Dear

I am writing this supporting material for abandofbrothers, an organisation that seeks to

transform the lives of young men within a mentoring and personal development
framework. The model used by the charity is distinct from other mentoring models in that
they are able to profoundly address complex issues at level of the individual. The
outcome of this is that the source of a variety of social problems are dissolved; in my
view the work they are doing is the vital and missing piece of the jigsaw in respect of the
welfare to work sector.

My intention is to present abandofbrothers for consideration for funding within Careers

Development Group, Charitable Purposes Committee remit. I have attached an
additional document that has been created in partnership with abandofbrothers, with
additional sections written by myself on their behalf. This document gives an outline of
the charities work. As you will see from the additional document abandofbrothers is
closely aligned to the intentions identified by WISE within the context of their project
selection criteria.

“As a not-for-profit organisation, WISE aims to be of benefit to the community by helping more
and more people find meaningful and rewarding work. Sometimes that means working with the
most disadvantaged and under-privileged members of our society, those whom other
organisations may dismiss as being in the "too hard basket". We're not just here for the
community of the fortunate. Our aim is to help those, who without strong and compassionate
intervention, may not find the work they need and want.”

abandofbrothers fulfils the WISE Project Selection Criteria in the following ways:

High Value to the Community

abandofbrothers focuses its work in targeted communities and creates strong ties with
young men and families. The organisation seeks to transform communities from the
inside out, ensuring sustainability and community empowerment. The recent pilot project
and future projects will focus within a single community at any one time, creating a
strong network of mentors from within those communities. This means that
transformation within communities becomes a sustainable reality effecting positive
outcomes that will grow exponentially with time.

“For the past ten years I have worked in disadvantaged communities with young people
considered to be most at risk of becoming NEET and/or involved in crime and anti-social
behaviour. To my mind, the programmes run by abandofbrothers offer the most
meaningful and significant contribution to a reduction of the associated risk factors of
any that I have encountered.”

Provide Service Leadership & Innovation / University Research Partnership

Brighton University have agreed to undertake a longitudinal evaluation of the
abandofbrothers programme. This is being headed up by Chris Wilton (Senior Lecturer
in Eco Psychology); they hope to have a published report by August 2011 - with a
preliminary report as early as next summer. There is also the possibility - subject to a
funding bid being successful - of abandofbrothers running a Quest programme for young
men at Brighton University who are considered to be at risk of dropping out of University.

Two of the Directors for abandofbrothers are Directors of Olivier Mythodrama. Richard
Olivier and Michael Boyle are both Leadership Trainers and Keynote Speakers of the
highest calibre, delivering leadership training internationally to organisations such as;

• The United Nations

• National and Local Government (Including DWP)
• BUPA
• HSBC
• International Atomic Energy Agency
• Kings Fund
• National Health Service
• Red Cross

The principles embedded in the work of abandofbrothers are entirely rooted in the
principles of personal leadership. The male mentors (at least the 21 I had the honour of
meeting), all demonstrated a high degree of personal leadership, integrity and depth
which go some way to explaining the powerful impact they are having on the lives of the
young men with whom they engage.

abandofbrothers other core remit is to develop and deliver leadership training for
professionals working with young men and is looking into accreditation and certification
around mentoring for these professionals.

Government Funding
The charity has received some local council funding from Brighton & Hove City Council
but is not core funded by government at a National level. The organisation are due to
present to the House of Commons in October and they are seeking to secure funding to
enable them to grow in the future, they are currently drawing out their long term strategy,
which includes the creation of an Academy.

Long-Term Sustainability through Partnership, Joint Venture, Government

Funding or Project Generated Funds
The are holding a presentation at the House of Commons in October MPs and
prospective funders to showcase the work and make a case for core funding. This will
enable them to roll out the programmes on a much larger scale; their strategy is to build
a model in Brighton which will be sustainable and transferable at a National level.

Olivier Mythodrama, have donated two staff and some office space to abandofbrothers
for one year. Richard Olivier who is the CEO of Olivier Mythodrama is also a Director of
abandofbrothers.

