Manipulation in bullying

“Fighting means you could lose. Bullying means you can't. A bully wants to beat somebody; he

doesn't want to fight somebody.” Andrew Vachss. One out of every four students (22%) report

being bullied during the school year (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2015).

bullying is a big word many people got bullied in their life in fact every year 13 million kids die
as a result of bullying. There are many types of bullying such as cyber bullying and physical
bullying, bullying involves many types of manipulation such as: coercion, isolation and
demeaning.

Definition:

According to Cambridge dictionaries bullying is: “to hurt or frighten someone who is smaller or

less powerful than you, often forcing that person to do something they do not want to do”

this definition shows us that bullying is a form of coercion and demeaning by using physical

power and making people fear you.

In Shakespeare Othello we can it when Othello threats Cassio and Montano :”Alright, now I’m

starting to lose my cool. By God, if you don’t tell me what happened you’ll all suffer.” This

shows us that using coercion is one way to bully.

Cyberbullying is an another way of bullying, in our era of social networks like Facebook and

Twitter a new way of bullying came to the world this way uses demeaning as a way to

manipulate the victims.

Hannah Smith from england was 14 years old when she started using a website named Ask.fm to

ask quastions about her skin, before she died she was a victim of cyberbullying. People insulted

her after a few weeks of being bullied she committed suicide, her sister found her body and her

father found a note she wrote just before her death “As I sit here day by day I wonder if it’s

going to get better. I want to die, I want to be free. I can’t live like this any more. I’m not happy”.

Bullying is one of the biggest problems tennagers face today, that doesn’t mean we can not avoid

it. But for us to understand how to avoid bullying we need to know what “type” of people

usually get bullied according to Parentingideas.com “There is no profile of a typical child who is

bullied, however, the children with the following characteristics tend to be bullied more than

others: Children who look different – small children, overweight kids or early maturing girls are

often targeted by bullies. Children with poor body language such as slumped shoulders or those

who avoid eye contact. Children who have different interests, or who excel in an area that has

low social status. Those with poor social skills, who wear their hearts on their sleeves or have

few friends. Passive, non-assertive children. A mixture of the above characteristics.”

Therefore if we want to avoid bullying we need to try not to be one of these people.
