sector such as a modern hydraulic laboratory, the
largest in-situ groundwater remediation installation, and
Europe's largest prototype wastewater treatment plant.
Additionally, Stuttgart and the surrounding area are
served by two of the largest long-distance water supply
systems in Europe, the Landeswasserversorgung
(LWV) and the Bodenseewasserversorgung (BWV),
which are in close cooperation with the WAREM
programme as well.

Educational organisation
Water Resources Engineering and Management
(WAREM) is a two-year Master of Science programme
beginning in the winter semester of each year. The
programme consists of three in-class semesters and a
semester designated for research and thesis work.
The students have to complete four mandatory
modules (21 credit points [ECTS]), two mandatory key
qualification subjects or language courses up to level
A2.1 CEFR (6 ECTS), five elective mandatory modules
(out of nine) (30 ECTS), and six elective modules (33
ECTS). Students must obtain at least 72 ECTS before
starting the Master's thesis (30 ECTS).

The modules consist of lectures, tutorials, and

seminars, combined with practical work and
excursions. Thus, students get a thorough overview
and can easily find their field of interest and choose a
specialisation.
For the double degree programmes with Chalmers
University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden and
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam,
Malaysia, a special study macro-plan has been
developed. Students joining these programmes are
required to study two semesters in Germany and two
semesters at Chalmers or MARA. This macro-plan
ensures a compatible study programme.

working. The study load is very high and it is not
always easy to find a part-time job. Non-EU citizens
are allowed by law to work for a maximum of 120 full
days (240 half days) per year. Students who are
employed by the university in one of the institutes or
departments ("studentische Hilfskräfte") are exempt
from this regulation, but other restrictions apply. You

equivalent to those of a university) with completed
courses in civil engineering, environmental
engineering, or the equivalent

About the city

The city of Stuttgart, with about 600,000 inhabitants, is
the state capital of Baden-Württemberg. Situated in the
valley of the River Neckar, between the hills of the
Swabian Alb and the Black Forest, it is often called "the
city between forests and vineyards". A large number of
cultural highlights can be found in the city, including the
State Opera, the famous ballet founded by John
Cranko, theatres, concert and musical halls, art
galleries, and various museums. The Stuttgart area is
one of Europe's strongest high-tech regions. The
region is specialised in industries such as car
manufacturing, environmental technologies, machine
tools, electronics, information, and communication
technology. Many internationally-renowned companies
such as Bosch, Daimler, Porsche, and IBM Germany
have their headquarters and factories in the greater
Stuttgart area. In addition, numerous smaller
companies producing machine tools, textiles, precision
instruments, and luxury items are located here.
