For my pathfinder I chose the topic of caring for senior dogs and designed it for the Stow-
Munroe Falls Public Library in Stow, Ohio (smfpl.org). This pathfinder is intended for use by adults and
teens and would be found with the databases/resources on the library website. Although there is not a
database topic on databases and online resources page which this topic fits (a database topic of pet care
should be created for this topic), it is still an important topic for the community as owning a dog is very
common in the United States. The pathfinder is designed as a webpage, with a brief introduction and
the resources separated into tables based on resource type. Because patrons may not be familiar with
the resources or know where they want to start, I put the resources in alphabetical order, within the
tables as well, to make searching easier. Although the majority of the resources are appropriate for the
general adult or teen, I did include databases for those interested in research. The resources I chose
were published in the 2000’s up to the present, and the majority was written by or has contributions
from licensed veterinarians or professors of veterinarian sciences. I broadened the topic slightly by
including some general information and preventative care resources, as people may have an aging dog
or an adopted dog and need a greater variety of information. I tried to avoid websites that appeared to
be promoting or selling products, or have sponsorship which may lead to biased information.
I would see patrons mostly using this pathfinder for personal use with their own pets. It is meant
to be used as an online resource which can give reputable and reliable information without having to
make a trip to the vet, or to help them prepare (questions) for their next vet visit. The library website
has a space for databases and online resources where this would be located, making it easy to find, and I
designed the structure of the pathfinder with the patron in mind. I kept the color scheme the same as
the library site, blue and white, and chose a large easy to read text. I included annotations as I do not
expect the patron to be familiar with the resources, and each resource has an active link.
