Sharon Lou Angel, born April 10, 1948,
died March 31, 2018, after battling ovarian
cancer for six years.
Sharon was born in San
Francisco and a graduate
of Lincoln High School.
She worked for Yellow
Cab. She became a mom
and worked part time for
Mervyn’s for 20 years.
After retiring, she took
great pride in taking care
of her beloved grandchildren. She lived by
her strong faith in God and had a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ. She attended

Sharon is survived by her loving husband
of 50 years, Stanley; devoted children
Martin Angel (Shirley), Wendy Conde (Ted)
and grandchildren Rebecca Angel, Hailey,

vived by her brother Paul Nitsch (Pearl) of
Rocklin.

SACRAMENTO — Investigators hunt-
ing down the so-called Golden State Killer
used information from genetic websites
last year that led to the wrong man, court
records obtained Friday by the Associated
Press showed.
An Oregon police officer working at the
request of California investigators per-
suaded a judge in March 2017 to order a
73-year-old man in a nursing home to pro-
vide a DNA sample. It’s not clear if offi-
cers collected the sample and ran further
tests.
The Oregon City man is in declining
health and was unable to answer questions
Friday about the case.
The case of mistaken identity was dis-
covered as authorities hailed a novel use of
DNA technology that led this week to the
arrest of former police officer Joseph
DeAngelo at his house outside Sacramento
on murder charges. Critics of the inves-
tigative approach, however, warned it
could jeopardize privacy rights.
DeAngelo’s suspected of being the
sadistic attacker who killed 13 people and
raped nearly 50 women during the 1970s
and ‘80s.
Handcuffed to a wheelchair in orange jail
scrubs, DeAngelo made his first court
appearance Friday. The 72-year-old looked
dazed and spoke in a faint voice to
acknowledge he was represented by a pub-
lic defender. He did not enter a plea.
He has been charged with eight counts of
murder, and additional charges are expect-
ed, authorities said.

innocent until he’s proven guilty and
that’s what I’m going to ask everyone to
remember, ” DeAngelo’s public defender
Diane Howard said outside court. “I feel
like he’s been tried in the press already.”
Investigators were able to make the
arrest this week after matching crime-
scene DNA with genetic material stored in
an online database by a distant relative.
They relied on a different website than
they had in the Oregon search, and they did
not seek a warrant for DeAngelo’s DNA.
Instead, they waited for him to discard
items and then swabbed the objects for
DNA, which proved a conclusive match to
evidence that had been preserved more
than 30 years.
Also Friday, the co-founder of the
genealogy website used by authorities to
help identify DeAngelo said he had no idea
its database was tapped in pursuit of the
suspect who eluded law enforcement for
four decades.
Authorities never approached Florida-
based GEDmatch about the investigation
that led to DeAngelo, and co-founder
Curtis Rogers said law enforcement’s use
of the site raised privacy concerns that
were echoed by civil liberties groups.
The free genealogy website, which
pools DNA profiles that people upload and
share publicly to find relatives, said it has
always informed users its database can be
used for other purposes. But Rogers said
the company does not “hand out data.”
“This was done without our knowledge,
and it’s been overwhelming,” he told the
Associated Press.

GEDmatch was one of the best tools, lead
investigator Paul Holes told the Mercury

Actors go ‘The Full Monty’
Pop-rock musical opens at the Hillbarn Theatre May 3

A new production of “The Full Monty”
musical about unemployed steel workers
turned male strippers opens at the Hillbarn
Theatre this week and stars two San Mateo
County natives.
San Mateo native Brad Satterwhite plays
Ethan Girard, one of the strip-dancing steel-
workers, while Foster City native Adrienne
Herro plays Vicki Nichols, the wife of
another one of the amateur male dancers.
“It’s a real fun role in a show where [there
are] a lot of men so it’s nice to be portraying
a woman to give a different point of view
and pepper in some womanly stuff through-
out the show,” Herro said.
The pop-rock musical was adapted from
the 1997 cult film of the same name, and it
has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards
since it premiered in 2000. The musical ver-
sion is set in Buffalo, New York, but other-
wise follows the original story about six
friends, aimless and in need of money after
being laid off from their steel mill jobs,
who create a strip tease act in which they
plan to show it all, hence “The Full Monty.”
“When people think about ‘The Full
Monty,’ most people think about the movie
and crude male humor, but there really is a
very touching story in it and the female
counterpart is very important throughout
the show,” Herro said.
Herro described her character as a gregari-
ous trophy wife while Satterwhite said his
role is that of a “lovable dumb guy who is a
lot of fun.”
“The role has lots of physical comedy,
which is challenging and exciting and
something I hadn’t done too much of,”
Satterwhite said. “The music is really good
and I didn’t appreciate it until I started
singing it. It’s trickier than it sounds, some
harmonies are complex and produce a unique
sound and it’s been great working on it.”
Satterwhite switches off between musicals
and plays and between comedies and dramas,
while Herro performs in the occasional
play, but specializes in musicals.
“I like singing and dancing my emotions
rather than speaking them,” she said.
Both have performed in previous Hillbarn
productions, and in numerous others at ven-
ues throughout the Peninsula and Bay Area.

LOS ANGELES — The free ride in Los
Angeles is over for solo drivers in zero-
emission cars.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the
Metropolitan Transportation Authority
voted Thursday to end a program allowing
such drivers in toll lanes on Interstate 10
and State Route 110.
They’ll have to pay tolls starting as soon

Herro said she fell in love with theater
under the tutelage of her Bowditch Middle
School drama teacher, Virginia Musante.
“She was the perfect person at the right
time and the reason I got into acting and she
made me love it enough to continue,” Herro
said. “She has touched the lives of so many
of my fellow actors and friends.”
Despite her early love for theater, Herro
took a 20-year hiatus from acting as the
demands of her career and parenting didn’t
leave much time for performing.
But several years ago, while taking a tap
dancing class, one of her classmates, who
happened to be the artistic director for a
Hillbarn production of “Holes” said Herro
would be perfect for the warden character in
the play. So the next day, Herro met with the
director and was offered the role. She’s been
performing regularly since.
Both performers have to balance their day
jobs with rehearsals and performances.
Satterwhite, who is the head of sales for a
startup company, said rehearsals can require
up to 15 hours a week.
“Theater is a way to relax,” he said. “My
day job is technical so theater is less work
than it is fun, especially once the show
starts.”

NORRISTOWN, Pa. — Bill Cosby’s
team blasted his sexual-assault trial as
a “public lynching” Friday and began
looking ahead to an appeal as the judge
ordered house arrest for the 80-year-old
comedian and said he would be outfitted
with a GPS ankle monitoring device.
Cosby’s appeal seems certain to
focus on the judge’s decision to let a
parade of women testify that they, too,
were abused by the former TV star.
Defense allegations of a biased juror
and the admission of Cosby’s explo-
sive testimony about drugs and sex are
among other possible avenues of
appeal as he tries to avoid a sentence
that could keep him in prison for the
rest of his days.
Cosby remains free on $1 million
bail while he awaits sentencing, prob-
ably within three months.
Judge Steven O’Neill said Cosby
would be confined to his suburban
Philadelphia home in the meantime.
The judge’s order, issued Friday after-
noon, said the comic may leave his
house to meet with his lawyers or to get
medical treatment, but must get permis-
sion first.

tled at a white woman in a Mississippi
grocery store in 1955. Constand is
white.
“He maintains his innocence, and he
is going to walk around as a man who’s
innocent because he didn’t do anything

Cosby maintained close ties with
Temple, serving as its public face and
often turning out to support its basket-
ball teams — an interest that connect-
ed him with Constand.
The defense is likely to focus its
appeal on the judge’s decision to allow
five additional accusers to testify. That
ruling was a victory for prosecutors
eager to move the case beyond a he-
said, she-said.
One of those women called Cosby a
“serial rapist.” Another choked back
tears as she asked, “You remember,
don’t you, Mr. Cosby?” A third
declared: “I was raped.”

