While Emerson spends considerable time determining how to make learning interesting for his students, Emerson isn’t always as prepared as it could and should be. He is encouraged to carefully plan

Following each of the lessons I observed, Emerson typically identified things that didn’t work well in the lessons. Together we discussed what he might have done differently. So, he reflected on his work,
but this reflection didn’t always result in significant change.

Emerson designs his lessons to be of high interest to his students. During the semester, students engaged in simulations, worked with numbers associated with the NCAA basketball playoffs, etc.

Emerson openly admitted occasional mistakes during lesson delivery. He also encouraged his students to thoughtfully share their ideas, even if that meant pointing out Emerson’s mistakes.

Emerson cares about his students and demonstrates this care in the way he speaks to them. He appropriately jokes with them, but he also spends time focusing on individuals who need
encouragement, offering assistance to help all students be successful. He is very complimentary when students demonstrate understanding, fully engage in the learning activities, help one another, etc.

Emerson is very aware of servant leadership and its impact on the community. Emerson works with an organization called Blessed with Success that focuses on positivity and helps with the community.
This past Thanksgiving, they blessed five struggling families with full Thanksgiving dinners. These types of topics are discussed at times with his students in his effort to help students understand the
importance of servant leadership and community involvement.

Emerson has been teaching for two years on a conditional teaching certificate. He truly wanted to be a teacher, so he has worked diligently to earn his Master’s degree and a Washington State Teaching
Certificate. However, on the day-to-day planning, he is not always as prepared as he should be. Dedication to the profession must include being well-planned and delivering effective lessons on a day-to-
day basis.

At Warden Elementary School, the adopted curriculum is the open-educational resources, Engage New York. This highly rated curriculum presents math concepts and skills in a
sequential and spiraling manner. However, the curriculum is dense and sometimes difficult for teachers to deliver. Emerson understands the math, but he has found the curriculum
a bit difficult to understand. He is encouraged to continue to focus on developing full understanding of the curricular activities and learning experiences.

Emerson uses strategies to promote physical activity when in his class. He incorporates movement during lesson activities and through classroom procedures. (e.g. Students earn

In a recent observation, it was noted that students seemed to be clear about Emerson’s expectations for working with a partner and asking you for help. I was impressed by how
well they worked together and helped each other.

Emerson regularly incorporates mini lessons to when teaching core lessons in an effort to fill in holes in students learning which he has identifies through formative and summative
assessments. These lessons are of high interest to his student and are relevant to what they are working on. Many of these lessons are directly related to current events occurring
in the community, nation, or world. Emerson makes connections with the lessons to what students are studying.
