April 2018

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to our Summer newsletter which, as always, is designed to let you know about the topics for
this term and to inform you about homework, PE and swimming.

This term our learning will revolve around the
theme of ‘Inventors and Innovators’. The
challenge question for the whole school is:
How c
an we think globally and act
locally?

Each class will contribute to the challenge with specific focus on Science, Maths and
Computing
If there is any way that you c an help us with this, either directly or via contacts you have
please get in touch!

▪ As Scientists we will learn what plants need to grow and plant flowering plants in our
playground to attract wildlife.
▪ As Artists we will use sculpture and create clay flowers and papier mache bees to share
ideas, experiences and imaginations. As designers we will build bee houses.
▪ As Geographers we will map areas for planting.
▪ As Users of technology we will research plants to grow in our school grounds and take
photos of the growing process.

Homework
As a Google school, we will continue setting our homework through Google
Classroom. If you are having any problems please visit the letters page of our
website where answers to Frequently Asked Questions are posted.
Although completion of homework is encouraged it is optional and children
will not be in trouble if they do not complete it. Please speak to us if you have
difficulty accessing the internet and would like homework provided on paper.
Children have the choice of handing their homework in on paper or online.

Reading- Please ensure your child is reading at home as often as possible. Please write a comment in their yellow
reading record book to let us know how your child is getting on with reading at home. It is really important that
your child brings their book bag and reading record book to school every day.
RWI spellings- Spellings will be given every Friday and a test will be completed in Read, Write Inc lessons on the
following Friday. The words from the following weeks story book will be given out as well so that the children can
practise reading them at home.
Maths - M aths will consist of a game or activity that will support them in their learning in Maths lessons for the
following week, or review what they have covered in the current week.

Phonics Screening 2017-18

The Year 1 phonics screening will take place during the week beginning the 11th June. Although it will be
a formal assessment of the children’s phonics knowledge, the children will not know it is a test as it will
feel an activity that they are used to. Materials to support your child towards this assessment will be
provided via Google Classroom, look out for this.
