Context

Juvenile justice in Queensland has seen a number of changes in recent years, particularly in relation to the
Youth Justice Act 1992. These changes have raised many issues in relation to the effectiveness of crime
prevention strategies including boot camps; naming and shaming; youth justice conferencing and
community based programs. In addition, the issue of repeat offenders, appropriate treatment and
consequences of juvenile offenders and the over-representation of indigenous offenders in the juvenile
justice system has continued to raise many equity and fairness questions within our society.

Task

Using the article and stimulus, which outlines some of the strategies and concepts used within our juvenile
justice system, and other relevant sources you are to conduct an analysis of the juvenile justice system in
Queensland in relation to at least one of the following areas:

 the contributing factors for juvenile crime

 consequences for young offenders
 dealing with repeat offenders
 indigenous offender rates
 the role of detention centres in the rehabilitation process
 recent amendments to the Youth Justice Act

The analysis should be focused on the current issues affecting relevant stakeholders within the juvenile
justice system.

You are to also evaluate the effectiveness of the relevant laws relating to juvenile justice in Queensland in
relation to your particular area chosen. You need to provide recommendations for improvements to the
juvenile justice system in relation to relevant stakeholders and your chosen area.
