ALCOHOL TRANSPORT AND PROTECTIVE

CUSTODY
Alcohol poisoning occurs when the person has consumed so much alcohol in such a short period of time that the body is shutting
down. As alcohol is a depressant, major systems such as the respiratory system are slowed down and may stop. The poisoning
causes vital body systems to shut down. Determination of high risk drinking or an intoxicated state is based upon physical
observation and needn’t rely on any mechanical, electrical, or chemical instrument. Staff should evaluate for the following
symptoms, which may constitute a medical emergency:

Characteristics of a person with Alcohol Poisoning

1. Repeated episodes of vomiting

2. Unconscious or semiconscious and cannot be woken.
3. Cold, clammy, pale or bluish skin
4. Slow breathing
5. Person is vomiting while “sleep” or is passed out
6. Person cannot be woken after repeated attempts.
7. Inability to stand walk, or can only do so with difficulty
8. Person is poorly aware of surroundings or are slurring words
9. Reported to have consumed a large quantity of alcohol, or chugged alcohol in a short period, or
ingested other sedating or tranquilizing drugs

on call)

c. Is the Student conscious or unconscious
d. nature of incident,

3. Second Level Protocol (Responsibilities: Communication/notifications and decisions on interim

measures)

Information from first person on scene should travel up the chain to the following people:

a) Director of Athletics - if an incident occurs during the course of athletic event, in-between practices or team trips
b) Residence Life AD/Director on call – if an incident occurs in or surrounding a university controlled residential
area.
c) Dean of Students- if an incident occurs anywhere on campus (ie. library, classroom, outside quad)

(The group also discussed the possibility of creating a Deans and Directors on call rotation)

Parental Notification

1
The Dean or Director on Call (Student Life) will make a notification to the parent or emergency contact that is listed in
the students Polaris account. This notification will be made for both an unconscious or conscious student. The Dean
or Director on call will share with the emergency contact as much information as possible about the circumstances of
the incident and the condition of the student.

4. Document the situation in Maxient

First Responders have a responsibility as soon as it is practical to submit a report about the incident into
Maxient.

5. After care
Mandatory (Check in) Assessment with CHS (Is this something the group can enforce?)
