1. UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The UPS (Uninterruptible Power System) isolates the load from the AC mains supply, protecting
it from voltage drops, spikes, transients, RFI and frequency variations.
In the event of total or partial AC mains power failure, the UPS will continue,
without interruption, to provide power to the load from the sealed battery.
Duration will depend on battery capacity and output load.
When the AC mains supply is restored, the UPS automatically
recharges the batteries, ready for any power failure emergency.

1.1. SYSTEM’S COMPONENTS :

The UPS system is composed of two main components ; the control unit and the Battery unit.

1.2. CONTROL UNIT :

The control unit is a electronic unit dedicated to monitor the power supply line and to manage the
Battery unit.

-1 ) ON-Line Operation

Normal UPS operating mode. The connected loads are supplied from the mains via the Inverter. The
batteries are charged as necessary.
The inverter reliably filters mains disturbances and provides a stable, interference-free supply to the
load. In this operating mode, if a mains failure occurs, the UPS switches to battery operation. If an
overload or short circuit occurs at the UPS output, or if there is a fault in the inverter, the UPS
switches to bypass operation.

In this mode, the connected loads are supplied from the mains via the Inverter and the batteries are recharged
via the rectifier.
In the event of power failure, battery operation is automatically activated and supplies the loads interruption
free.

UPS Technical Specification V10 18/11/2013

M.O Page 10/59

-2) Battery operation

In the event of power failure, battery operation is automatically activated and supplies the loads
interruption free.
If the back-up time has not expired, the UPS automatically returns to on-line operation, once the
mains supply returns.

UPS Technical Specification V10 18/11/2013

M.O Page 11/59

-3) By-Pass operation

In this mode, the connected loads are supplied from the bypass mains via the electronic bypass.
The electronic bypass serves to further ensure power to the loads. If an overload exceeds the
capability of the UPS, it is automatically activated to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the loads.
From this operating mode, the UPS automatically returns to on-line operation after the fault is
corrected.

M.O Page 12/59

-4) Maintenance By-Pass

In this operating mode, the connected loads are supplied directly from the bypass mains supply.
The service bypass is used to supply the connected loads with voltage during maintenance work on the
UPS.

To ensure correct ventilation, leave nothing on top of the UPS.
Leave one meter of free space in front of the UPS for door opening.
The cubicle rests on four cylindrical feet, 40 mm in diameter, positioned in the four corners of the
cubicle to spread the weight.
If 600 mm of free space is not maintained above the UPS, abnormal temperature rise
may occur. The UPS must be installed in a room with restricted access (qualified personnel
only).
(*) The UPS can operate correctly back to the wall, but it is preferable to leave some space for easier
maintenance.

2.9. CONTROL UNIT AMBIENT SERVICE TEMPERATURE:

Characteristic of equipment Declared values

Ambient service temperature ( All UPS size ) - 0° C / +40° C

In case of close installation between Control unit and Battery unit or in case of installation inside the same room,
respect the most restrictive data (see next paragraph related to BATTERY UNIT Service Temp.).

2.10. BATTERY UNIT AMBIENT SERVICE TEMPERATURE:

Characteristic of equipment Declared values

Ambient service temperature (optimal condition )
+ 15 °C a + 25 °C
( All UPS size )
Ambient service temperature (with battery life reduction )
Up to 25 °C
( All UPS size )

Battery life predictions are based on an ambient temperature of 20°C

The design battery life at 20°C is up to 10 YEARS (80% remaining capacity)
Battery backup time is adversely affected by high and low temperatures. It is significantly reduced at
temperatures under 10°C.

Each increment of 10°C above 25°C reduces the expected battery life by 50%.

Above 40°C, battery manufacturers no longer guarantee operation

due to the risk of thermal runaway.

2.11. UPS ( CONTROL UNIT AND BATTERY UNIT ) VENTILATION :

Characteristic of equipment Declared values

Area ventilation ( only if a close area )
Min 200 m3/h
( All UPS size )

Note : Air enters through the bottom. Air exits through the top.

3. UPS INSTALLATION

The first installation on site and the first start-up

must be performed only by a UPS technician.

3.1. CONTROL UNIT POWER CONNECTION :

The cable can enter in the UPS from the bottom side.
For the electrical connection see the UPS manual and the Filler electrical drawings.

3.2. CONTROL UNIT AND BATTERY UNIT CONNECTION :

The cables are positioned in the bottom side.
For the electrical connection see the UPS manual and the Filler electrical drawings.

3.3. RECHARGING REQUIREMENTS :

If the UPS remains de-energised for a long period, we recommend that you energise the UPS for a
period of 24 hours, at least once every month. This charges the battery, thus avoiding possible
irreversible damage.
In every case the maximum de-energised time must not exceeded 5 month.

3.4. FILLER AND UPS SYGNALS EXCHANGE :

By a hardware signal exchange between filler’s control cabinet and the UPS Control unit,in the filler
HMI is possible monitoring the UPS status.
In case of fault or warning active on the UPS, a dedicated fault will appear on the filler HMI.