Romaine calm
Restaurants calm customers, say lettuce safe

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Restaurants’ advice to their cus-
tomers? Romaine calm.
The government is still investigating how romaine let-
tuce from Yuma, Arizona, apparently became contaminated
with E. coli bacteria. As of this week, at least 84 people in
19 states have gotten sick, according to the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.
Growers in Yuma typically plant romaine lettuce between
September and January. During the peak of the harvest sea-
son, which runs from mid-November until the beginning of
April, the Yuma region supplies most of the romaine sold in
the U.S. The outbreak came as the harvest of romaine was
already near its end.
At many restaurants around the country, romaine is still
on the menu. Both family-run operations and big chains
say they’ve checked with suppliers and are confident their
romaine comes from places that aren’t affected by E. coli. If
they’re not sure, they’re replacing romaine with iceberg and
other lettuce varieties.
“We’ve got a lot of people asking where we get our lettuce
from,” said Armando Ayala, the manager of Cavatore, an
Italian restaurant in Houston. Cavatore offers three dinner
salads — including a Caesar made tableside — with lettuce
from California and local farms in Texas.
As it turns out, a lot of romaine comes from California,
which grows 74 percent of the nation’s lettuce, according to
the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even Salad and Go, a
chain with 12 restaurants in Arizona, gets its lettuce from
California.
Just Salad, which has 28 locations in New York, New
Jersey, Philadelphia and Chicago, says it saw a spike in
business this week after a social media blitz to assure cus-
tomers that its romaine comes from Salinas, California.
Supply chain manager Janani Lee said Just Salad already
carried five other types of lettuce, but it recently added ice-
berg for people who were still concerned.
Katie Calabrese and her friend, Amanda Larsen, both
threw out romaine at home, but it didn’t stop their salad
cravings. On Thursday, they were waiting in a long line at a
Sweetgreen restaurant in Philadelphia.
“I’m definitely making non-romaine choices, ” said
Calabrese.
“I eat kale,” Larsen said.

Central American asylum seekers get legal aid near U.S. border

TIJUANA, Mexico — About 20 volunteer
U.S. lawyers gave legal workshops Friday
just across the border in Mexico to Central
American asylum seekers who traveled in a
“caravan” that has been harshly criticized
by President Donald Trump.
Journalists were not allowed inside the
sessions for about 300 migrants that took
place at a civic group’s office, at Tijuana’s
largest migrant shelter and at an art gallery
in a building that once housed a cross-bor-
der tunnel used to smuggle drugs into San
Diego.
The lawyers gave information about the
U.S. asylum process while the children of
the mostly female migrants played. The
migrants were warned they could face long
periods of separation from their children
and lengthy detention if they are allowed to
stay in the U.S.
The migrants plan to head to the border
on Sunday, setting up a showdown with the
Trump administration — which has warned
that some could face detention, prosecution
and deportation. Most Central American
migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. cite
the threat of gang violence in their home-
lands.
The lawyers and advocates met one-on-
one with some of the migrants but did not
coach them on what to say and what not to
say when they meet with U.S. immigration
officers on Sunday, said Alex Mensing, an
organizer of the effort with the Pueblos Sin
Fronteras group.
Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen
warned this week that any person trying to
cross into the U.S. who makes false claims
to immigration authorities will subject to
criminal prosecution. She said prosecution
was also possible for any people who might
assist or coach immigrants to make false
claims in bids to enter the U.S.
Nielsen’s threat is consistent with the
administration’s narrative of widespread
asylum fraud and claims that asylum-seekers
are coached on what to tell U.S. authorities.
The secretary also said asylum seekers in
the caravan should seek protection in the
first safe country they reach, including
Mexico.
Mensing said the lawyers helping the
migrants might offer opinions on individ-
ual cases, just like any lawyer would for a
client.
“We always emphasize you have to tell
the truth,” Mensing said.
Caravans have been a fairly common tac-
tic for advocacy groups to bring attention
to asylum-seekers and the latest is smaller
than previous efforts compared to previous
border surges, but gained huge visibility
after Trump unleashed strong criticism
when it began March 25 in the Mexican city
of Tapachula, near the Guatemala border.
The caravan drew as many as 1,000 peo-
ple as it crossed Mexico as Trump and top
aides portrayed them as a significant threat
and evidence of a dysfunctional border.

Stocks finish mixed as Amazon leads rally

NEW YORK — U.S. stocks fin-
ished with a split decision Friday
after a wobbly day of trading.
Amazon led a rally among retail-
ers, but Exxon Mobil dragged
energy companies lower to end an
uneven week on Wall Street.
So far the first-quarter earnings
season has been a strong one for
U. S. companies, but it hasn’t
thrilled investors. On Friday
Amazon, Microsoft and Expedia
all climbed after reporting earn-
ings, but Exxon, Charter
Communications and Starbucks
all slumped. According to FactSet,
about 80 percent of the S&P com-
panies that have reported their
results have announced a larger
per-share profit than analysts
expected.
High-dividend companies like
utilities rose as bond yields
slipped, but defense contractors
fell. Asian stocks rose following
the landmark summit of the leaders
from North and South Korea.
This week investors worried that
rising raw materials costs, as well
as higher interest rates and wages,
could eat into corporate profits.
Meanwhile they were pleased with
strong results from Facebook,
Amazon, Microsoft and others.
The S&P 500 index finished the
week almost exactly where it start-
ed.

Economic growth slowed to 2.3 percent pace in Q1

WASHINGTON — The U. S.
economy slowed to a moderate 2.3
percent annual growth rate in the
first quarter as consumer spending
turned in the weakest performance
in nearly five years. Still, the
January-March increase came in
better than expected, supporting
hopes for a solid rebound for the
rest of the year.
The Commerce Department
reported Friday that the gain in the
gross domestic product, the econ-
omy’s total output of goods and
services, followed a 2.9 percent
rise in the fourth quarter and gains
above 3 percent in the previous
two quarters.
Many economists had forecast
that growth would slip below 2
percent in the first quarter, reflect-
ing a big pullback by consumers
after a torrid pace of spending in
the fourth quarter. Recent history
has shown a pattern of weakness
in the first quarter, reflecting in
part seasonal data quirks. Analysts
expect growth to surpass 3 percent
in the current quarter.
Consumer spending, which
accounts for 70 percent of eco-
nomic activity, decelerated
sharply from a 4 percent growth
rate in the fourth quarter to a 1.1
percent pace in the first quarter.
That was offset somewhat by
gains in inventory building by
businesses and a lower trade
deficit.
Analysts viewed the first quarter
slowdown as temporary, with con-
sumers expected to boost their
spending amid a low unemploy-
ment rate and the initial impact of
the $1.5 trillion in tax cuts that
Congress approved in December.
Over the past four quarters, GDP
growth has averaged 2.9 percent,
just below the 3 percent projec-
tion the Trump administration
used in its budget for next year.
While the administration
expects the economy to grow at
rates of 3 percent for the rest of
this decade, private analysts are
less optimistic. They say that
growth will be bolstered by the
tax cuts and increased government
spending for this year and next
year. But then they expect growth
levels to return to the lackluster
rates of around 2 percent as the
boost from fiscal stimulus wears
off and the economy starts to feel
the adverse effects of rising inter-
est rates.
The Federal Reserve is expected
to keep lifting its key interest rate
to prevent unwanted inflation, and
big federal budget deficits are like-
ly to push up government borrow-
ing costs.
“Growth rates around 3 percent
are not sustainable but for the next
couple of years all the government
stimulus is going to provide a lot
of economic juice, ” said Mark
Zandi, chief economist at
Moody’s Analytics.
The Trump administration dis-
agrees, believing that its program
of corporate and individual tax
cuts, regulatory reform and
tougher enforcement of trade laws
will lift the economy to sustained
levels of higher economic
growth. Private economists, how-
ever, are worried that these efforts
will run up against weak growth in
the labor force as many baby
boomers retire and lackluster
gains in productivity.

