QUESTION: How intensive readings differ from Extensive reading?

Signature:………….
Reading is the process of passing your eyes through written material to examine and interpret the

words and sentence in the material to get knowledge. This can be skimming, scanning, intensive

and extensive. The following is the different between intensive reading and extensive reading as

explained bellow.

Intensive reading is the reading in which you read with concentration and great care in order to

understand the meaning of what you need. This is necessary for legal documents such as

financial documents, academic and anything to do with business .While extensive reading is the

reading in which you read as many different kind of books or paper as you can chiefly for

pleasure and needing a general understand of content.

Also intensive reading covers narrow area while the extensive reading covers large area. The

intensive reading always is limited and does not allow or give a chance for the learner to find

material from other source. Example for student, the intensive reading does not provide a chance

to find the topic which she or he likes. While extensive reading involve many source of

materials. The extensive reading gives the chance to the learner to find the sources of material

from different area .Example for a student is able to find the kind of topic which is good for him

or her.

Again in case of student activities the intensive reading is not complex while the extensive

reading is complex. The intensive reading is limited hence the student will learn only one source

of materials. So when the question come the students will be able to answer the question

according to what she or he understand from that topic according to the instruction of teacher or
lecture .While extensive reading the student required to write summary and do representation

after reading different article or passage. So this is complex compared to intensive.

The intensive reading involves the usage of dictionary while extensive reading the dictionary is

not used. In intensive reading the learner should write down on the paper vocabulary and

checked later on the dictionary. This will enable the learner to understand the conveyed massage.

This is according to the BELL (1998) who said that the student will focus only on the language if

they always consult the dictionary every time they find an unfamiliar word. They will not

understand the conveyed massage. While in extensive reading the learner when learn and meet

with vocabulary he or she concentrates in dictionary. This will reduce the concentration of

learner.

All in all extension reading can broaden student knowledge more than intensive. Because in the

extensive reading the student should find many source of materials from a given topic and make

a summary from what she or he reads and then do representation which lead to minimize the

usage of dictionary .While the extensive reading are more limited and activities depend on the

guidance of the teacher so this does not broaden knowledge.
