Module 3-Session IV & V-April-August 2018

CAT 1: Public Health Engineering II (ECE 2313)-Open Book

Date: 26th April 2018 Due: 4th May 2018

1. (a) What are the objectives of sewage collection and disposal

(b) What are the possible adverse effects when untreated or partially treated
sewage is discharged to the environment?
(c) Define sewage, sullage, sewer, and sewerage.
(b) Discuss the wastewater collection and transport approaches you would
recommend for your county
2. (a) Define the meaning of physical characteristic of wastewater
(b) A well-mixed 25 mL of raw wastewater is used for Total Solids
analyses. A well-mixed 50 mL of raw wastewater is used for suspended
solids analyses. Weights (wt.) of evaporating dish with and without the
sample either dried, evaporated, or ignited were determined to constant
weight. The laboratory results are:
 Tare wt. of evaporating dish = 42.4723 g
 Wt. of dish plus residue after evaporation at 105°C = 42.4986 g
 Wt. of dish plus residue after ignition at 550°C = 42.4863 g
 Tare wt. of filter plus Gooch crucible = 21.5308 g
 Wt. of residue and filter plus crucible after drying at 105°C =
21.5447 g
 Wt. of residue and filter plus crucible after ignition at 550°C =
21.5349
Compute the concentrations of total solids, volatile solids, fixed solids, total
suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, and fixed suspended solids.