Sleep mode? Tech giants’ kids’ ‘fixes’ amount to baby steps

NEW YORK — Facebook is adding a
“sleep” mode to its Messenger Kids
service to let parents limit when their
kids can use it.
It’s the latest concession that tech
companies are making as critics ques-
tion whether they should be targeting
kids at all. Among their chief con-
cerns: The effects on kids are not yet
known, and companies might not have
children’s best interests at heart when
tech for kids is such a lucrative market.
Rather than kill the services com-
pletely, as some critics want,
Facebook, Amazon and Google are
mostly tinkering at the edges. That
leaves open the underlying questions
of whether their products truly serve a
need for the youngest set and if they
are good for them.
In December, Facebook created a
kids-friendly version of its Messenger
app. It has no ads and gives parents
plenty of controls over whom their
children can chat with. The thinking
was that while the regular apps are
designed for people 13 or over,
younger kids were on it anyway.
Facebook saw Messenger Kids as a
way to give the younger set a safer
option.
Parents can now specify the times
kids aren’t allowed on — either as a
one-time restriction or something
recurring, such as after 9 p.m. every
school night.

revocation for Silicon Valley mogul
SAN FRANCISCO — A California appeals court upheld a
judge’s decision to revoke probation for a Silicon Valley
internet mogul who made $300 million at age 25 and
appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” before pleading
guilty years later to domestic violence.
A division of the 1st District Court of Appeal in San
Francisco on Thursday rejected claims by Gurbaksh
Chahal that the judge made numerous errors.
An email message seeking comment to an attorney for
Chahal was not immediately returned.
Chahal made $300 million in 2007 when he sold his
digital advertising company to Yahoo.
A year later, he appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”
in a segment that highlighted his success and promoted
him as a highly eligible bachelor.
He pleaded guilty in April 2014 to misdemeanor domes-
tic violence charges after prosecutors said surveillance
footage from his San Francisco penthouse showed him
punching and kicking his girlfriend more than 100 times
and trying to smother her with a pillow.

Cytokinetics: 1Q Earnings Snapshot

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO — Cytokinetics Inc. on
Thursday reported a loss of $30.3 million in its first quar-
ter.
The South San Francisco-based company said it had a
loss of 56 cents per share.
The biopharmaceutical company posted revenue of $5.3
million in the period.
Cytokinetics shares have declined 5.5 percent since the
beginning of the year. The stock has fallen 54 percent in
the last 12 months.

Sequoia, Terra Nova sweep PAL team track titles

While the postseason for track and field is
all about times and distances necessary to
advance to the state meet, the regular season
is all about scoring points.
So while the postseason is more about the
individual, the dual meet regular season is
all about the team, where every finish in a
race or jump could be the difference between
the team winning and losing.
So there is still something to be said for
winning a division dual meet regular-season
title and in the Peninsula Athletic League,
that meant there were none better than
Sequoia in the Bay Division and Terra Nova
in the Ocean, as both schools swept the
boys’ and girls’ team titles in their respec-
tive divisions.
“That’s the closest thing to the truth that
I preach. I probably have five athletes who
have a shot at making CCS. But I have a
team of 86. How do I make the experience
worthwhile (for the rest of the team)?” said
Terra Nova head coach Jared Steele. “To go
5-0 (in league), they feel like they’ve done
something for the team. … The boys beat
Half Moon Bay by a point and Capuchino
by two points.”
Both Terra Nova teams posted perfect 5-0
records, as did the Sequoia boys, who won
their second straight Bay Division team
title. The Sequoia girls went 4-1 and tied
Menlo-Atherton atop the standings, but the
Cherokees were declared the champions
after beating the Bears head to head — their
first PAL title since 1979.
“The cool thing (about dual meets is) it’s
team focused,” said Sequoia head coach
Mike McCrae. “You can really get the kids
feeling like they’re part of something.”
While depth is certainly a factor in win-
ning team titles, having talent certainly
helps as well. While the Terra Nova boys’
appeared to have depth throughout all 15
events, the Tigers’ strength was in the speed
events and Elias Sanchez in the distance
races.

Davis looms for Warriors

That means the Golden State Warriors’
defense will face a far different test than
what San Antonio presented in the first
round of the NBA playoffs when New
Orleans arrives for Game 1 of the Western
Conference semifinals Saturday night on
the defending champions’ home floor.
The pace. The playmakers. And, of course,
the load that is Davis.
Davis’ daunting playoff averages: 33
points, 12 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per
game.

“It was tough. We were still learning when
he was here,” Davis said.

change everything again.”
Golden State gets it. There was a stretch
last month the four All-Stars were out and
the Warriors lost seven of 10.
Now, they might get back a big reinforce-
ment: Stephen Curry. The two-time MVP
was listed as questionable for Saturday’s
series opener as he works back from a
sprained left knee he hurt March 23.
“Totally different series from what we just
faced,” Kerr said of a five-game first round
with San Antonio. “Very much about pace.
They like to get out and run, where the Spurs
are more of a half-court team, so it’s an
adjustment, a big adjustment. And obvious-
ly, Davis is one of the very best players on
earth.”

Hillsdale stays in hunt for Bay title

The Hillsdale Knights are not back-
ing down.
Friday the 13th proved a momentous
day for the Knights with their 10-
inning victory over Peninsula Athletic
League Bay Division frontrunner Sacred
Heart Prep. Since then, Hillsdale (7-3
PAL Bay, 15-6 overall) has won five
straight league games, including series
sweeps of Sequoia and Menlo School.
With a 7-3 home win Friday over
Menlo (2-6, 6-12), Hillsdale remains a
half game back of first-place SHP in the
Bay Division standings. This leaves
Hillsdale on the verge of clinching one
of the league’s five automatic Central
Coast Section playoff berths.
Hillsdale, though, is thinking big.
“Absolutely we’re thinking division
title, ” Hillsdale manager James
Madison said. “We’re thinking, why
not? That’s what we say every day to
ourselves. … You can’t always assume
you’re going to get a chance like this
again. So we’re going to give it all
we’ve got and we’ll see what happens
down the stretch.”
Hillsdale hasn’t won a Bay Division
championship in modern history, with
PAL records going back to 1997. In
2015, the Knights enjoyed an unde-
feated league run to win the PAL Ocean
Division title. They also won a Lake
Division crown in 2008.

