Product Abstract

Student: Megan Kinner Date: June 11, 2017

Research Title: Organized Youth Sports: Success, Happiness, Sports

Purpose: To understand the benefits that come from participating in organized youth sports, as well as
the problems within it and how youth sports can be improved.

Expected Product or Outcomes: To inform parents, players, and coaches about the benefits of
organized youth sports, as well as its issues to ensure positive experiences for youth. Motivating them to
make improvements, like training coaches and making organized youth sports more accessible.

Novelty of Product: Organized youth sports impacts children’s lives everyday; it is parents and coaches
responsibility to make sure that impact is a positive one. This research focused on both the positives and
negatives encompassing youth sports, allowing for people to see the potential that lyes within it. The
importance of playing organized youth sports, and the problems within organized sports can be addressed
by training coaches how to coach, allowing sports to be accessible to everyone, and ensuring parents’
concerns are addressed. Distributing this research through flyers, an article and, a website, will allow for
parents, players, and coaches to obtain the information needed to improve organized youth sports through
making youth sports more accessible, and properly training coaches.

Audience: The intended audience of the project includes parents, and youth sports coaches.

Procedure or Method:

1. Intensively researched topics related to sports to decide what subject of sports to study; ultimately
deciding organized youth sports as my topic.
2. Secured advisors: Dr. Mark Hyman, a professor at George Washington University and recognized as
a Sports Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport and the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Donna Merkel, devoted the majority of her 22-year career to sports medicine with an emphasis on the
pediatric and adolescent athlete.
3. Read a collection of scholarly articles and journals on all aspects of organized youth sports: its
benefits and its issues.
4. Compiled over 30 annotations of scholarly articles and journals
5. Interviewed with professionals in the field of organized youth sports such as Mr. Bach, member or
the National Alliance for Youth Sports.
6. Discussed the great potential for organized youth sports to positively impact children’s lives and what
steps must be taken to improve it in a formal research paper.
7. Created two vetted surveys to asses how parents and players in Howard County feel about organized
youth sports.
8. Distributed surveys to parents and players in Howard County.
9. Analyzed preliminary data, correlations, and implications.
10. Designed two websites that covers the information gathered throughout the school year.
11. Constructed an informative Flyer that encompasses research on organized youth sports.
12. Composed an article containing my research and directing parents, coaches, and players to my
website.
13. Distributed a flyer, and an article to parents, players, and coaches in Maryland to educate them on
what they can do to improve the future of organized youth sports
