EDU 201 LESSON PLAN

Student:​Angelica Viggiano Grade Level:​ ​Fifth Grade


Subject Area:​ Gender Differences and Education

Standards: ​Grade 5 benchmarks: H3.5.1 Compare and/or contrast the daily lives of children
throughout the United States, both past and present. H3.5.2 Recognize that communities include
people who have diverse ethnic origins, customs, and traditions, and who make contributions to
the United States.

Objectives: ​The students should learn how to recognize gender biases, sex role stereotyping, sex
role socialization, and be able recognize their own possible gender biases. They should also
know what the Women's Educational Equity Act is, and how to create a gender fair classroom.

Materials/ Equipment: ​Google slides powerpoint, white board/ dry erase markers, crossword
puzzle handout.

Procedures: T- Introduces topic and asks questions about typical “boy stuff” and “girl stuff.”
S- Answer questions about typical “boy stuff” and “girl stuff.”
T- Begins powerpoint presentation about sex roles and gender biases.
T- Asks if the students believe there are gender biases in today’s schools.
S- Answer one at a time about their beliefs.
T- Continues and finishes powerpoint
T- Hands out the crossword puzzle
S- Complete crossword puzzle with teacher assistance.

Closure: ​ Discuss and complete crossword puzzle with the class to ensure they understand the
material. Lastly, students will take out their #5 reflective journal for a classroom discussion of
the topic.

Assessment: 1. What is sex role socialization?


2. What is sex role stereotyping?
3. What is gender bias?
4. What does WEEA stand for and mean?
5. How can you create a gender fair classroom?
