SPOILER CONTROL SYSTEM - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. General
A. The spoiler control system must be depressurized to prevent
injury to personnel working in the area of the spoilers and
wing trailing edge areas. Caution must be exercised to locate
maintenance stands and equipment beyond the spoiler travel
limits.
WARNING : PRESSURIZING HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS WILL SUPPLY POWER TO
RUDDER, AILERON, ELEVATOR, SPOILER, SPEED BRAKE,
TRAILING EDGE AND LEADING FLAP SYSTEMS. CARE SHOULD
BE TAKEN TO ISOLATE OR TAG SYSTEMS NOT BEING TESTED
TO PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONNEL OR DAMAGE TO AIRPLANE
AND EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION : AT LEAST 250 GALLONS OF FUEL ARE REQUIRED IN THE NO.
1 FUEL TANK TO PROVIDE HYDRAULIC FLUID COOLING. ON
HOT DAYS OR WHEN FUEL TEMPERATURE IS KNOWN TO BE
ABOVE 90°F., MONITOR THE SYSTEM B OVERHEAT INDICATOR
ON THE THIRD CREWMAN'S PANEL AND SWITCH PUMPS OFF
WHEN OVERHEAT IS INDICATED.
INTERMITTENT SYSTEM B PUMP OPERATION IS LIMITED TO
FIVE STARTS OF ANY ONE PUMP IN A 5-MINUTE PERIOD.
FOLLOWING THE FIFTH START RUN PUMP FOR AT LEAST 5
MINUTES OR TURN PUMP OFF FOR A MINIMUM OF 30
MINUTES.

B. The following procedure covers pressurization of hydraulic


systems A and B through operation of electrical-driven
hydraulic system B pumps only. Refer to 29-11-0 , Hydraulic
System A - Maintenance Practices and 29-12-0, Hydraulic System
B - Maintenance Practices for other approved methods of
Pressurizing Hydraulic Systems A and B.

A. Depressurize spoiler hydraulic systems A and B.

(1) Provide electrical power.


(2) Position hydraulic power spoiler system A and B switches
on P5 panel to OFF.
(3) Open flight control spoiler shutoff valve circuit breaker
on P6 panel.
(4) Position hydraulic pump switches A and B on P4 panel to
OFF.
(5) Position ground interconnect valve switch on P4 panel to
CLOSE.
(6) If any hydraulic system components are to be removed
depressurize hydraulic system reservoirs (Ref 29-11-0,
Maintenance Practices ).
(7) Rotate control wheel until spoilers cease to function
hydraulically
B. Restore Airplane to Normal
NOTE : Perform following steps after completing spoiler control
system maintenance that required depressurization.

(1) Position spoiler systems A and B hydraulic power switches


on P5 panel to ON.
(2) Close flight control spoiler shutoff valve circuit
breaker on P6 panel.
(3) Pressurize hydraulic reservoirs as required (Ref
29-11-0 ).
(4) Remove electrical power if no longer required.
4. Spoiler Hydraulic Systems A and B Pressurization
A. Pressurize spoiler hydraulic system A and B.
(1) Install nose landing gear ground lockpin (Ref 32-00-11 ).
(2) Provide electrical power.
(3) Position one switch on P4 panel (ELEC PUMP 1 or ELEC PUMP
2) for hydraulic system B to ON.

(4) Position ground interconnect switch on P4 panel to OPEN.


(5) Energize spoiler hydraulic system by placing hydraulic
power spoiler system A or system B switches on P5 panel
to ON.
NOTE : To energize only one aileron hydraulic system
select by position of these switches.

B. Restore airplane to normal.


NOTE : Perform following steps after completing spoiler control
system maintenance that required pressurization.

(1) Position switches on P4 panel (ELEC PUMP 1 and ELEC PUMP


2) for hydraulic system B to OFF.
(2) Position ground interconnect valve switch on P4 panel to
CLOSE.
(3) Position spoiler systems A and B hydraulic power switches
on P5 panel to ON.
(4) Remove electrical power if no longer required.
(5) Remove nose landing gear ground lockpin (Ref 32-00-11 ).
