10. (3pts) About 70% percent of earth is covered in water, making 30% percent of earth
potentially habitable by humans. Earth can be modeled as a sphere with diameter 12,700
km. There are 7.1 billion people in the world. What is the population density of potentially
habitable earth?

a. Approximately 5 people per km2

b. Approximately 50 people per km2
c. Approximately 500 people per km2
d. Approximately 5000 people per km2

5
11. (3pts) A farmer wants to buy between 90 and 100 acres of land. He is interested in a
rectangular piece of land that is 1,500 yards long and 300 yards wide. The piece of land is
being sold as one complete unit for $87,000. If the farmer does not want to spend more
than $900 an acre, does the land meet all of his requirements? (1 acre ≈43,560 ft2)
a. Yes, the amount of land satisfies his needs, and the price is low enough.
b. No, the price is low enough, but there is too much land.
c. No, the price is low enough, but there is not enough land.
d. No, the amount of land satisfices what he needs, but the price is too high.

12.(2pts) Bean beetles are a common bug used for scientific experiments because they are
easy to keep and can survive in very dense populations. However, if more than 50 bean
beetles are kept in one petri dish, their offspring will be born with the ability to fly so that
they can disperse to a less dense area. Tommy is running two experiments, one with 12
males and 36 females in petri dish A, and 40 males and 18 females in petri dish B. Which
petri dish is most likely to produce flying offspring?

a. Petri Dish A; because there are more females than males so they can produce
more offspring
b. Petri Dish A; because the density is higher than the density of Petri Dish B
c. Petri Dish B; because the density is greater than 50 bean beetles per dish
d. Petri Dish A and Petri Dish B; because there are males and females in both
dishes and they can produce offspring

Free Response

For the following free response problems, use the information given to answer all
questions in each problem. Show all work so that your thought process is clear. Partial
credit is available.

16.(4pts) At the local zoo, the largest enclosure is 1.2 km by 1.3 km and contains 4
West African Giraffes, 3 Zebras, 3 Ostriches, and 4 gazels. Draw a model of the
enclosure with the animals and give its population density. Round to two decimal places.

17.(5pts) The FDA regulations say that to be considered apple juice, a liquid must be at
least 10% natural juice from an apple. If Juice Co has an order for 500 gallons of apple
juice, and each apple gives .005 cubic feet of juice, how many apples will be needed to
fill this order? Explain your reasoning. (Hint: One gallon is 0.134 cubic feet.)

18.(4pts) Tommy hears one of his friends say “muscle weighs more than fat,” but he’s
confused because 5 pounds of fat is the same weight as 5 pounds of muscle. How could
you explain to Tommy what density is and how it plays a part in this poorly worded
common phrase?

19.(4pts) Martha’s homemade lemonade requires 2 cups of sugar per gallon of

lemonade. Martha plans on making 20 gallons for a yard sale. Sugar costs $2.99 per
pint, so Martha will spend __________ on sugar. Explain your reasoning. (Keep in mind
sugar is prepackaged and Martha cannot buy a fraction of a pint.)

9
20.(5pts) Mr. Fontenot planted four types of soybeans on his land in order to compare
overall cost (for planting and harvesting) and crop harvest. The table shows the number
of acres planted, the cost per acre, and the number of bushels of soybeans produced for
the different types of soybeans.

Type of Soybean Number of Acres Cost (per acre) to Number of Bushels

Planted Harvest Produced

A 200 $174.70 9,000

B 150 $180.90 7,500

C 100 $192.40 5,900

D 75 $204.00 4,500

Regulations specify that Mr. Fontenot cannot devote more than 80% of a field to one
particular type of soybean. He wants to design a field so that he can harvest the most
soybeans for the lowest cost. What is the best design plan for Mr. Fontenot’s 525 acres?
Include specific details about which soybeans you chose, how many acres of each type
should be planted, and why you chose those soybeans.
