"He also put forward a �psychology of reason,� which is the title of one of his
articles.14 In this article, published one year after La formation de l�esprit
scientifique, he defended his idea of �polemic reason� against Kantian
architectonic reason. His polemic reason functions by fighting against obstacles,
and it is in continuous change and movement. For Bachelard, the �crises� which
modern science undergoes so frequently trigger scientific change, and for this
reason they are instructive. They put in motion again knowledge which has become
too static, and has come to appear axiomatic by way of recurrence, that is by
hiding the process which has led to it. Elsewhere Bachelard argued in favour of a
�depsychologisation� of knowledge and defended himself against the �charge of