Frank takes over SHP girls’ polo program

Sacred Heart Prep announced Thursday that
Jamie Frank, an assistant for the boys’ water
polo team, was named the new director of the
girls’ polo program and the new varsity head
coach.
Frank is replacing Jon Burke, who is leav-
ing SHP to take a position with York School
in Monterey.
“[Frank is] an accomplished head coach
who’s got both the experience and tempera-
ment to keep the program moving forward,”
SHP Assistant Principal of Athletics Frank
Rodriguez said in a press release. “The
majority of our girls have played for him at
one point or another over the past few years
and they are absolutely thrilled that he’ll be
on the pool deck directing them next fall.”
This will be Frank’s first high school head
coaching job, but he has been working as a
head coach with the Stanford Water Polo
Club since 2012 where he runs the U16
boys’ team. His 2016 and 2017 squads were
both crowned Junior Olympic champions.
But having been around the school’s water
polo programs, both boys’ and girls’, gives
Frank the confidence he can continue SHP’s
success. Under Burke, the Gators won nine
Central Coast Section Division II titles in a
row, from 2007 to 2016. Last season, SHP
finished runner-up to Leland in the inaugural
CCS Open Division final.
“The work of the athletic department and
the coaches before me, namely Jon Burke,
have created an amazing platform to work
with outstanding student-athletes,” Frank
said in press release. “I look forward to
building on what has already been estab-
lished to create an environment where stu-
dent-athletes can thrive both in the pool and
out.”
Frank is a 2005 graduate of Aragon High
School, where he starred in both water polo
and swimming, earning Daily Journal Boys’
Swimmer of the Year honors his senior year.
He parlayed that into a polo and swimming
career at UC Irvine, where he became a three-
time Academic All-American.
“[Frank] is absolutely the right person to
assume this leadership role in our water polo
program,” Rodriguez said.

LAS VEGAS — The San Jose Sharks made
it a priority to get faster following a loss in
the Stanley Cup Final to Pittsburgh two
years ago.
The Sharks looked awfully slow and lost
at times in the 7-0 rout at the hands of the
Vegas Golden Knights in their second-round
series opener.
Vegas outhit the Sharks, 48-33.
Vegas had 15 takeaways, San Jose had six.
Vegas blocked 26 shots, the Sharks 13.
San Jose was whistled for 10 penalties;
Vegas just five.
“We had a laundry list of issues,” coach
Peter DeBoer said. “We weren’t good, and
they beat us. It’s obviously not pretty and
we know we have to be better across the
board.”
The Sharks don’t have much time, and
maybe that’s a good thing. Game 2 is
Saturday night.
San Jose won’t have forward Evander
Kane, who was suspended one game for
cross-checking Vegas forward Pierre-

Division as he had the fastest times in the
800 (2:00.26), 1,600 (4:22.66) and the
3,200 (9.41.1) — all personal records.
Daniel Abad was the Tigers’ designated
speedster, showing well in both the 100 and
200, while also helping out in the 4x100 and
4x400 relays, as well as the triple jump.
“He’s always been a competitor in PAL
finals, but not one who could make it to
CCS,” Steele said. “He came out this year said
he really wanted to take it on (try to qualify
for CCS). During cross country, I gave him
some sprint workouts and he dropped a 23.9
in the 200.”
Jack Solano gave the Tigers another versa-
tile athlete, being among the best in the
Ocean in the 100 hurdles, while also being
one of the division’s best high jumpers.
Steele said the Terra Nova girls had a deeper
team than the boys and the Lady Tigers had a
much easier time in posting their undefeated
league mark.
“The girls were a much more competitive
team all around. Point wise, I think the clos-
est (meet) was 20 points,” Steele said.
Senior Holly Skoufos was the foundation
for the Lady Tigers, excelling in the 200, 400
and 800. She also competed in the high jump
on occasion.
“Tuesdays are horizontal jump days, so she
would go over and train,” Steele said.
“Basically, no one on the team is allowed to
do just two events. [Athletes] help the team in
so many capacities.”
Carly Watts provides an intimidating pres-
ence in the throws where she has the divi-
sion’s best distances in both the shot put and
discus. Isabel Magat is solid in the distance
races, with top-10 marks in both the 1,600
and 3,200.
In the Bay Division, Sequoia relied on solid
production from established stars, but also
got some unexpected results from other ath-
letes.

“It leads into the pep talks before each
meet,” McCrae said. “We don’t know who will
be the athlete (to do something unexpected)
this week, but it will be one of [the athletes].”
On the girls’ side, that would be pole vaulter
Sam Brook who, in just two years of compet-
ing in arguably the most technical event in
track and field, is already one of the best in
the PAL. Brook set a school record of 9 feet, 2
inches in the final dual meet of the season
this week.
Eva Gillet, who runs the 800, 1,600 and
4x400 relay, is the senior anchor and three-
year team captain for the Cherokees. Her first
three meets of the season, she doubled in the
800 and 1,600. She got sick during spring
break and is just now starting to round back
into form.
“If she can get completely healthy, we real-
ly want her to end her high school career with
an incredible PAL final and CCS experience,”
McCrae said.
Balancing out Gillet in the distance races is
junior sprinter Gianna Colombo, who runs
the 100, 200, hurdles, triple jumps and is a
relay runner.
“She’s just a quiet performer,” McCrae said.
“I go home after a dual meet and start looking
at the results. She’s one or two in the 100,
one or two in the triple jump.”
The Sequoia boys are led by sprinter Ryan
Reed, who McCrae calls his “workhorse,” and
jumper Henry Utrecht.
“[Reed] is incredibly focused. He’s been a
great leader for us,” McCrae said. “[Utrecht] is
a very athletic guy. He also has the right
mind-set to approach three intense events
(high jump, long jump and triple jump).”
But it was a couple of performances from
sophomore distance runner Alonso Gonzales
that catapulted the Cherokees to the champi-
onship. Against Carlmont, Gonzales came
out of nowhere to win the 1,600. Against M-
A, he set a personal record in capturing the
3,200 race.
“The energy level of the team just went
through the roof (after those races),” McCrae
said. “[Gonzales] is a gamer. The more impor-
tant the meet, he steps it up one more notch.”

What’s most impressive about
Hillsdale’s current Bay Division run is the
team has played its best baseball since los-
ing its best starting pitcher. Through five
starts, senior right-hander Jaxon Skidmore
posted a 4-0 record with a 1.17 ERA. Due to
a bout of arm soreness in late March, how-
ever, Skidmore hasn’t made a start since
March 23.
Enter right-hander Jason Alba, who has
entered the rotation March 24 and has post-
ed a 3-1 record, including his most recent
win Friday. The junior soldiered through six
innings, including setting down the side in
order in his final inning of work.
“It’s amazing because coming into the
season he wasn’t really going to be our 1-2
guy,” Hillsdale catcher Matthew Leong said.
“But start after start, he’s just been able to
gain more confidence. Just being able to
throw strikes more consistently is good.”

just really believe in each other. And every-
body can really drive the ball.”
Then in the third, Leong went large. After
a leadoff single by Thomas Karpishin,
Leong cashed in with a two-run home run to
left field.
“It’s a philosophy of ours,” Madison said
of scoring early. “It’s a fighter’s mentality.
We want to throw the first punch. We don’t
want to have our backs against the wall. …
If you can do that, I think you change the
whole outlook of the game. Start fast and
finish strong is what we talk about.”
Then, after Menlo broke through in the
fifth inning, Hillsdale answered right back.

