Key prerequisites
Description
With the integration of agile DevOps principles into its new feature set, IBM
Workload Automation service management solution can boost your organization's
business agility, offering improved process flexibility and accelerated application
development.
• Helps integrate automation into new applications for developers with ready-
to-use business adapters or with embeddable automation through APIs. Fully
functional REST APIs to integrate IBM Workload Scheduler capabilities into
external products and solutions. The REST APIs are programming language
independent and favor easier network configuration and firewall traversal. They
enable exploitation of heterogeneous environments and provide new automation
opportunities with direct impact on productivity.
• Enables streamlined and auditable continuous delivery of scheduling changes.
Version 9.4 of both Workload Scheduler and Workload Automation offers the
following enhancements:
• Enable centralized rich auditing to enable organizations to track, store and report
on the details of scheduling changes. Administrators set the auditing levels and
preferences for their environments, and users provide the required justification
so that the auditing reports are comprehensive and include all changes made in
the systems without additional reviews.
• Gain full control of changes in the scheduling environment with version control.
Workload Scheduler and Workload Automation enable faster release management
through version control. With V9.4, a comparison viewer feature highlights
changes made on a scheduling object that is comparing two versions. For each
scheduling object in the database, such as jobs and job streams, you can view
the history of changes, as well as discover which user made a specific change,
IBM United States Software Announcement 216-513 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2
the timestamp of the change, and a reason for the change. Comparing two
different versions in a comparison viewer also gives you the capability to restore
a previous version. When a business workflow that has always run smoothly
suddenly fails, detecting the change that introduced the problem becomes quick
and easy, and the resolution can be implemented in minimal time.
• Reduce the amount of time it takes to push a code change into production.
Whether they are triggered by a new feature or release, a minor enhancement
stemming from a change request, or an emergency hot fix, code changes need to
be continuously tested, integrated, and built before they can be promoted. Faster
release management is achieved thanks to object stacks (workload application
templates) that can be moved through stages -- typically from development to
staging through to production. The promotion of changes is done automatically,
scheduling the test, build, and integration of the changes. Promoting the changes
from one environment to another is automated through the export and import
of a workload application template. Specify the destination environment for
the import operation and use prompts to obtain approval before the promotion
occurs, if necessary.
• Reduce the difficulty of infrastructure maintenance, especially when negotiating
maintenance windows with different organization and application owners for the
purpose of upgrading servers. Workload Automation has the capability to run or
schedule the agent upgrade directly from the Dynamic Workload Console, or as
an automatic batch activity, which simplifies the control of the overall process.
With V9.4, Workload Automation ensures business and scheduling continuity
when running agent upgrades, allowing ongoing jobs to continue running. The
agent upgrade can run with minimal impact to scheduling activities. The agents
are stopped for the shortest time necessary and the entire upgrade process
is designed to be reliable and fail-safe, with an automatic backup and restore
feature in case of failure. During the brief time agents are stopped, no new
jobs begin execution, but any jobs already running continue to run as planned.
When the upgrade is complete, the agents are restarted and quickly reconnect
with their jobs. The same behavior is applied to agent command-line interfaces
and processes such as conman or composer. After the upgrade, they resume
running regularly. The process is designed to be quick and easy, and it is also
supported by both agent upgrade methods: the twsinst script that you run on
each individual agent workstation, and the centralized agent update that you can
schedule to upgrade multiple agents at a time. And, if anything goes wrong, an
automatic backup and restore feature rolls back the agent to the prior version.
• Increase modeling flexibility with simplified variable passing. Passing variables,
such as the job output or a job property from one job, to be used as input for
the execution of a successive job in the same job stream, has become standard
practice in Workload Scheduler job flows. With V9.4, that capability is extended
to enable passing variables between jobs within the same job stream, as well
as across different job stream instances. Leveraging variable tables, exported
variables from one job can be made available to any successor job, in the same
or in a different job stream. The variable table is defined in a new Variable Table
job plug-in where variables can be added and modified to the variable table. The
Variable Table job is then added to the job stream of the predecessor job.
• Gain more control through the improved user interface for Workload Automation.
Workload Automation V9.4 can bridge heterogeneous workloads and platforms
into a single point of control. This interface is a fundamental component of the
solution. It is intuitive and flexible enough to enable the different automation
users to model, monitor, analyze, and support the IT and business workflows
managed through the systems. The V9 releases feature the Dynamic Workload
Console, a redesigned web user interface of the solution.
With V9.4, the modeling graphical view has been completely redesigned to
offer a modern representation of complex workflows, giving the editor direct
interaction with the objects. Graphical views have been redesigned based on UX
design principles to boost the user experience tailored for user roles and actions.
