Research Paper Outline

Thesis: Bullying is a potentially damaging problem to the academic culture because kids develop a
fear of speaking up, their grade-point average drops and they develop low self-esteem, which then
affects them mentally, physically and their academic future.

Major sections:
I. Topic sentence for section/ pp 1: All across the U.S, bullying is a problem that has
affected kids of all ages in any environment and its culture.
a. Evidence for section/ pp 1: 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 U.S. students say they have been bullied in
school. 1

b. Evidence for section/ pp 1: Most bullying happens in middle school, and it’s usually verbal
and social bullying.2
c. Evidence for section/ pp 1: Young people who are perceived as different from their peers
are often at risk for being bullied.3

II. Topic sentence for section / pp 2: Bullying has caused the academic environment and
culture to become compromised, as bullying affects not only the victim, but everyone around them
as well.
a. Evidence for section/ pp 2: Bystanders might feel fearful or powerless to ct and guilty for
not acting.4
b. Evidence for section/ pp 2: Bullies might feel disconnected from school and dislike
school. 5

c. Evidence for section/ pp 2: Victims of bullying display high levels of emotion that
indicate vulnerability and low levels of resilience.6

III. Topic sentence for section / pp 3: Bullying impacts the culture and environment of a
school, making it damaging for those around and in the environment.
a. Evidence for section/ pp : The students feel like the school has an environment of fear
and respect.7
b. Evidence for section/ pp : Students start perceiving that teachers and staff have little
control and don;t care about them.8
c. Evidence for section/ pp : Students start to experience difficulty learning and start to feel
insecure.9

IV. Topic sentence for counter argument/ pp 4: Bullying is not damaging to students, and
makes them a tougher person, willing to fight back.
a. Evidence for section/ pp : Children who returned hostility appeared to be the most
mature. 10

b. Evidence for section/ pp: Teachers should not protect pupils from playground spats as
they can help handle help difficult event in the future.11
c. Evidence for section/ pp : A study has shown that youngsters are more popular and more
admired by teachers and friends if they return schoolyard hostility in any kind.12

V. Conclusion Final thoughts about this subject/ summary of ideas


In conclusion, bullying tends to affect students and their environment, damaging the culture
around them. Not only does this cause problems for the victim, but even the bully, and the
bystanders are affected as well. Their mental stability tends to decline as they feel insecure /
scared of being at school, scared of talking out loud and guilty of their actions. This is
damaging for all kids, and shows that schools should be taking action to put several rules and
punishments into place to stop this growing problem.