For Menlo, Nam’s home run swing was a
key at-bat in that the junior hasn’t played
for three weeks.
“When we played against Sequoia, he
started having these migraine headaches
and stuff,” Reynoso said. “Now, it was
going into dizziness and upset stomachs
and stuff. … He was getting migraines and
stuff when he was in the eighth grade and
now it’s getting worse.”
Nam — one of Menlo’s top players —
also pitched the sixth inning, setting down
the side in order with commanding stuff.
“He’s a gamer,” Reynoso said. “He gives
us what he can, when he can.”
Hillsdale countered with Skidmore, who
retired Menlo in order in the seventh to end
it. It was just the second pitching appear-
ance in over a month for the senior right-
hander.
“Now, to have a guy like Skidmore clos-
ing games, or possibly coming in to start
when a game’s on the line in a CCS situa-
tion, we feel good about that,” Madison
said.
Sitting a half game ahead of first-place
SHP in the Bay Division standings,
Hillsdale has four regular-season games left
to play. SHP has five games remaining.

OAKLAND — Stephen Curry is impatient
and eager to get back in a game for the
Golden State Warriors, yet he knows it’s not
worth risking re-injuring his left knee by
pushing his return too soon.
The two-time MVP on Friday went
through his first 5-on-5 scrimmage since
the injury but coach Steve Kerr wasn’t ready
to proclaim Curry a go for Saturday night —
that might not be decided until after the
morning shootaround. Kerr listed Curry’s
status as questionable for a second straight
day ahead of Game 1 of the Western
Conference semifinals against the New
Orleans Pelicans at Oracle Arena.

“They come up with those snazzy words for
a reason — doubtful, questionable, proba-
ble. I’ve learned a lot about what those
words mean this year. Just trying to work
my way up, do what I need to do, do whatev-

training staff and coach needs to see to get
me back out there. That’s the only thing I
can really focus on right now. It is good to
be back actually playing basketball and
doing basketball things.”

feels pretty good. I don’t have any pain
with doing things I’ve been doing.”
Curry wore compression leggings Friday
to protect his sprained knee, which has
sidelined him since the injury March 23. It
was bad luck given that’s the same day he
returned from a six-game absence because of
a hurt right ankle.
He was happy to not need a brace he tried
out Thursday. The Warriors eliminated the
San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the first-
round series with a 99-91 win Tuesday night
and Curry wants to make sure he doesn’t dis-
rupt any flow or momentum with the team
on a roll.
“The priority for us is to be the best team
we can be,” he said. “When I’m 100 percent
healthy and doing what I need to do I obvi-
ously try to lead that charge but right now
the conversations become how can you
manage those minutes and still be produc-
tive and still have a cohesive lineup and
flow to the game and all that type of stuff.
That’s what Coach has to think through.”
Curry said he wasn’t trying to persuade
Kerr or Lane to let him play Saturday.
“There’s no real politicking at all, it’s not
that serious. It’s a matter of how you feel,
can you do this, can you do that and check
off all the boxes along the way,” he said.
“Once I get through all those checkpoints
and have confidence in myself and my body
I’ll be out there, whether that’s tomorrow
night or Monday or Tuesday, whenever
Game 2 is, that’s the process that I’m all too
familiar with.”

Raiders trade back again, get defensive lineman

ALAMEDA — Jon Gruden’s first NFL draft
since leaving the broadcast booth has been a
busy one.
One day after trading back in the first round,
the Oakland Raiders remained one of the
NFL’s most active teams in the draft Friday
night with another series of trades.
Oakland began by trading down in the sec-
ond round and acquiring defensive lineman
P.J. Hall from Sam Houston State with the
57th overall pick, then made another deal to
move up in the third round to get offensive
tackle Brandon Parker.
The Raiders later dealt away two more picks
to move up to 87th overall and drafted line-
backer Arden Key from LSU.
“I was really surprised,” Hall said. “I hadn’t
heard about me going in the second round at
all during this process. It really shocked me
once I got the phone call.”
The Raiders acquired Hall with an eye on
improving the interior of their defensive
line. Oakland had 31 sacks in 2017, only 1
1/2 from players playing full time inside.
Hall should be an immediate help. The 6-
foot-1, 310-pounder had 42 sacks in four sea-
sons at Sam Houston State and was the
Southland Conference defensive player of the
year in 2016.
An edge rusher who alternated between
standing up and lining up with his hand on
the ground during his first three college sea-
sons, Hall switched to defensive tackle as a
senior where his quickness helped make up
for a size disadvantage.
“Whenever I had to go inside I was way
more athletic than a lot of the guards I went
against,” Hall said. “That helps a lot. It was a
little tough because it was my first time ever
playing it but as the season went along I got
more used to it, got comfortable playing it,
then it got better.”
The Raiders are thin inside. Eddie
Vanderdoes and Justin Ellis were the starters
in 2017 but Vanderdoes is coming off a torn
ACL in his left knee suffered in Oakland’s
final regular-season game. Jihad Ward, the
44th overall pick in 2016, has one career
sack in 21 games.
Hall was taken on the second day of the
draft despite not getting invited to the NFL
combine in February. The snub, he said, was
extra motivation.
“I was a little down about it for like a day or
two, but after that I felt like it helped me,”
Hall said. “I got more time to prepare for my
pro day and I had an excellent pro day. I
crushed it. I feel that’s kind of what raised my
stock.”
To get Hall, Oakland shipped the 41st over-
all pick to Tennessee in exchange for the
57th and 89th overall picks.
Then Gruden and general manager Reggie
McKenzie worked the phones and made
another trade to grab the first pick in the third
round. The Raiders traded the 75th, 152nd and
212th overall picks to Baltimore for the
65th, which they used to get Parker.
Parker is a two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference offensive lineman of the year
who started four seasons at left tackle for
North Carolina A&T. According to the
Raiders, Parker did not allow a sack during his
college career, although he disputed that.
“I think I gave up maybe one or two sacks,”
Parker said. “I don’t know where that came
from.”
Parker’s selection came on the heels of the
Raiders drafting Kolton Miller with the 15th
overall pick. Miller is expected to compete
for the right tackle job while Parker will like-
ly back up left tackle Donald Penn.

