Hello Simi,
A ached are work instruc ons for disassembly and installa on of the Ac veStep. Note the following precau ons:
· Most important! It can be very difficult to separate the security arch from its bases. This is due to a ght fit
between the aluminum bung connec ng the two pieces. Before the move, check that the arch can be easily
separated from the base. If not, Simbex has a tool for removing the arch. If there is a ght fit, send the aluminum
bung connector back to Simbex and I can shave it down so that the installa on is much easier.
· The IMU cable runs along the security arch post near the treadmill. Pay special a en on when cu ng away the
foam fabric.
· I suggest moving the treadmill on its side using two 4-wheeled dollies
· A er installa on, remove the top cover of the treadmill power head and make sure electronic components did
not become loose during the move.
Lastly, if you are interested, Simbex can provide a quote for disassembly and installa on of the Ac veStep. I highly
recommend that the Ac veStep be inspected a er the move.
For my records, can you provide the new address for the Ac veStep? As there are mul ple Ac veSteps at UIC, which
lab is moving the Ac veStep?
-Eric
Note that the bung may have a flat spot on one side to allow clearance for the welded bead on the inside of the security
post.

Hi Eric,
The ActiveStep is not being moved, it was recently disconnected and we are putting it back together. We have a dual belt
Active step and I just wanted to know if I was plugging the encoder into the correct inputs.

Our president (Rick Greenwald) asked me to reach out to see what support we can provide for the Ac veStep Dual-
Belt. I hear that you are having difficul es with the computer. Do you suspect the hard drive is failing or
contaminated with a virus?
Please feel free to call me if you would like to discuss this further.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for reaching out to us. My name is Simi and I am the senior doctoral student in Dr. Grabiner's lab. I will be
working with you to fix our computer issue.
The issue with the computer is that it is unable to boot the operating system (Windows XP) because the registry file is
corrupted. Before this happened, the computer was also running very slowly.
So, we have decided to purchase a new computer which will be compatible with the drivers and software necessary to
run the ActiveStep Dual Belt.
To do this, we will need your help deciding on the appropriate computer and installing the software and drivers once the
computer is purchased.
Regards,

Hello Simi,
Was the exis ng computer running on WinXP? The most streamlined approach would be to purchase a computer
with the same default opera ng system. I men on this because older drivers for LabVIEW (which the Ac veStep
program is founded on) will likely be incompa ble with Windows 7, 10, or 11.
Have you tried inser ng the hard drive into another computer (as a slave or usb drive) to see if you can read the
contents? If you are willing to send the hard drive back to me, I may be able to copy over the database and program
files. I will have to look in our archives to see if I can iden fy which version of so ware you are on. You won’t be able
to update the so ware as we haven’t extended compa bility for dual-belt beyond your so ware release. If you
happen to have installa on CDs or wrote down the latest so ware update, that would help.
A er making a clone of the drive, you could also try repairing windows to fix the registry errors.
Feel free to call if you would like to discuss op ons over the phone.
-Eric

Hi Eric,
Yes, the previous computer was running WinXP. I will look into suitable desktops which run XP.
I haven't tried to read the hard drive from a different computer. I will do that on Monday. If I am able to read the hard drive,
will the next step be to copy the database and program files and then download (and reinstall) them onto the new
computer? Or will I need to clone the drive?
Also, I will give you a call on Monday if we need help extracting the drive and reading it.

Simi

Hello Simi,
The first step I would propose is copying the database. From there I should be able to discern what version of
so ware you are on and look in our archives for a backup. Unfortunately, the so ware must be installed from
scratch, not just copied over.
I would not advise running the program under a WinXP shell as the LabVIEW drivers will likely throw an error. The
computer will also need to be 32-bit, not 64. I may have a suitable used computer here if you have trouble finding
one (but I would need approval from management to release it).
Copy the database from C:\Program Files\Ac veStep\Ac veStep.db to the p site below, and no fy me when it is up.
ftp://ftp2.simbex.com
username: ac vestep
password: Ac veStep2011
To access the p site, open windows explorer and type the p site into the address field:
Thank you,
Eric
And I will let you know if I have a hard time getting a computer.
Regards,
Simisola O. Oludare
Hi all,
Kevin and I are going to work on removing the hard drive and reading it on monday around 10am.

Hi Simi,
Mark
Mark D. Grabiner, PhD
Hi Mark,
It is. The software and drivers need windows xp. A work around is that we can run windows xp mode on windows 7.
However, Eric thinks that there will be an error from labview due to incompatibility.
I will check with NI to see if the work around is valid for the hardware and drivers we have.
Other options:
-- Buy a refurbished desktop with no os and download Windows xp onto it. I found a refurbished pc for $100.
-- Eric offered an old computer. He has to check with management but he can get that to us.
Regards,
Simisola O. Oludare
Hi Eric,
I have begun uploading the database onto the ftp site. It will be completely uploaded within the hour.
I found our windows xp installation cd so I am going to try reinstalling windows xp onto the old computer to see if that
fixes the issue.

Simi

Hi Eric,
I was unable to repair or reinstall xp. My screen stays stuck on the screen attached in the email.
I think our best bet will be to get a new computer. Is it totally impossible to reinstall the software via the ActiveStep files
from the previous computer? There is a folder with the Release 2.5.2 Installation files.
Regards,
Simi
[Quoted text hidden]
One last thing: the pc has an NI PCI 6220 board connected to the mother board.
In this case, will the best bet be just to buy a new hard drive and install it?

Simi

Hello Simi,
Apologies in the delay (I was out sick yesterday). Your database is readable which is a good sign. I have located an
installa on package for the Ac veStep so ware you referenced (2.5.2). What mailing address should I use? I cannot
guarantee how complete the installa on disk is, as addi onal configura on may be required which could stump us. I
s ll think your best op on is to repair windows if you can find a way to do it. It’s a good sign that you reached the
Welcome to Setup screen. Try pressing enter to set up Windows XP (refer to the link below to reinstall windows
without destroying your data). Let it sit for 4 hours and see if any progress is made. I assume the screen you sent me
is where it hangs up? If it is on another screen, let me know.

-Install a new hard drive and set the exis ng drive to slave (you may need to change the drive’s jumpers).
-Determine if there is addi onal configura on required (this may pose some difficulty as I am unfamiliar with
the dual-boot Ac veStep).

Hello Simi,
Ac veStep Installa on DVD will be shipped out today. Can you confirm a DVD reader is installed (not just a CD
reader)?
-Eric
Hi Eric,
The computer does not have a dvd reader. At least, it doesn't say so on the exterior of the disc drive.
Can you send it as a cd instead?
Regards,
Simisola O. Oludare
Hello Simi,
The installa on files add up to 3.2GB. Can you read the contents off the DVD from another computer then transfer
using a USB drive or network connec on?

Before our mee ng, could you copy the old database (ac vestep.db) to the desktop? Are you able to install the old

I am having difficulties accessing websites besides bing and Microsoft sites on the new computer. I think is due to the

I need to update the os to windows xp sp2 to get the latest version of ie.