Brighton & Hove Council are supporting abandofbrothers in a number of different ways
(e.g. funding through Targeted Youth Support Service).

There are a growing number of individuals from all sectors operating to support the work
of abandofbrothers on a voluntary basis, the effects of which can be seen by the
exponential growth of the charity at a strategic and developmental level. In addition, and
not insignificant, is the participation of a significant number of people offering work
focused opportunities such as apprenticeships, in work training and so forth. There
continues to grow a large body of mentors who themselves have undergone a rigorous
training process.

Congruent with Economic & Social Trends

The work of abandofbrothers addresses the issues at the core of many of our social
problems which absorb and enormous amount of public resources. The financial
cumulative cost of these problems throughout a single life has been estimated to be over
one hundred and fifty thousand pounds, this figure speaks for itself. Those identified as
being NEET continue to be a focus and a concern in light of the consequences of
associated risk factors; I have included a section on this in the additional document.

One of the powerful components of abandofbrothers is that the young men are securing
apprenticeships from within the broad network of mentors. The young men who
participated in the pilot are entering training and showing up for work - even if it that work
is in some cases currently unpaid - they are experiencing for the first time a sense of
purposefulness and positive direction. These young men are also being trained by and
working alongside older men who understand how to access and empower them through
the development of soft and hard skills.

Related to those Communities where WISE (CDG) Currently Provides Services

The pilot project of abandofbrothers took place in Whitehawk, East Brighton. The longer
term intention is to create a model that is rolled out to other areas with a history of
imbedded social challenges.

Opportunities for CDG

Director, Michael Boyle has expressed to me that if CDG were to support the
organisation through it’s Charitable Purposes Fund, he would be willing, through Olivier
Mythodrama, to offer a one day training workshop or seminar to the top level of our
leadership. This could be aimed at Leadership, Management or Front-Line staff and - in
any scenario - would be an extraordinary opportunity. As you will see from the links and
testimonials below this is no insignificant offer; it would be a personal achievement of
mine if those with whom I work at all levels were to benefit from such an inspirational
offering.

Michael is also willing to talk with CDG about setting up something for some of the
young adult males with whom we work (including something separate for women). In
respect of my client group, I know that there is a need for such work and am certain that
there is willingness and a need amongst my clients to take on such training.

Michael is keen to meet with Roy and or Richard (or appropriate designated person) to
discuss how mutual interests might best be served.

Below are some of quotes about the work delivered by Oliveir Mythodrama in addition to
some video links;

"Wow! - teaching an old dog new tricks in a memorable fashion"

Risk Management Advisor, Department of Work & Pensions
“If someone suggests you attend Mythodrama, clear your diary and don’t walk, run. Pure,
unalloyed learning and personal development of the highest order.”
Chairman, Primary Care Trust

“The finest and potentially highest yielding investment in our leadership development
history to date”
CEO, Fujitsu

“It was the single most impressive, motivational, emotional and stimulating experience I
have had in nearly 25 years of corporate life.”
CEO, CMPI

“It was brilliant! I am sitting here reading the evaluations with a very large grin, ear to ear! Today had a
big impact, people are already asking for more!” Chief, Learning Section Division, The United Nations

Lastly, I received a call from Michael Boyle last night expressing his wish for my
continued support in addressing some PR aspects related to the House of Commons
presentation on the 3rd of March and enquiring if I might assist in developing a guest list
for the event with a view to including those who may wish to be invited. Due to the fact
that I both understand the Welfare to Work Sector and the developmental needs of those
we serve I fully intend to participate at this level on a voluntary basis and contribute to
their work in whatever way I am able. I would be honoured if I could offer this support
within the context of my employment within CDG.

My interest in abandofbrothers stems not only from having worked and trained for over
12 years in the arena of personal development but also due to my extensive experience
of working with the hardest to reach through inclusion projects over many years, I am
passion about improving the lives of those I serve.

I sincerely hope that the information provided will go some way to beginning a dialogue
between CDG and abandofbrothers and as a result demonstrates our commitment to
innovation and sustainable social change.

I look forward to hearing from you and am happy to answer any questions you may
have.

Kind Regards – Helen Caton