The NBA, which last expanded in 2004,
is looking to get the jump on Mexico City,
a sprawling metropolis of more than 20
million people that opened an NBA-ready
arena in 2012.
That facility hosted a pair of NBA regu-
lar-season games each of the last two sea-
sons , drawing an average of more than
20,000 fans.
“You can feel it, you can smell it, you
can breathe it in the streets.” said Gilberto
Hernandez, president of the Mexican
Basketball Federation. “They’re just crav-
ing basketball.”
Of course, there are a number of chal-
lenges that must be addressed before inter-
national expansion becomes a reality —
especially so for Mexico City, which is
7,350 feet above sea level (more than
2,000 feet higher than Denver), is plagued
by crime and economic-disparity issues,
and might have trouble signing top players
who are reluctant to step outside their cul-
tural comfort zone.
But the appeal is enormous.
“It’s the largest city in the Western
Hemisphere,” NBA Commissioner Adam
Silver said. “It’s part of a 130 million-per-
son country. There’s a very strong, pas-
sionate Mexican-American fan base in the
United States. This is also a potential gate-
way for all of Latin America.”
The NHL first floated the prospect of a
European division in the late 1960s.
Detroit Red Wings owner Bruce Norris was
so fixated on the idea that he launched his
own team, the London Lions, who played a
72-game schedule against top European
teams in 1973-74. Unfortunately, the
Lions never had a league of their own, so
the team quietly disbanded after that single
season, leaving behind nothing more than
a cool logo .
Over the last two decades, the NHL has
scheduled regular-season contests in
Europe and Japan, including two games in
Stockholm this past November. The Asian
market also remains a top priority, espe-
cially heading into the 2022 Olympics in
Beijing — though the league sent mixed
signals by refusing to send its players to
this year’s Winter Games in South Korea.
For the NHL and the NBA, the enormous
travel times between North America and
either Europe or Asia remain the biggest
obstacle to adding teams in those markets.
Unless some sort of supersonic transporta-
tion becomes available, it would simply be
too difficult to incorporate such faraway
cities as London and Tokyo into an 82-
game schedule, which requires teams to
play games all through the week and some-
times on back-to-back days.
Also working against European expan-
sion: the lack on U.S.-quality arenas (even
the most modern facilities generally lack
the size and amenities to generate as much
revenue as their American counterparts) and
established basketball and hockey leagues
in many countries would surely object to
the NBA or NHL coming in to steal their
limelight.
For the NFL, the challenges aren’t nearly
so daunting, and the potential rewards
could be even greater for a league that has
faced declining TV ratings and lots of bad
publicity about the devastating physical
toll on its players.
There are no major pro football leagues
in Europe. Teams play only once a week,
generally on Sunday, and the entire regular-
season schedule is just 16 games. A team in
London would have to make the cross-
Atlantic trek no more than eight times a
year, and the demands could be lessened by
scheduling back-to-back road games, halv-
ing the number of long-range roundtrips.
A London team could even maintain its
base of operations in the U.S., essentially
playing all its games on the road but per-
haps making it easier to sign players in
free agency and cope with legal issues and
currency fluctuations.
Travel would not be a concern for a
Mexican team. The NBA, NFL and Major
League Baseball have all played regular-
season games south of the border — next
weekend, in fact, the Los Angeles Dodgers
will meet the San Diego Padres in a three-
game series at Monterrey .
MLB seems the most logical candidate to
launch a Mexican team, given baseball’s
popularity and the large number of Latin
American players in the majors, but the
NBA is leading the way. Silver wants to put
a G League development team in Mexico
City, testing the waters for a possible NBA
franchise.
“As we look down the road, frankly, to
see whether there can be an opportunity to
even dream about an NBA franchise here in
Mexico City, we believe it makes sense as
a first step to have a development league
team here to work out some of the issues,
to better understand what it would mean to
have a team in Mexico,” Silver said.
There are still plenty of questions to
answer, that’s for sure.
But one is crystal clear.
Are U.S. leagues going international?
No doubt about it.

Day,” receiving its world premiere at Aurora
Theatre Company.

large back window where the engine is
located on diesel buses.
These latest additions to the SamTrans
fleet also feature low-maintenance disc
brakes and a low floor design, which
includes ramps instead of lifts and a Q-Pod
wheelchair restraint system, which is safer
and easier to operate than the existing
ratchet-based system, according to a press
release.
Proterra’s composite bus body is much
lighter and easier to maintain than the steel
frames of the diesel fleet, and has an expect-
ed life span of up to 18 years. A high power-
to-weight ratio allows for acceleration of
zero-to-20 mph in seven seconds.
The batteries are expected to last six to
eight years, after which time buses see a
gradual decline in mileage.

handle about 37 standing riders.
Mac Burns, regional sales director for
Proterra, said he regularly hears from riders
in cities where Proterra’s electric buses are
already in use who say it’s worth the wait to
let the diesel buses pass by and catch the
electric ones instead. He also said people
living near electric bus routes celebrate the
noise reduction, while bus drivers half-jok-
ingly complain the ride is so quiet they can
now hear everyone’s cellphone conversa-
tions.
As for safety concerns some have with
respect to quiet electric vehicles, Burns said
cities could always request some sort of
speaker be installed on buses, but as of now,
no city the company has worked with has
felt the need.
Proterra’s batteries are manufactured in
Burlingame, and its buses can be found in
nearby Stockton and San Jose, and through-
out the country in Nevada, Kentucky, Texas
and Massachusetts, among other states.
These buses are made possible by tech-
nology that has only become available in
the last four or so years, which is partly why
SamTrans has awarded the $9.2 million con-
tract when it did.

on our residents and I think it’s time we
hold them accountable for those impacts.”
A Santa Clara County-funded nexus study
aimed at assessing the impact of future
development in its unincorporated area
informed the San Mateo County officials’
request its southern neighbor adopt afford-
able housing impact fees at the maximum
rate set forth in the study. It had concluded
the maximum affordable housing impact fee
that could be justified for academic space is
$143.10 per square foot while the maxi-
mum fee that could be imposed for faculty

aimed at calculating the maximum fee that
can be justified and that the recommended
fees have yet to be determined.
“There are no entities anywhere in the
two counties that are being requested to pay
that kind of fee,” she said. “We believe the
fee for Stanford should be placed in context
with what others do pay.”
McCown said the university has pro-
posed paying a fee of $20 per square foot
for the university’s future academic devel-
opment, which is higher than what peer
blockchain, a nonprofit called the Tezos
Foundation was founded in Switzerland in
April of 2017 and a contract allegedly out-
lining the sale of Dynamic Ledger Solutions
to the foundation was signed by the compa-
ny and the foundation in June, according to
the suit.
At around the same time, Draper is
believed to have invested $1.5 million in
Tezos and publicly announced his invest-
ment in May, which the plaintiffs say
caused interest in the currency’s impending
initial coin offering, or ICO, in July to sky-
rocket, according to the suit.
Draper did not respond to requests for
comment on this story.
For the some two weeks in July, the Tezos
ICO was open, it allegedly raised 65,627
bitcoin and 361,122 of the digital cryp-
tocurrency Ethereum, the combined total of
which were valued at the time at an estimat-

project’s effect on the county’s affordable

received some $1 million in fees for the
university’s Redwood City campus’ effect
on the North Fair Oaks neighborhood while
Redwood City received some $20 million
in impact fees, Slocum said the county has
been behind in collecting fees from the uni-
versity for its impact on the county’s
affordable housing crisis.
“San Mateo County has never gotten any
of the affordable housing money from
Santa Clara County,” he said. “I don’t want
to give Stanford any wiggle room.”

