Question 1:
The main beam “AB” shown in Figure 1 supports a concrete slab and secondary beams spaced every
3.00 m. The bending moment induced by the total reaction of the secondary beams (D.L. = 6 t & L.L. =
6 t) are shown in the figure. It is required to design an economic IPE section for the main beam
performing all the necessary checks. (Hint: Calculate Cb for each third of the beam separately).

Question 2:
Assuming the main beam “AB” shown in Figure 1 is connected to a steel column (IPE 600) at the left
end “A”. It is required to design an extended end plate moment connection between the main beam
and column at “A” using pretensionned M16 bolts grade 10.9. The design should include the design
of bolts and thickness of head plate. Design of weld is not required.

Question 3:
Figure 2 shows four different cases for steel columns. It is required to calculate Cb and Cm for each
case.

Question 4:
A cantilever steel column is supporting double cantilever beams in two perpendicular directions, as
shown in Figure 3a. The column height is 6.0 m and is composed of two IPE 400, as shown in Figure
3b. The indicated load combination of dead and total (dead and live) loads induces Mx = My = 4.60
m.t. and N. = 18.0 t. It is required to check the safety of the given cross section for the column.
