OVERVIEW - SAP HANA AGENT
SAP HANA (High-Performance Analytic Appliance) uses an In-Memory Database technology that processes massive
amount of real-time data in a short span of time. Using the In-Memory computing engine, HANA processes data
stored in RAM as opposed to reading it from a disk. This leads to instantaneous results from customer transactions
and data analyses.
Commvault software provides a simplified end-to-end backup and recovery solution for both large scale single node
and multi-node SAP HANA environments. It uses the SAP Backint interface program to back up the data directly to
the attached media. In case of a data loss due to hardware failure, natural disaster, accidental deletion, or corruption
of data, you can restore the backed up data and the log files directly from the media using the SAP Backint interface
program. This reduces complexity, human intervention and the risk of data loss.
SAP HANA Studio is the most common tool used to backup and recover HANA databases because it is pre-installed
on SAP HANA. It is used by administrators to administer activities, such as to start and stop services, monitor the
system, configure system settings, and manage users and authorizations. SAP HANA Studio is a client environment
which can be used to access the SAP HANA database located in the same environment or at a remote location.

Online Full Backup
This agent provides the flexibility to backup
the SAP HANA databases in different
environments. This is very essential since the
data is subjected to constant changes.
You can perform an online full backup of the
entire database at any point of time.
Database Recovery
In case of data loss, SAP HANA restores a
recent state of the lost database to a
point-in-time, to a specific data backup, to
a specific log position or to the most
recent backup.
Automatic Log Backup
Log backups should be automatically configured in the SAP HANA Studio
Interface. You can specify timeouts for the log backups. Timeout refers to
the time interval after which the logs are automatically backed up.
However, the log backups can also start before the specified timeout if the
log segments are full or if the database services are restarted. The data
backups and the log backups are independent of each other.
Command Line Support
Backup and restore operations can be initiated from the SAP command
line as per the requirements. The iDataAgent is fully integrated with the
SAP HANA database using the SAP HANA Studio Interface or the hdbsql
command.

Interface.

primary server in the event of a failover.

Selective Online Full Backup

A selective online full backup is a backup taken when the database is online. The backed up data is
copied to a selective copy, which you can use for a restore. This backup is useful in disaster recovery
scenarios because the data and logs are stored together

Command Line Support

You can initiate backup and restore operations from the SAP command line. The SAP Oracle Agent
is fully integrated with the SAP on Oracle database through BR*TOOLS.
In addition to the SAP command line, you can also perform backup and restore operations from the
command line interface by using XML.You also have facility to save the operations as script files and
execute them from the command line.

Backup and Recovery Failovers
If a MediaAgent used for a backup or a restore operation fails, then the operation is automatically
resumed on alternate MediaAgents. The backup or the restore job then starts from the beginning.
This is useful for backups and restores on large SAP databases.
If the network goes down, then the backup and the restore jobs are resumed on alternate data
paths. If there is a device failure, then the jobs are automatically switched to alternate disk and tape
drives.

automatically or manually as per the options set up in the
database. These logs can be applied to an online backup
to recover the database to the current point-in-time.

Selective Online Full Backup
Selective online full backup is run when the MaxDB
database is online and the backup job is copied to a
selective copy. On successful completion of the full
backup job, you can select, store and protect your data
on a secondary copy for future restores in a viable and
economic way.

Command Line Support

Backup and restore operations can be initiated from the SAP command line as per SAP requirements. The iDataAgent is
fully integrated with the SAP MAXDB database using DBM CLI (a database management tool provided by SAP; it supports
backup and restore operations of database and parameter files using BACKINT interface from SAP Command Line).

SAP Archive Link agent provides a versatile data repository solution that can be integrated with the SAP Archive software. The
powerful architecture provides flexible implementation options to suit diverse functional domains. The Archive Link agent provides a
web service interface through which you can access the backed up data.
You can deploy the SAP Archive Link agent in one of the following ways:
The software provides a ready-to-use integration with SAP Archive software. You can link the SAP Archive software to SAP Archive
Link agent and use the agent as the SAP Archive repository.
Use the standard user interface available with the Commvault suite.
With V11 SP7 and later service packs, for new installations, the SAP Archive Link agent uses Commvault ObjectStore repository to
store the SAP Archive data. Based on the backup schedules defined for the ObjectStore client, the software moves the files to the
ObjectStore.
For existing SAP Archive Link clients that have V10 or V11 SP6 and earlier service packs, the SAP Archive Link agent uses UNIX file
system backups and stores the index information of the backed up data in a PostgreSQL database.
In both the cases, the SAP Archive Link solution is supported by the CommServe and MediaAgent at the backend and provides
sophisticated storage management features such as encryption, compression, deduplication, retention, and data aging.