Hollywood roars back into action

with new summer movie offerings

starts early this year in
Hollywood with the potentially
record-breaking release of
“Avengers: Infinity War”
Thursday, and the marquee Marvel
superheroes couldn’t be coming
at a better time.
The box office for the year is
down nearly three percent, and
the industry is looking to redeem
itself after last summer, which,
despite hits like “Wonder
Woman,” had its worst perform-
ance in more than a decade.
Although all studios are embrac-
ing the year-round blockbuster
schedule and massive hits can
emerge in any month, like
“Black Panther” in February, “It”
in September and “Star Wars” in
December, with work and school
vacations, nothing can beat the
summer’s potential.
This summer movie going sea-
son, which typically runs from
the first weekend in May through
Labor Day, could get things back
on track. Two of the most prof-
itable franchises have major
films on the slate. The Walt
Disney Company and Marvel
have “Avengers: Infinity War”
(April 27) which some experts
are predicting will score the
biggest opening of all time, and
Universal Pictures is releasing
the sequel to the fifth highest
domestic earner of all time,
“Jurassic World: Fallen
Kingdom,” on June 22.
And as with every summer,
there are more than a handful of
sequels and familiar brands com-
ing to theaters, including:
“Deadpool 2” (May 18); “Solo: A
Star Wars Story” (May 25); “The
Incredibles 2” (June 15);
“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”
(June 29); “The First Purge” (July
4); “Ant-Man and the Wasp”
(July 6);  “Hotel Transylvania 3:
Summer Vacation” (July 13);
“The Equalizer 2” (July 20);
“Mamma Mia: Here We Go
Again!” (July 20); and “Mission:
Impossible — Fallout” (July 27).
But Wall Street Journal reporter

According to Box Office Mojo,
in 2017, movie ticket sales were
at a 25-year low, and competition
for audience attention is only
intensifying. Netflix has a whole
slate of summer films too, from
an Adam Sandler and Chris Rock
comedy (“The Week Of,” April
27) to the WWII-set adaptation
of “The Guernsey Literary and
Potato Peel Pie Society. ” This
year too has shown a concentra-
tion of box office dollars on just
a few films — “Black Panther,”
Fritz noted, accounted for 23 per-
cent of the ticket sales in the
first three months of the year.
And it’s at least part of the rea-
son why many studios are tout-
ing the diversity of their slates
beyond the spectacle of super-
heroes and blockbusters.
“Today, it’s even more impor-
tant that there is a wide variety of
films out there, films that are
provocative, that are thrilling,
that obviously are entertaining
and that you’re presenting them
in new and exciting ways,” said
Jim Orr, Universal Pictures’ pres-
ident of domestic theatrical dis-
tribution. “We have right now a
theater-going audience who is
discerning and I think we need to
keep that in mind with every-
thing we put forth.”
Universal has “Jurassic World”
and “Mamma Mia!” sequels, sure,
but it is also releasing Dwayne
Johnson’s action-thriller
“Skyscraper” and its indie arm
Focus Features has films like the
dark dramedy “Tully” (May 4),
with Charlize Theron, Spike
Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” (Aug.
10) and documentaries about Mr.
Rogers (“Won’t You Be My
Neighbor, ” June 8) and Pope
Francis (May 18).
Warner Bros., home of Wonder
Woman, Batman and the other
DC Comics superheroes, doesn’t
even have a major DC film on the
slate this summer (aside from the
animated “Teen Titans GO! To the
Movies,” July 27). Instead, its
slate boasts films like the star
(and female)-driven “Ocean’s 8,”
with Sandra Bullock, Cate
Blanchett, Rihanna and others,
comedies like “Tag” (June 15)
and “Life of the Party” (May 11),
and an adaptation of the popular
book “Crazy Rich Asians” (Aug.
17).
“The business just gets spread
out over 12 months, ” said
Warner Bros. domestic distribu-
tion president Jeff Goldstein.
“It’s not about one particular
season and for a studio, it’s
about opportunistically dating
your movies in a way to maxi-
mize your box office on any
given film. ”
Beyond “Ocean’s 8” there are a
number of gender-flipped reboots
and bawdy female-led comedies,
like “Overboard” (May 4) with
Anna Faris, the “Dirty Rotten
Scoundrels” remake “The Hustle”
(June 29) with Anne Hathaway
and Rebel Wilson, “Book Club”
(May 18) with Jane Fonda, Diane
Keaton, Candice Bergen and
Mary Steenburgen, and “The Spy
Who Dumped Me” (Aug. 3) with
Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.
And action fans can look for-
ward to Mark Wahlberg as an
intelligence officer trying to
smuggle a police officer out of
the country in “Mile 22” (Aug. 3)
and Jason Statham fighting a
shark in “The Meg” (Aug. 10).
Audiences thirsting for more
unconventional fare may just
have to look a little deeper for
the potential hidden gems, like
“Uncle Drew” (June 29), a come-
dy about an aging basketball
team competing in a street tour-
nament, with Lil Rel Howery,
Kyrie Irving and Shaquille
O’Neal, and “Hereditary” (June
8), a trippy horror about the
strange things that start happen-
ing when a family’s matriarch
dies.
Sundance breakouts coming
this summer include “Eighth
Grade” (July 13) from comedian
Bo Burnham, which follows an
eighth grade girl around her last
week of middle school,
“Blindspotting” (July 20) about
a police shooting in Oakland,
and “Sorry to Bother You” (July
6) also Oakland-set, but with a
quirkier sci-fi edge.
There’s the almost too-strange-
to-be-true “The Happytime
Murders” (Aug. 17) from Brian
Henson and starring Melissa
McCarthy, where puppets and
humans co-exist and a private
eye takes on the case of a puppet
on puppet murder.
And then there’s “Hotel
Artemis,” the directorial debut of
“Iron Man 3” screenwriter Drew
Pearce. It’s an original action-
thriller about a hospital for crim-
inals set in a dystopian, near-
future Los Angeles with a star-
studded cast including Jodie
Foster, Sterling K. Brown and
Jeff Goldblum that Global Road
Entertainment is releasing on
June 8. Pearce said there was no
way he could have gotten it made
in the studio system.
“Hopefully this is a rallying
cry. It’s not a sequel, it’s not
based on a comic. It’s not a
reboot. It’s its own eccentric and
hopefully loveable beast of a
movie,” Pearce said.
“I think what we’ve seen in the
last year is movies with real per-
sonality are actually what an
audience is crying out for,
whether that’s tiny movies that
made good like ‘Get Out’ or tak-
ing the superhero blockbuster
like ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and essen-
tially making a quirky New
Zealand comedy out of it, ” he
said. “I think there’s a real
appetite for something that’s
just a little different and a little

tions prior to the one in San Francisco ear-
lier this month, I had never participated in

in my journalism program as a section edi-
tor and newspaper designer. I was deter-
mined to improve on the skills I used most
in the newsroom, which were heavily
weighted toward design but, for my last
contest as a soon-to-be-graduating senior,
I decided to expand my horizons and partic-
ipate in a different type of contest.
In addition to my editing and design
work for my school newspaper, I also write
biweekly articles for my school’s online
publication, where I am able to cover
breaking news events such as local
protests and rallies. Since the beginning of
2018, I have compiled an impressive col-
lection of photos from the 2018 San
Francisco Women’s March, the nationwide
student walkout on March 14 in response
to the Parkland, Florida, shooting, and the
“March For Our Lives” rally that took place
an online forum. As Don moderates, parents
chime in.
Many of the comments, projected for the
audience to see, are so far afield or so ridicu-
lous that the audience is soon laughing so
loud and so hard that the dialogue can’t be
heard. That’s not important because it’s sec-
ondary to the hilarious satire in this first
act.
Act 2 turns far more serious. Eli’s son is
in intensive care with mumps, which he
at times, there is only Ronit. The tension
between them builds to a gorgeous crescen-
do over the course of an afternoon and into
a heady day of escape. Their impassioned
romance functions as much as a release for
the audience as it does for Esti, who has
been suppressing her true desires for so
long. (There is one jaw-dropping moment
between the two women that will probably
get people talking, too. You’ll know it
March 24. I submitted my best protest
photo from each of these events with the
central theme of “people making their
voices heard” for my contest.
In addition to the individual contests that
many students were able to win,
Carlmont’s newspaper, “The Highlander,”
earned a fifth-place award in San Francisco
Best of Show in the category of newspaper
tabloids with 17 or more pages. This con-
vention was the first time that Carlmont
has won this national award.
Although I was never working for the
awards, they do provide me with a sense of
assurance and an even greater sense of
pride. To be ranked as the fifth-best high
school newspaper in the nation is an
incredible feeling, and truly makes me feel
as if the hard work I have invested in this
publication for three years of my life has
paid off.

