenge – assembly line productivity, manufacturing floor safety issues,

weight-related equipment performance, vibration-intensive applications, or harsh environments

where corrosion can erode joint integrity – Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings has the solution.

2
Huck® vs. Vibration
Even in the most vibration-intensive environments, Huck® fasteners maintain their structural integrity for
the life of the joint. Unlike conventional nuts and bolts, HuckBolts® are installed using direct tension and
swaging. This installation method helps ensure there are no gaps between nut and bolt threads – a common
potential source of loosening. HuckBolts feature full metal-to-metal contact between the swaged-on collar
and the pin. This unique swaged connection provides unwavering vibration resistance, even in the harshest,
vibration-filled applications.
Gap Elimination Comparison
When compared with conventional nuts
HuckBolt® Standard Bolt
and bolts, HuckBolts have a much larger
cross-sectional area and larger root radius,
resulting in a much stronger and more secure
joint. In fact, many HuckBolts have up to 30%
more bolt cross-sectional area, 5x the fatigue The swaged collar forms over the Regular nuts and bolts have gap, which

regular bolts.

Because HuckBolts are not subjected to torsion during installation, they can safely be taken to higher preload
values than conventional bolts. This results in higher clamp, higher strength, and ultimately, the highest level
of vibration resistance you can find.

Huck vs. Time

Huck fasteners are engineered for quick, easy installation. In fact, you can install a HuckBolt in 2 seconds or
less, saving valuable assembly time while optimizing productivity.

Because these engineered fasteners are installed using the direct-tension/swaged-on method, they provide
for a smooth, jolt-free installation. The potential for repetitive stress syndrome, often experienced with torque
wrench installations, is virtually eliminated. In addition, using Huck fasteners does not require highly trained
installation personnel, and provides for fast, safe, and accurate assembly.

Huck also helps you save time because checking your work is quick and easy. Huck BobTail fasteners were
®

designed with a swage-indicator symbol on the collar, so a quick visual inspection is all it takes to know if it
has been installed properly. In addition, digital read outs from the Huck Tru-Set™ system help ensure precise
installation on critical assembly jobs.

3
Huck® vs. Weight
Equipment performance is directly affected by weight. Saving weight during assembly is critical, especially when
working to meet ever-changing, mandated CAFE standards. HuckBolts can contribute to lightweighting of automotive
®

assemblies in two important ways.

First, because Huck fasteners offer higher clamp and tensile strength than conventional fasteners, fewer or smaller
diameter Huck fasteners can be used. This helps to reduce equipment weight, without loss of performance.

Second, using HuckBolts allows for the use of lighter-weight aluminum instead of steel in the joining process. While
welding aluminum has historically been prohibitive, the strong clamp performance of HuckBolt fasteners provides the
joining power to attach aluminum elements without welding.

Huck vs. Corrosion

HuckGuard™, applied in-house at Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings, provides a high level of corrosion
resistance for engineered fasteners.

Developed to protect HuckBolts® along with swaged collars and Huck 360 nuts, HuckGuard provides a strong, added
layer of corrosion resistance. HuckGuard for bolts is a zinc-rich base coat, plus an organic top coat that, when applied,
can help protect the integrity and the life of the joint. In fact, HuckBolts treated with HuckGuard can sustain over
1,000 hours of salt spray testing.

The test: two fasteners.

1,000 hours of salt spray.
One clear choice.
After six weeks of ASTM B117 salt spray exposure,
two bolts were compared side-by-side.

On the left: a conventional hot dip

galvanized bolt.
On the right: a Huck 360

bolt with new HuckGuard coating.

The challenge: 1,000 hours of salt
spray testing.
The difference: dramatic.
The choice is clear: HuckGuard protects
Huck bolts, collars and nuts from
harsh environments.

4
Huck® vs. Torque
Despite conventional wisdom, torquing on regular nuts and bolts does not deliver consistent clamp. When you
don’t have consistent clamp, you risk bolt failure. The bolt with the highest clamp can end up doing the work of
4 or 5 bolts, and as a result, prematurely fail. Structural integrity is compromised.

HuckBolts™, applied with direct tension, are the only way to guarantee you’ll get consistent clamp. To prove it,
Huck performed a series of tests on a variety of conventional nuts and bolts and found that even when torque
is consistent, clamp isn’t. Friction, in the form of dust, heat, and other elements you don’t see, gets in the way,
resulting in inconsistent clamp.

Huck vs. Welding

While welding has long been utilized in applications requiring a secure joint, today there are several strong reasons
to consider a proven alternative. That alternative is direct-tension, swaged on HuckBolts from Alcoa Fastening Systems
& Rings. Fastening with vibration-resistant HuckBolts instead of welding offers five key benefits over welding.
• Safety – welding can be dangerous due to the chance of fires from a random spark. Spent rods and
other remnants can cause safety hazards on the assembly floor, and interfere with worksite organization
and cleanliness.
• Simplicity – HuckBolts are easy to install.
• Speed – HuckBolts offer lightning-quick installation.
• Cost-Savings – HuckBolts don’t require costly skilled specialists to install. All they need is a quick visual
inspection to ensure a solid joint.

• Structural Integrity – HuckBolts offer Huck’s famous high level of vibration resistance, meaning a strong joint
that will perform for years to come.
