Prayer of St.

Thomas Aquinas Before Mass

OMNIPOTENS sempiterne Deus, ecce ALMIGHTY and ever-lasting God, I


accedo ad sacramentum unigeniti Filii tui, approach the sacrament of Thy only-begotten
Domini nostri, Iesu Christi; accedo tamquam Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I come sick to the
infirmus ad medicum vitae, immundus ad doctor of life, unclean to the fountain of
fontem misericordiae, caecus ad lumen mercy, blind to the radiance of eternal light,
claritatis aeternae, pauper et egenus ad and poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and
Dominum caeli et terrae. Rogo ergo earth. Therefore, I implore Thee in Thy great
immensae largitatis tuae abundantiam, generosity, to heal my sickness, to wash away
quatenus meam curare digneris infirmitatem, my defilement, enlighten my blindness, to
lavare foeditatem, illuminare caecitatem, enrich my poverty, and to clothe my
ditare paupertatem, vestire nuditatem; ut nakedness, so that I may receive the bread of
panem Angelorum, Regem regum et angels, the King of kings, and the Lord of
Dominum dominantium, tanta suscipiam lords with reverence and humility, with
reverentia et humilitate, tanta contritione et contrition and devotion, with purity and faith,
devotione, tanta puritate et fide, tali proposito and with such purpose and determination that
et intentione, sicut expedit saluti animae will be expedient to the salvation of my soul.
meae. Da mihi, quaeso, Dominici Corporis et Grant me, I beseech Thee, that I may not only

corpori suo mystico merear incorporari, et Mary, and so received that I may be worthy
inter eius membra connumerari. O to be incorporated into His mystical body,
amantissime Pater, concede mihi dilectum and numbered among His members. O most
Filium tuum, quem nunc velatum in via loving Father, grant me Thy beloved Son,
suscipere propono, revelata tandem facie which I now receive under the veil of a
perpetuo contemplari: Qui tecum vivit et sacrament, that I may one day behold Him
regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus, per face to face in glory, Who lives and reigns
omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen. with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever. Amen.
