Unit 5: THINGS THAT MATTER
Type of lesson: developing communicative skills; reading; vocabulary acquisition and
language practice
Time: 50 minutes

COMPETENCES:

Să folosească unele cuvinte noi în propoziții/ fraze proprii

AIMS:
 to bring confidence to students
 to practise and develop newly introduced vocabulary structures
 to motivate students to participate in conversations
 to develop communicative skills by sharing ideas on the topic
 to use time expressions in sentences of their own

Skills: reading, speaking, writing


Teaching techniques: conversation, explanation, brainstorming
Teaching aids: the textbook, worksheets, the blackboard, Power Point presentation
Class organisation: individual, in pairs, group work.
Assumption: the students are supposed to be familiar with the topic from the lesson, as
they are preoccupied by science and inventions

Anticipated problems:
 the topic might not be of extreme interest to the students (not all of them are
curious about historical facts)
 the students might not feel confident enough to speak up

PROCEDURE:

 Activity 1: Greeting, attendance and homework checking.

Objective: To check previous knowledge.


The teacher greets the students, checks the homework. The students answer the
teacher’s greetings, read their homework, and correct it, if necessary (previous
class – test paper)
Technique: Conversation; Checking
Aids: Students’ notebooks
Time: 2 minutes

 Activity2: Warm-up (3 minutes)

The teacher asks students if they like History and if they read or watch on TV
interesting facts about known people. The teacher asks her students how a fairytale
starts. If they do not provide a proper answer she tells them the answer: `Once
upon a time`. The teacher asks questions: what does this sentence have in common
with History? Can you guess what we are going to talk about today?

 Activity 3: Presenting the new lesson

The teacher presents the new lesson, writing the title on the blackboard.
Objective: Students have to be able to discuss about people that are famous for their
work.

Procedure: teacher asks the students some questions, related to famous people. Teacher
wants to know where have they heard or if they have heard about them. They also have to
solve exercise 1 and 2 from page 44.
If they do not know anything or if they do not have enough information they are allowed
to use their phones and find something. After two or three minutes of searching for their
information, they discuss about their answers.
1. Do you know these people?
2. What did they do for us?
3. Are they still alive?
4. Is their work recognised in the world?

Aids: textbook, phones


Language: related to the topic
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-Ss
Possible problems: some students may not have many ideas about the topic. The teacher
will be prepared to give more details, asking other helping questions.
Time: 5 minutes

 Activity 4
Objective: to recognize specific information and being able to use it
Context: the students write Exercise 1 and 3 from page 45

Procedure: the students are asked to recognize the nouns and the adjectives and after that
they have to use some words from the first exercise at exercise number 3, but in the right
form.
Aids: textbook, notebook
Language: words related to science/ inventions (word families)
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss - Ss
Possible problems: students may have difficulties in finding quick answers, because they
do not know some new words.
Time: 5 minutes

 Activity 5: Pre-reading activity

Context: the students are prepared for reading


Objective: the teacher raises students’ expectations by using predictive skills
Procedure: the teacher asks questions: Do you know what we’ll be doing next? Can you
predict the main idea of their life stories? Were they all artists?

Aids: textbook, Power Point presentation


Language: words related to jobs
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss – Ss
Possible problems: Ss may find new unknown words in the movies. The teacher will
have to provide the translation of the new words
Time: 15 minutes

 Activity 6: Reading activity


Context: students start reading exercise 2/ page 46, a text about Sir Isaac Newton
Objective: Skimming the text in order to find the main idea and checking their
predictions.
Procedure : the teacher asks the students not only to read but also to solve this exercise.
The teacher explains the exercise to them and help them with extra-explanations, if they
do not know the new words. The teacher writes on the blackboard some time expressions.
Aids: textbook
Language: words related to science
Interaction: teacher-students, student -student
Possible problems: Ss may find new unknown words in the text. The teacher will have to
provide the translation of the new words
Time: 10 minutes

 Activity 7
Context:speaking time- their opinion on famous people
Objective: To practice speaking (public speaking)
Procedure: : the teacher asks the students to provide answers for a quiz test. They are
allowed to work in groups of four. Each group has a spokesperson. The leader goes to the
blackboard and writes the answers that his team knows.
For each right answer they receive points.
Aids: sheets of paper, quiz test.
Interaction : T- Ss, Ss-Ss
Possible problems: the students may not know to solve this exercise , because they do
not know the words. The teacher helps them with explanations (if necessary). There is a
student on the blackboard counting the good answers.
Time: 7 minutes

 Activity 8: Feed-back and homework

Objective: to consolidate the information ; to give feedback on students’ work


Procedure: students will be able to answer to the teacher’s questions. They will tell their
own opinions about the new things learned in class.
Technique: Explanation
Teacher assigns the homework: Exercise 3/ page 46
Teacher gives marks.
Time: 3 minutes
