4. DEFINITIONS

For the purpose of this method statement, the following definitions shall apply:

4.1 Company : Ras Gas

4.2 Contractor : Chiyoda, Snamprogetti & Company Joint Venture
(CMS & A)

Direct Blowing Method.
5.1 Air Accumulation Method

To blow out the pipe by air, air is accumulated in a column/drum/vessel associated

with the pipe, then the pipe at the downstream is blown out by opening a valve. If
the accumulated method cannot be used it is possible to blow the line clean by
installing plastic sheets at the pipe ends and using them as a rupture disc. Care
should be taken using this method and pipes should be secured anchored
accordingly.
5.2 Direct Blowing Method
This method applies to pipe diameter upto 12”. The pipe to be air blown is
connected to the air supply source using a temporary pipe or hose. Dry utility air or
generated by temporary oil free compressor can be used as an air source.

6. PREPARATION

D 6.1 A system of a particular line service will be marked up on the P & ID highlighting the air
in let charging point and discharge point. Temporary spools connected with the
system shall be also indicated either for charging or discharging air. Furthermore
temporary blinds, spacers and valves in closed or open position will be highlighted.
6.2 Line or system will be then prepared as indicated or highlighted on marked P & ID.
6.3 The following shall be excluded but not limited from air blowing. (and as agreed at site)
6.3.1 Orifice Plates
6.3.2 In-line Strainers or Mixers
D
6.3.3 Rupture Discs
6.3.4 Pressure Relief Valves
6.3.5 Control Valves (where ingress of dirt could accumulate) except ball & gate
type
6.3.6 Spargers
6.3.7 Spray Nozzles
6.3.8 Flow Meters
6.3.9 Check Valve (see item 6.5)
6.4 Legends for P & ID Mark-up :
D
The following general legends and symbols shall be used to define the system to be
air blown. Other specialized symbols may be used and defined directly on P&ID.

= Item temporarily removed = Permanent Spacer

= Inlet Point C = Close Valves

= Discharge point (numbered in O = Open Valves

sequence if multiple points are
required)

= Temporary Blind = Hose connection

= Spool

6.5 Any void space caused by the removal of instruments or piping specialty items not
D included in the flushing works, shall be joined by adjusting the existing pipe
connection or by adding temporary spools, or by opening or adding by passes.

6.6 Check valves installed in the reverse flow from the inlet point shall be inverted and
D noted on the P&ID proper re-instatement works.
6.7 Joints where no requirements to break-up flanges shall be installed with permanent
gaskets. Flanges where re-installment requires break-up shall use temporary
D gasket.
6.8 Ensure that flange connections are tight and instrument connections are properly
blinded or plugged depending on the actual connection.
6.9 Temporary discharge spools vented to atmosphere shall be installed in a safe
D location.
6.10 Where location has space constraints, and piping configuration requires dismantling
portion of the system, temporary charge or inlet spool shall be installed.
6.11 It is important that no segment or part of piping system shall be left out during the
exercise.
6.12 Impulse lines of instruments, pressure gauge, etc shall be isolated.
6.13 Globe valve shall be removed before air blowing.

D 6.14 Valves removed from the line shall be covered with plastic sheets for internal
protection.

D 7. AIR BLOWING PROCEDURE

7.1 A clean and oil free air supply shall be derived from either existing plant or Tr-3
instrument air.
7.2 When using plastics sheets as temporary rupture discs, care should be taken with
regards to the quantity and quality of polyethylene sheets.
- Always, use 1 sheet of 500 # gauge for the first blow, check the pressure on
the line just prior to the release of air.
7.3 Whenever air supply is derived from the new compressed air plant facilities, vent valve
and subsequent top openings shall be closed in order to avoid any drop in pressure.
7.4 The quality of air at the discharge point where debris are rejected out shall be
monitored to check if the cleanliness is already within acceptable condition.
D
7.5 Line cleanliness will be monitored while blowing is on going.
7.6 When no indication of any debris, direct or other foreign matter and a minimum of two
(2) blows depending on the quality of air, until such, then line flushing (cleaning) will
be accepted and documentation will be signed for acceptance at site. Final
acceptance of air blowing shall be determined by Contractor & Company.

8. REINSTATEMENT & LAY UP

D
8.1 System shall be totally depressurized .
8.2 Once complete, all temporary spools and instruments dismantled shall be reinstated
D with final gaskets.
8.3 Open ends where no blinds installed shall be properly covered with plastic until all
lines are put in the correct piping configuration.
8.4 On completion system shall be air leak tested to approximate 7 Barg then laid up to
D protect cleaned surfaces as specified.

9. SAFETY

9.1 All work permits shall be prepared completed and received by Authorised Personnel
only.
9.2 All location of air blowing should be cordoned to prevent others not concerned from
approaching work area.
9.3 Temporary safety signs shall be provided at blowing points.
9.4 Work shall be co-ordinated at all times and confirmed with contractor.
9.5 The contractor will maintain good housekeeping standards at all times.
9.6 Prior to blowing, safety supervisor will ensure all works had been stopped within the
area.
9.7 Temporary discharge fittings or suitable screens shall be erected to prevent damage
D to equipment and injury to personnel from line debris ejected at high velocity during
flushing.
