Climate Change

“Climate change is a global problem with critical environmental, social,

distributive, and political dimensions, which poses one of the current leading challenges for

humanity.” (pope Francis). People should do more about climate change, and it is not

enough to complain that our planet is becoming more polluted. I believe that civilians could

do more for the earth on their own than organizations with movements to combat climate

change. People should be concerned about the environment every day not just Earth Day.

The issue of climate change is a critical problem; which people have ignored for a long

time. Climate change has increased, above all, due to human activities throughout history.

Such as greenhouse gas emissions produced by motorized vehicles and industries. We

could help our planet a lot if we just stopped using cars a little less, and use a bicycles or

walk to those places that are close to us. We could also re-use our trash to avoid polluting.

There are many ways in which we can help conserve the environment and fight

climate change. Thirty percent of Southerners stated that they do not recycle anything while

86 percent of people on the East Coast and 88 percent of people on the West Coast do

recycle. Sixty-seven percent of Americans recycle aluminum cans, 59 percent recycle

paper, 57 percent recycle plastic and just over half recycle glass. (“What Percent of People

Recycle?”). One way to get it is to use a bicycle instead of using cars to go to work and go

to school. Since people start driving since age 18, it is estimated that about 75% of people

in the US drive cars. According to the US Census, in 2006 24.6% of the US population was

under 18. Since most of these people do not drive, the percent of people who make should

be lower than 75%. Assuming 17% of people under 18 drive. The percentage of people

who drive a car in the US is 61%. Motorized vehicles produce an immense amount of

pollutants. Seventy-five percent of carbon monoxide emissions come from automobiles. In

urban areas, harmful automotive emissions are responsible for anywhere between 50 and 90

percent of air pollution. That being said of air pollution coming from our vehicles. (Cama,

Timothy).

Many of the scientific studies that have been published in recent years indicate the

existence of climate change on Earth, and relate this process to human activities such as the

emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (among which carbon dioxide). Based on

the scientific consensus, in some of the industrialized countries, a part of the population

continues to deny the existence of climate change and the involvement of human beings in

this process. The proportion of people who believe in climate change has been steady since

April 2013. But the proportion of those who say they "do not know" whether climate

change is missing dropped six percentage points between April and November 2013,

suggesting that many who " do not know "moved into the" not happening "category.

(“More Americans Don't Believe Global Warming Is Happening: Survey.”)

The planet Earth is the place where we live that delights us with its majestic

landscapes, but what is happening with them? the evidence is obvious; we observe how the

flora and fauna that help complement the different ecosystems are being destroyed by the

industrial civilization that causes irreparable damage. That occurs before our eyes. Despite

this, we insist on ignoring this evidence. It is possible that this could lead human beings to

the brink of extinction. We are facing an inevitable crisis.

Although the people of this country do not want to see the harsh reality, there are

people in the government who work to take measures to combat the phenomenon. The

office of Senator Barbara A. Boxer, D-Calif, issued her third National Climate Assessment

Report in 2014, which was presented to Congress. In the report which she emphasizes that

the climate change in the US is present in our surroundings and that we are beginning to

feel the impacts. It also clarifies that we must act in an integrated manner to reduce

pollution for the sake of public health our nation's economy to ensure the well-being of

future generations (Senator Boxer).

According to Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations “we are the

first generation to be able to end poverty, and the last generation that can take steps to avoid

the worst impacts of climate change. Future generations will judge us harshly if we fail to

uphold our moral and historical responsibilities.”

Although there are people who ignore the circumstances of climate change, there

will always be those who try to combat this phenomenon. Either individually or with the

support of the community. Now more than ever we must take responsibility for taking care

of our environment, because what we do today, it could affect us tomorrow—and the

consequences could be catastrophic. Together we can protect our planet and preserve all its

natural beauty, and ensure a better future for the next generations. So they can inherit a

beautiful, clean and full of life planet. And not an empty and lifeless world.
