D.L.  Moody  

Dwight  L.  Moody  (1837-­‐1899)  was  a  history  maker  simply  because  he  gives  us  
insight  into  what  a  fully  surrendered  life  looks  like.  Have  you  ever  thought  much  
about  the  kind  of  excuses  we  give  God?  Our  Lord  is  not  interested  in  our  “but’s.”  

To  many,  Moody  seemed  the  least  likely  person  that  God  would  use.  His  father  
died  when  he  was  four.  He  was  raised  by  a  single  mom  with  7  kids  in  
extreme  poverty.  He  was  only  able  to  go  to  school  through  the  7th  grade.  He  
struggled  so  much  in  front  of  people  that  the  membership  board  of  his  church  
denied  him  for  membership  at  his  interview  because  he  could  not  pull  it  together.  

Why  would  God  use  a  guy  as  unlikely  as  Moody  to  touch  the  world?  At  his  funeral,  his  friend  Tory  said:  
“Moody  had  no  but’s.”  In  other  words  when  he  said  yes  to  God,  he  said  yes  with  his  whole  life.  

 “However,  I  consider  my  life  worth  nothing  to  me,  if  only  I  may  finish  the  race  and  complete  the  task  the  
Lord  Jesus  h as  given  me-­‐the  task  of  testifying  to  the  gospel  of  God’s  grace.”  —  Acts  20:24  

1)  ARE  YOU  ___________  SO  THAT  G OD  CAN  ______________?  

Is  there  less  of  you  so  there  can  be  more  of  God?  John  the  Baptist  said  it  this  way:  “He  must  increase,  but  I  
must  decrease.”  John  3:30    
 Moody  was  asked:  “Who  has  given  you  the  most  problems,  who  has  haunted  you  more  as  a  minister  and  
interfered  in  your  life  more  than  any  other.”  Moody  replied:  “I  have  had  more  trouble  with  D.L.  Moody  
than  any  other  man  I’ve  ever  met.”  

Two  aspects  of  Moody’s  life  that  we  as  Followers  of  Christ  should  also  have...    

• Decreasing  love  of  the  ______________.  We  should  have  a  decreasing  hunger  for  the  things  
of  this  world.  “Do  not  love  the  world  or  anything  in  the  world.  If  anyone  loves  the  world,  the  
love  of  the  Father  is  n ot  in  him.”  1  John  2:15    
As  you  grow  in  Christ,  is  there  a  decreasing  love  for  the  things  in  this  world  or  are  you  craving  
more  and  more  material  things  hoping  that  will  make  you  happy?  Nowhere  in  the  bible  does  
it  say  it  is  wrong  to  have  nice  things;  what  is  wrong  is  when  nice  things  start  to  ________  us.  
• Decreasing  _______________.  “May  I  never  boast  except  in  the  cross  of  our  Lord  Jesus  Christ.”  
Galatians  6:14a.  In  other  words,  “May  I  never  be  proud  of  myself,  may  I  only  be  proud  of  who  and  
what  God’s  son  Jesus  Christ  did.”  When  God  does  start  to  use  you  —  it  is  easy  to  become  prideful.  

 “God  sends  no  one  away  empty  except  the  one  who  is  full  of  himself.”  D.L.  Moody  

Moody  taught  this  often,  he  said,  “To  those  of  you  who  God  is  using  understand  that  your  spiritual  enemy  
will  attack  you  in  one  of  two  ways:  His  first  p lan  of  attack  is  often  this  “Who  do  you  think  you  are?  You’re  
no  good.  You’re  a  looser.  You  don’t  know  enough,  you’re  not  good  enough,  you  don’t  pray  enough,  you  
don’t  know  enough  Bible,  you’re  going  to  make  a  fool  of  yourself,  who  do  you  think  you  are  to  try  to  
make  a  difference?  And  if  that  doesn’t  work  Satan’s  second  p lan  of  attack  is  this:  as  soon  as  God  starts  to  
use  you  he’ll  say,  “Ah,  you  are  pretty  good,  aren’t  you?  You  may  be  one  of  the  best!”  

Moody  would  say  if  your  spiritual  enemy  couldn’t  get  you  to  think  too  ____________  of  yourself  he  will  
try  to  make  you  think  too  ____________  of  yourself.

2.)  ARE  YOU  _______________  TO  G OD’S  _____________?  

         Moody  loved  to  preach  from:  “God  hath  spoken  once;  twice  have  I  heard  this;  that  power  belongeth  
unto  God.”  Psalms  62:11.  That  power  is  God’s  and  God’s  alone.  

Moody  often  said  “He  who  ____________  the  most,  ____________  the  best.”    The  one  most    
dependent  on  the  power  of  God  is  the  one  God  most  often  will  use.  

Moody  had  such  a  real  intimate  experience  with  God  that  he  only  talked  publicly  one  time  about  what  
had  happened  and  here  is  what  he  said  of  that  experience:  “It  was  almost  too  sacred  an  experience  to  
name  –  Paul  had  an  experience  of  which  he  never  spoke  for  fourteen  years  –  I  can  only  say  God  
revealed  himself  to  me.  I  had  such  an  experience  of  His  holy  love  that  I  had  to  ask  Him  to  stay  His  
hand.”  D.L.  Moody  

Have  you  ever  had  such  an  experience  with  God?  The  Bible  teaches  this  that  if  you  s eek  God  with  your  
whole  heart,  you  will  find  Him.  

Moody’s  life-­‐changing  moment  happened  when  an  evangelist  by  the  name  of  Henry  Varley  was  
preaching  and  Moody  was  in  the  audience  listening  and  Varley  said  this:  

 “The  world  has  yet  to  see  what  God  will  do  with,  and  for,  and  through,  and  in,  and  by  the  man  who  
gives  himself  up  wholly  to  Him.”  Henry  Varley  

To  be  fully  surrendered  to  Jesus  Christ  means  we  write  a  blank  check  on  our  lives  and  say,  “God  you  
cash  my  life  wherever  you  see  fit.”  

3)  DO  YOU  REALLY  _______  THOSE  WHO  DON’T  _______  ________?  

For  most  American  Christians  the  answer  would  have  to  be  “No.”  What  you’ll  see  out  of  a  typical  
Christian  is  a  lot  more  judging  than  you  will  see  loving.  

Luke  15:4:  “Suppose  one  of  you  has  a  hundred  sheep  and  loses  one  of  them.  Does  he  not  leave  the  
ninety-­‐nine  in  the  o pen  country  and  after  the  lost  sheep  until  he  finds  it?”  

As  followers  of  Christ  it’s  easy  to  become  comfortable  with  what  we  want,  and  keep  me  happy  and  do  
what  I  want  rather  than  caring  about  the  people  who  don’t  know  Christ.  

Moody  had  a  divine  love  for  those  who  are  outside  of  God’s  family.  ILLUS:  Moody  and  the  “Great  
Chicago  Fire  of  1871”  

How  long  has  it  been  since  you’ve  sat  down  one-­‐on-­‐one  with  someone  and  talked  to  them  openly  
about  who  Jesus  is?  Do  you  really  love  those  who  don’t  know  Christ?  

 “I  looked  upon  this  world  as  a  wrecked  vessel.  God  has  given  me  a  lifeboat  and  said  to  me,  “Moody,  
save  all  you  can!”  —  D.  L.  Moody
