Dear Nurse Manager,

As a new graduate Registered Nurse, I am extremely interested in pursuing a position in the

Cardiac Surgery and Heart Transplant Intensive Care Unit (MB5BG/6E) at the Mayo Clinic in
Rochester, Minnesota.

This past fall, I spent three 12-hour shifts on the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Banner
University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. It was in this unit that I discovered my passion for
pursuing a career in intensive care with a cardiac focus. From taking care of patients
immediately after a coronary artery bypass graft to interacting with a patient with a total
artificial heart to witnessing the start of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation on a patient, I
learned so much in such a short amount of time, but there is so much more I want to learn. My
interest in critical care was further enforced after my 180-hour preceptorship on a Medical-
Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Northwest Medical Center, where I continued to expand my skills
repertoire. Through these experiences, I realized that I am drawn to and fascinated with the
care of cardiac patients. I would embrace the opportunity to expand my skills to the highest
level through the Mayo Clinic Nurse Residency Program to be able to contribute significantly to
this Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

I am motivated to pursue this position as I know that I can learn and grow as a new graduate
nurse in this dynamic environment that combines not only hands-on clinical orientation and
individualized training but also includes a nurse residency program. I would appreciate the
extensive learning opportunity this program provides through specialized learning sessions, the
experiences of my peers, and exposure to all ages and populations. As a new graduate
Registered Nurse, I am accountable, flexible, and dependable. Also, I have developed
communication skills that allow me to be an active contributor to the team, and hopefully to
pursue leadership positions within my unit or even throughout the hospital in the future.

Thank you for your time and consideration of my application for the position of Registered
Nurse on the Cardiac Surgery and Heart Transplant Intensive Care Unit. I look forward to
speaking with you regarding the next steps in my application. Please let me know if you have
any questions.

Sincerely,
