Spring 2007 – Exam II
Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Name: _____________________________________

Student ID No.: _____________________________

Instructions:

Please check now and make sure your exam is complete. There should be 7 pages (including this
coversheet and 2 formula sheets), with 4 problems.

Read the problems carefully and plan your time so as to gain the maximum number of points.
The exam has 4 problems and is worth 100 points.

Please write neatly and clearly. Show all your work – simply listing answers is not sufficient.
You will be given partial credit for work that leads to a logical conclusion. Cross out any work
that you do not wish to be considered.

The exam is closed book, closed notes. There are important formulas provided on the last 2
pages of the exam. You may not use your own formula sheet.

Calculators are not allowed (nor are they required).

You may remove the staple and/or attach extra pages of work, but make sure that you staple all
the exam pages and extra work pages together before turning in the exam. Missing pages cannot
be accepted after the exam.

Problem 1. (20 points)

A hollow cylindrical rod is 60 in. long. It has an outer diameter of 3 in. and an inner diameter of
2.10 in. The polar moment of inertia and the shear modulus are given below.

L = 60 in. do = 3 in. di = 2.10 in.

J = 6 in4 G = 10 × 106 psi

If the maximum allowable shear stress is 6000 psi and the twist must not exceed 0.02 radians,
what is the maximum allowable torque, T, that can be applied?

Problem 2. (30 points)

A cylindrical rod is fixed between two walls. The rod is composed of

two materials. Section AC is made of one material (GAC = 2G) while −φ
section CD is made of a different material (GCD = G). A torque, T, is
applied at point B, as shown below. T T

JAC = JCD = J = 2 in.4 +φ

GAC = 2G = 20 × 106 psi GCD = G = 10 × 106 psi
T = 300 kip in. T T

Problem 3. (20 points)

A bending moment, M, is applied to the cantilevered beam, shown below. The dimensions of the
beam cross section are shown below. Point C is the centroid. The distances a, e, f, the location
of the centroid, y , and moments of inertia, Iy and Iz, are given below.

y = 4/3 = 1.33 in. f = 1.94 in. Iy = 13/2 = 6.5 in.4

a = 5/3 = 1.67 in. e = 2.40 in. Iz = 15/2 = 7.5 in.4
M = 100 kip in.

Determine the maximum compressive normal stress due to the bending moment. Note: You are
not required to complete the arithmetic to get a proper fraction or decimal number.

Problem 4. (30 points)

Two channels are welded together to form a box-beam. The beam is fixed to the wall at one end,
and the centroid of the beam is located at point C. An axial load, P, is applied at the location
shown (below and to the right of C). The properties of the beam and the location of the axial
load are given below:

A = 25 in.2 b = 6 in. a = 3 in.

Iy = 100 in.4 h = 8 in. e = 2 in.
Iz = 200 in.4 P = 200 kips

a) Determine the normal stress at point D (specify tension or compression).

b) If the load, P, is moved so that e = 0, determine the location of the neutral axis (specify above
or below the centroid, C).
