UNIT I

Historical Evaluation of Aircrafts and Industries


Evolution and History of flight, types of aviation Industry, key players in aviation Industry, global and Indian Aircraft
scenario.
Introduction to Aircrafts:
Three view diagram of a conventional airplane, basic components of an Aircraft and their functions, Aircraft Axis system,
Primary and Secondary controls. Types of Aircrafts - Lighter than Air/ Heavier than Air aircrafts. Classification of
airplanes based on function, based on configuration, based on power plants, based on landing gear arrangements,
advantages and disadvantages of various configurations.
UNIT II
Introduction to Aircraft Instruments and Systems
Basic instruments of an airplane, Basic Pneumatic and hydraulic systems, Fuel systems, Engine Control systems, Landing
gear systems, Power assisted and power operated systems, Autopilot systems.

UNIT III
Properties of Earth atmosphere and basic aerodynamics
Physical properties and structure of the atmosphere, temperature, pressure and altitude relationships, Evolution of lift,
drag and moment. Different types of drag., Forces on the airplane, Bernoulli's Equation, Airflow over wing section,
Pressure Distribution over a wing section, Generation of Lift, Drag, Pitching Moments, speed of sound, Mach number,
Reynolds' number, Boundary layer, Types of Drag, Lift Vs Drag Curve, Aerofoil Nomenclature, Types of Aerofoil, Various
Wing Platform, lift distribution on wing plan forms - Centre of Pressure, Aerodynamic Center, Aspect Ratio, Taper ratio,
Wing loading, load factor, thrust loading and power loading.
UNIT IV
Basic Aircraft Structures and aircraft materials
Classification of aircraft loads, typical wing and fuselage structure, function of each component, various fuselage
construction, Landing gear components and functions, Types of empennage.
Aircraft Materials, Metallic and non-metallic materials, Use of aluminium alloy, titanium, stainless steel and composite
materials.
UNIT V
Basics of engines and fuels
Classification of power plants, Basic engine components, Advantages and disadvantages various engines. Use of
propeller and jets for thrust production. Classification of rocket engines. Aircraft fuels and rocket propellants.
