COURSE DESCRIPTION Experiments in routine water quality analysis and environmental engineering
applications
UNITS 1 Unit
PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE CE 364
COURSE OUTCOMES The purpose of CE 365 is to provide exposure to experiments in routine water quality analysis
and environmental engineering applications as well as data analysis techniques used to interpret these data. The course
complements material covered in CE 364 by offering a hands-on experience and going into greater depth in select
topics. Upon completion of the course, the student will
a) have experience in several relevant routine water quality measurements;
b) have a working knowledge of the tools and techniques utilized in the water quality laboratory
c) have an understanding of the techniques used to interpret experimental data; and
d) be able to prepare a well written report of results, including the use of appropriate tables and graphics.
STUDENT OUTCOMES This course satisfies the following CE program student outcomes:
➢ ability to conduct field observations and experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data (Outcome
b)
➢ ability to function on multidisciplinary teams (Outcome d)
➢ ability to communicate effectively, in written, oral and graphical formats (Outcome g)
➢ ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
(Outcome k)
The overall grade in this course is a combination of exams and reports as shown below:
Laboratory reports 60%
Midterm exam 10%
Final exam 15%
Attendance, safety and workbench cleanness 10%
Field trips 5%
Final grades are assigned as: A ≥ 90%; B ≥ 80%; C ≥ 65%; D ≥ 55%; F < 55%
the report. All reports are submitted at the beginning of class (by 2 pm) on beachboard. The report submitted after the
specified time will be graded as zero.
EXAMINATIONS
Exams are closed book, unless specified otherwise. Please, note that the midterm date maybe subject to change.
The instructor will notify students at least two weeks in advance. The final exam is followed the university final
exam schedule. The exams will cover the material discussed in the preceding weeks, as listed in the course outline.
Exam grades will only be changed if a mistake or computational error in grading was made by the instructor. Cheating
is expressly forbidden. If evidence indicates that one or more students cheated on an exam, the exams will be scored a
zero. Make-up exams will not be allowed, unless prior approval has been granted or extremely extenuating
circumstances exist. A letter of explanation or a doctor statement may be required. It is the student’s responsibility to
notify the instructor in advance of the need for accommodation of a disability.
CALCULATOR POLICY
To protect the integrity of exams, there is a limit on types of calculators you may bring to the exam. Calculator models
acceptable for use during exams and quizzes are as follows: all Casio fx-115 models, all TI-30X and TI-36X models,
HP 33S and HP 35S. The calculator must contain the previously mentioned number in its model name (e.g., Casio fx-
115 MS PLUS, TI-30X IIB). No other calculators are allowed. This policy is identical to the NCEES policy for
calculators allowed on the PE and FE exams. The NCEES policy can be found here:
http://www.ncees.org/Exams/Exam-day_policies/Calculator_policy.php .
ATTENDANCE
Class attendance is mandatory. If the student is absent in any lab sections, the report will not be graded unless prior
approval has been granted or extremely extenuating circumstances exist earlier. Make-up experiments will not be
allowed.
UNIVERSITY POLICIES
The university Withdrawal Policy, as listed in the course catalog, will be enforced. Withdrawals after the second week
will require a serious and compelling reason and will require the additional signature of the department chair.
Withdrawals in the final three weeks of the course will only be permitted in the event serious illness and accident.
Students are limited to a maximum of 18 units that they can withdraw from (after the 2nd week) over their academic
career. Additionally, students are allowed to repeat a maximum of 16 units for grade forgiveness, and an additional 12
units of grade averaging.
