An adjective is a word that describes, identifies or further defines a noun or a pronoun.

There
are thousands of adjectives available to describe how something feels, looks, sounds, tastes
and acts.

Adjectives describe or modify nouns. That is, adjectives add to the meaning of the nouns they modify. There
are two kinds of adjectives: descriptive adjectives and limiting adjectives.

1. Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives add color, size, and shape to persons, places and things.

Examples:

 Bright orange vegetables contain beta-carotene. (‘bright’ and ‘orange’ are adjectives that refer to
color and describe the noun vegetables)
 Green leafy vegetables contain minerals and vitamins. (‘green’ and ‘leafy’ are adjectives that refer to
color and shape and describe the noun vegetables)
 The tall thin girl is my sister. (‘tall’ and ‘thin’ are adjectives that refer to shape and describe the noun
girl)

2. Limiting Adjectives

Limiting adjectives describe how many, how much, which one, and whose.

Examples:

 The three boys in the car are my brothers. (‘Three’ is an adjective referring to number and modifies
‘boys’.)
 I found three small round stones in my shoe. (‘three’, ‘small’, ‘round’ are adjectives that refer to how
many, size and shape and describe the noun stones)
 This beautiful new bicycle is mine. (‘this’, ‘beautiful’, ‘new’ are adjectives that refer to ‘which one’ and
describe the noun bicycle)

An indefinite adjective is an adjective formed from an indefinite pronoun. The


most common indefinite pronouns are: all, any, anyone, anything, each,
everybody, everyone, everything, few, many, nobody, none, one, several, some,
somebody, and someone. When used as adjectives, these are known as
"indefinite adjectives".

Numeral Adjectives are those adjectives which are used to denote the number of nouns or
the order in which they stand. They are also commonly called Adjectivesof Number. In simpler
terms we can say that Adjective of numbers tell us the number of people or things and maintain
clarity by giving exact information.
pronominal. adjective. Of, relating to, or functioning as a pronoun. Resembling a pronoun, as
by specifying a person, place, or thing, while functioning primarily as another part of speech. His
in his choice is a pronominal adjective.

Degrees of comparison refers to adjectivesbeing written in different forms to compare one,


two or more nouns which are words describing persons, places and things. The three different
forms ofcomparison are the positive, the comparative and the superlative.
