Comprehensive Lesson Plan

Basic Division
3rd Grade Math

Overview: By now the students should have their multiplication charts memorized and know
how to multiply. Well move on to basic division using what they know and state that its the
opposite of multiplication. Well go through the lesson explaining it then do activities to further
practice division problems.

Standards:
● Common core - Multiply and divide within 100
● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.7
● http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/3/OA/C/7/
● State standard - Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship
between multiplication and division
● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.B.5
● http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/3/OA/B/5/
Objectives:
Level 1: Knowledge
● The students will be able to write out the division equation
○ They will be able to recognize the numbers and problem to write out their
equation during the assignment
Level 2: Skill
● The students will be able to divide within 100
○ They will put their skill to the test during the assessment

Instruction:
1. The lesson will begin with me introducing myself and asking how the students
are.
2. Introduce the lesson topic, “today we will be learning how to divide”
3. Tell them they will we taking notes in their notebooks
4. Explain that it’s the opposite of multiplication and go over a simple problem
a. 5 x 10 = 50 but with division the equation will be 5 ÷50 = x
b. Go through the answer with them asking if they know then explain why the
answer would be 10. (its 10 because 5x10 equals 50 and you’re trying to
find what 50 divided by 5 is.
c. If the children still don't get it you can draw out dots explaining it. That
would look like the picture below. You will make 5 circles and put a dot in

each an repeat the dot cycle by going back to the first circle putting a dot

all the way up to 50 dots.

5.After a couple practice problems while explaining them if they're getting it have
them move on to the game.

Directions to the Sharing Cookies Activity

(They can work next to a partner but are still only responsible for the problems on their
sheet)
1. They will have so many cookies for a certain amount of friends and have to split
them up. Ex. 6 cookies for 4 friends. They're will have six cutout cookies to move
around and split into 4 groups. There will be 2 cookies in each group.
2. One they put them on the different “plates” they will glue them there
3. They will also write out the equation they did next to the picture. Ex. 6 ÷ 4 = 2
4. They will continue until their sheet is done and turn it in

6.If they finish their activity before class is over let them pick up their homework and
begin to work on that.
7. Five minutes before the bell rings for anyone not done tell them to turn in what
they have done and hand out the homework. Tell them it will be due tomorrow and we
will go over it at the beginning of class.

Differentiated Instruction:
Visual learners:
● Example on board with circles and dots. Also examples with worksheets and
food.
Kinesthetic learners:
● Cutting and gluing cookie pieces.

There's also different worksheets for the assignment. Some are easier and harder if
there's students who should be more challenged and students who need a little more
help.

Assessment: They will turn in their sharing cookies activity worksheet so I can see if
the student understood the material doing it right.
● Different level worksheets

Assignment: They will be given a worksheet with more problems splitting up food into
groups and writing equation for more practice. We will go over it at the beginning of
class tomorrow answering any questions they might have.

Materials: sharing cookies worksheet, cookie pieces, glue, pencils, homework

worksheet, notebook.

Technology: computer and printer.
