DYNAMIC PHYSICAL EDUCATION SECONDARY LESSON PLAN

Lesson Plan 1

OBJECTIVES:
The student will:
1. Perform locomotor movements and practice skills taught in previous classes while making their way through the
Amazing PE Race.
2. They will also utilize their map reading skills learned in class to navigate their way through the locomotor task
sheet depicted on the school grounds.

EQUIPMENT: 15 numbered cones, 15 clothespins, 15 clipboards with writing utensil attatched by string, map
of school grounds, 15 direction sheets, pedometers (1 per student), 15 clue sheets, 15 locomotor sheets, and task
cards with clue on the back. Also equipment that is needed for what the teacher decides each station task is in
order to receive the clue on the back.

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY (2  3 MINUTES)
Students are first introduced to the activity by asking if they have seen the Amazing Race on TV. Some
will have heard of it others maybe not, the teacher will then explain to students that as part of the
Amazing Race they must travel from “port to port” collecting clues and that they will have their own
Amazing PE Race today. Students are partnered up, eazch has their own pedometers and they each pair
will share a clipboard. Taped to the back of their clipboard is a map of the school grounds, the map
consists of 15 triangles with numbers listed inside representing the ports they have to travel to and collect
each clue from. Each pair receives a locomotor sheet and a clue sheet.

FITNESS DEVELOPMENT (8  12 MINUTES)
The teacher will have arranged the circuit training area to include the locomotor skills needed for the
lesson focus.
Their will be 15 cones with locomotor skills pinned to them. The cones will be placed around the black
top rectangle. The students will already be in their paired up team from the introductory activity andf they
will perform the following activities at each station:
1. skipping             6. Sidesliding           11. roll
2. walking              7. Leaping                 12. Army crawl
3. galloping            8. Running                13. Tiptoe
4. high jumps          9. Marching              14. High Knees
5. hopping              10. Crab walk            15. Distnace Jumps

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
LESSON FOCUS (15  20 MINUTES)
The locomotor sheet tells the student which numbered cone they must locate first, second, third, etc. Each
locomotor sheet is different so that when the students move to their first cone, every pair is going some
place different. This helps prevent back up. The locomotor sheet also tells the pair how they must travel
to get to their designated cone, for example, one sheet might say, “skip to #5 to find your clue”. When
they find cone #5 on their map, they must skip there. When they arrive at cone #5, the students must
perform the task that is clothespinned to the cone, for example, 15 push ups. When they have completed
the task, the students write down the clue letter that is in Red Marker on the back of the task card, onto
their clue sheet. After writing down the clue, students will check to see which port they visit next and
which locomotor skill to use. They continue in this fashion until they have visited each of the 15 ports.
After collecting all of their clues, the students must report back to their home port and unscramble their
clues to find a PE phrase.

GAME (5 MINUTES)
Once all students have safely made it back to their home port the teacher will ask the class if anyone has
successfully came up with the PE phrase that was spelled out from the clues. If no one has been able to
unscramble the phrase then give them clues as to how many words make up the phrase, what is the first
letter of each word. Once a pair of students have successfully unscrambled the phrase which spelled out
“Fitness Can Be Fun” (which is 15 letters, from each of the 15 task zones). Next the teacher will ask the
students to write down how many steps their pedometers kept track of during the Lesson Focus and have
them log their numbers of a class sheet to get a total number of steps to compare to the other 4 th garde
classes that have completed this activity.

EVALUATION/REVIEW
Discuss what muscles were used to get from one port to the next. Discuss why the pedometers are a great
resource for this activity if we wanted to make it a true Amazing PE Race between not only their
classmates but also their neighboring 4th garde classes.

CHEER
At the end of the lesson the class would chant “Fitness Can Be Fun”, the PE phrase they deciphered from
their clues!