As I head to college, I plan to pursue
photojournalism as a potential career and
portrait photography as a hobby in my free
time. It was extremely rewarding to be
acknowledged for my photography skills
and reassures me I am capable of being suc-
cessful in this field.
Even if I hadn’t won any awards, my last
journalism convention was a great learning
experience. Each convention reminds me
of how passionate I am about journalism
and the related fields of study such as pho-
tography and design, and how lucky I am
to have found my passion at such a young
age.

Rachel Dolezal documentary fascinating, well-crafted

There’s a scene at the end of the Netflix doc-
umentary about controversial figure Rachel
Dolezal when she enters a DMV and comes
out a few minutes later with a new name. “A
new start,” she says. The whole process
seems painless and courteous. If only she
could change other parts of her identity so
easily.
“The Rachel Divide” is a fascinating, com-
prehensive and well-crafted documentary
about a one-time civil rights activist in
Washington state whose life unraveled after
she was outed as a white woman pretending to
be black.
Director Laura Brownson has masterfully
unpacked and knitted together this compli-
cated figure, who still seems to elude easy
answers. Is she a calculating faker, a perfect
symbol of white privilege? Or is she simply
naive?
This film says she can be both, just as
Dolezal checks both white and black boxes
on the hospital form to describe herself when
her third son is born. Netflix has been criti-
cized for giving a platform to Dolezal, who,
as a media sideshow, has damaged the airing
of actual racial grievances. But it is a film that
raises serious questions about race in America
and it gets some serious answers.
Anyone tuning in hoping that Dolezal has
something more profound to say about her
personal journey other than she is “transra-
cial” are out of luck. She still seems as
stumped by her own curious path as that infa-
mous time in 2015 when she was first
unmasked by a local TV reporter with the
question: “Are you African-American?”

‘The Rachel Divide’ is a fascinating, comprehensive and well-crafted documentary about a
one-time civil rights activist in Washington state whose life unraveled after she was outed as
a white woman pretending to be black.
down. She won’t say she’s white and just end
the controversy. She continues to identify as
black and even doubles down, changing her
name to Nkechi Amare Diallo. “I can’t just go
away,” she warns. But can a white woman
ever really understand systemic discrimina-
tion, racial profiling and self-hatred when
she’s not gone through it?
Perhaps Dolezal is a fame-seeking culture
vulture who loves the narrative of oppres-
sion. Or perhaps, as the film offers, her child-
hood was so awful at the hands of white reli-
gious zealot parents — filled with abuse and
neglect — that she ran as far as she could and
never looked back. If that’s the case, then her
cultural appropriation was more a desperate

The filmmakers recorded Dolezal for over a
year a half, charting the aftermath of her pub-
lic fall and her attempt to rehabilitate herself,
as well as the quiet times with her sons and
sister. Some of the scenes are wrenching, as
her sons — teenager Franklin and former-
adopted-brother-turned-son Izaiah (we told
you it was complicated) — appear like collat-
eral damage, mere bystanders forced to endure
what their mom has unleashed. They are in
many ways the real heroes, caught between
love of mother, gotcha journalism and huge
social movements outside the door.

tortured family history, valid and devastating
criticisms of what her actions mean for the
black community, and even a conspiracy the-
ory for why she was ambushed on camera at
the time she was. Dolezal is also nicely inte-
grated into a larger discussion of modern
America’s grappling with identity fluidity.
Brownson got footage of Dolezal behind
the scenes at the “Today” show and a remark-
able sequence in which she shows us what it
takes to get her hair extensions ready for the
day. There are also sad moments, as when she
scrolls through Instagram and finds ugly
invective hurled at her. (Why she continues
to post anything with so many trolls about
remains a mystery.) The filmmakers also use
old footage of Dolezal leading Black Lives
Matter marches or defending the African-
American community in Spokane — and con-
front the destructive irony of what that
means.
The soundtrack has a quirky collection of
songs that explore identity or seem to com-
ment directly on Dolezal’s dilemma, includ-
ing Ben Harper’s “ID” and the classics “I’ve
Got You Under My Skin” by Cole Porter and
Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be
Misunderstood.”
There are many touches of real art, includ-
ing about halfway through, when Dolezal
asks a friend how she can turn her life around.
“Move to Mars,” she is told. Flash forward to
the last scene: Dolezal is pushing her new-
born in a stroller to a wispy cover of David
Bowie’s “Life on Mars,” the perfect outsider
soundtrack to a woman disliked by white and
blacks alike, charting her own surreal course
along the racial fault lines of current America.
“The Rachel Divide,” a Netflix release, is
rated TV-MA. Running time: 100 minutes.

time.
On the nuclear issue, the leaders
merely repeated a previous vow to rid
their peninsula of nuclear weapons,
saying they will achieve a “nuclear-
free Korean Peninsula through com-
plete denuclearization. ” This kicks
one of the world’s most pressing
issues down the road to a much-antic-
ipated summit between Kim and
President Donald Trump in coming
weeks.
“There is no reference to verifica-
tion, timetables, or an attempt to
define the word ‘complete.’ It does
not reiterate or advance Pyongyang’s
unilateral offer to halt nuclear and
ICBM tests,” said Adam Mount, a sen-
ior defense analyst at the Federation
of American Scientists. “In practice,
this statement should enable a U.S.-
North Korea summit to detail
specifics about what, when, and how
denuclearization would occur, but it
has not offered a head start on that
process. All of the negotiation is left
to a U.S. team that is understaffed and
has little time to prepare.”
Still, the summit produced the spec-
tacle of two men from nations with a
deep and bitter history of acrimony
grinning from ear to ear after Kim
walked over the border to greet Moon,
becoming the first leader of his
nation to set foot on southern soil
since the Korean War. Both leaders
then briefly stepped together into the
North and back to the South.
The summit marks a surreal,
whiplash swing in relations for the
countries, from nuclear threats and
missile tests to intimations of peace
and cooperation. Perhaps the change
is best illustrated by geography: Kim
and Moon’s historic handshake and a
later 30-minute conversation at a
footbridge on the border occurred
within walking distance of the spot
where a North Korean soldier fled
south in a hail of gunfire last year, and
where North Korean soldiers killed
two U.S. soldiers with axes in 1976.
Standing next to Moon after the
talks ended, Kim faced a wall of cam-
eras beaming his image live to the
world and declared that the Koreas are
“linked by blood as a family and com-
patriots who cannot live separately.”
The leaders also vowed to achieve “a
nuclear-free Korean Peninsula
through complete denuclearization,”
something they’ve said before.
The latest declaration between the
Koreas, Kim said, should not repeat
the “unfortunate history of past inter-

China’s Xi calls for
cooperation with India amid tensions
BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping called for
stepped-up cooperation with India during an informal sum-
