Bacteria are single celled organisms found in various places such as the air, water, soil,
plants and animals. They also find their homes in humans. Some species of bacteria are
essential to life. They break down waste products or incorporate atmospheric nitrogen
into organic compounds.

1632 – 1723 = Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch natural philosopher, first


observed bacteria under the microscope. Little conception of their
nature at that time.

1822 – 1895 = Louis Pasteur conceived the idea of living germs as the cause of

1876 = Robert Koch, a German bacteriologist, discovered the first


bacteria to be implicated in a disease, anthrax, a lethal disease of
