LITS 1002: Intro to Prose Fiction

Group Presentation Guidelines
Group Presentations Dates – April 12, 17, 19

In groups you are required to create a presentation that will critically engage the class using the
semester’s readings, films, and other media. Your group will be responsible for one 20-minute
presentation. You may be creative, and, in fact, you are encouraged to be creative. Still, your
presentation should critically engage the selected theme and should consider the larger
theme/title of the course “Introduction to Prose Fiction—What is Tradition?” That said, what
exactly are the “traditions” that we have encountered? What influences our understanding of
prose fiction?

With assessment values indicated after each bullet point below, in whatever order you choose to
organize your presentation, your presentation MUST do the following:

I. (20pts) Briefly identify how the theme is explored in THREE of the fictional texts
we examined in the course. You may feel free to contrast groups of texts that have
one view of the theme against a group of texts that have another perspective on the
theme.
II. (25pts) Using your own experience and knowledge (research [2 referenced sources
beyond the article] AND anecdotal), consider how the theme is understood
throughout the region or the world. For example: Is the treatment of the theme
monolithic throughout the region/ world? Is the theme treated differently based on
linguistic/colonial bloc, religious grouping, race, color, gender, class, age, education,
access? Or is it divided in some other way? Have researched and anecdotal evidence
for your answer.
III. (25pts) Summarize and analyze the assigned article through the lens of your theme.
Select a few lines that capture the article’s argument and select a few lines that give
clear evidence of that argument.
IV. (20pts) Relate the assigned article to THREE texts explored in the course AND to the
larger theme of “Intro to Prose Fiction- What is Tradition?”
V. (5pts) Answer the question: what role should tradition have?
VI. (5pts) Have one question to ask the class. Know the answer to the question you have
prepared.
VII. (5pts) Bonus points for creativity.