Information is immediate and more meaningful and allows for quick interaction.
The new design is customizable and responsive. It provides the feedback that you
need and improves interaction, allowing for client-side computation and greater
concurrent user scalability. The use of new colors, background, and simple shapes
IBM United States Software Announcement 216-513 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3
make objects and their relationships easily identifiable. The customizable layout can
be saved for the user. Highlights include:
• Meaningful information
• Quick interaction
• Customizable layout
• Export to PNG file format (portable network graphic)
• Client side computation and greater concurrent user scalability
• Accessibility improvements for the user experience of color-blind users
• Satisfying Requests for Enhancements (RFEs). RFEs give customers the
opportunity to collaborate directly with the product development team and
other users. The team prioritizes and develops new product features based
on proposals made IBM Workload Scheduler customers. V9.4 delivers on the
following requests:
– Enhancements to variable tables that enable character lengths for variable
names and values to be extended to 64 and 1024 characters respectively.
– Variables can now be used to represent file names in the variable table, also
leveraging the new variable character lengths.
– Job logs are now enriched with information about the start time and end time
of job on a dynamic agent that ends in FAIL.
• Automate operations on IBM Cloudant NoSQL database. A new plug-in is
(R)
Workload Scheduler Version V9.3 released two fix packs, Fix Pack 1 and 2, which
in addition to fixes, make available a series of new features and Request for
Enhancements. A complete list of fixes, features, and Request for Enhancements can
be found in the related product readme files:
Fix Pack 1:
• With the new IBM Workload Scheduler plug-in for JSR 352 Java Batch (plug-in
TM
for Liberty), you can schedule, run, and monitor your Java Batch applications and
integrate them into more complex, composite batch workflows.
• IBM Workload Scheduler Plug-in for MQTT. IBM Workload Scheduler integrates
with MQTT to provide centralized management of your "Internet of Things"
devices. MQTT is a publish and subscribe, simple, and lightweight messaging
protocol.
• Scheduling the centralized agent update. You can schedule the centralized update
of multiple agent instances by creating a centralized agent update job, either by
using the Dynamic Workload Console or the composer command line. When a job
runs, it forwards to the master domain manager the Update agent request for all
the fault-tolerant agent or dynamic agent instances that you selected, and then
completes.
IBM United States Software Announcement 216-513 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 4
• IBM i enhancements related to checking for IBM i jobs waiting for a message
reply, viewing the message, and specifying the name of the queue where IBM i
jobs are monitored
• Convert Crontab files and Windows Task Scheduler jobs into IBM Workload
TM
Scheduler job where you can then monitor and schedule them together with all
of your other objects.
• The centralized agent update of multiple fault-tolerant and dynamic agent
instances can now be scheduled using either the Dynamic Workload Console or
the composer command line.
• Dynamic Workload Console graphical view has been improved making external
dependencies easier to view, changing the size of the graphical elements so that
the entire job or job stream name is not truncated, and improving the zoom level
to zoom further on large job streams.
Fix Pack 2:
• OpenWhisk job plug-in: Schedule, monitor, and control the firing of OpenWhisk
triggers and the invocation of OpenWhisk actions.
• Hybrid scheduling and intelligent scheduler: Hybrid dashboard. Choose a mixture
of Workload Automation on Cloud and on Premises and reduce IT infrastructure
costs with hybrid scheduling management. Hybrid Workload Automation allows
you to use a common User Interface to manage both on Premises and on Cloud
engines
• IBM Workload Scheduler What-if Analysis is no longer only a simulation tool. IBM
Workload Scheduler What-if Analysis has been greatly enhanced to allow you to
apply your changes to an actual plan directly from the Gantt view.
• Optimize job flows with smart branching logic. Workload Scheduler enables you
to define jobs to run in a very precise order, sometimes with some jobs waiting
on others to finish successfully before the next one begins. Now you can add
more flexibility to your job flows by choosing which job to run as a result of the
job status or output of a previous job or job stream. The Graphical View displays
your jobs and job streams so that you can easily visualize the relationships
between them, including conditional dependencies.
• IBM Workload Automation has enhanced its integration with Hadoop, by adding
a great new feature: the job plug-in for Apache Oozie. By using the plug-in for
Oozie, it is possible to centrally manage Oozie workflows and Hadoop jobs such
as Hive, MapReduce, Pig, and Sqoop.
• IBM Workload Scheduler security with role-based security model. You can define
and update your security file according to the role-based security model, by
using the Manage Workload Security interface from the Dynamic Workload
Console or the composer command-line program.
• New and improved web interfaces. The Workload Designer and Dynamic
Workload Console interfaces have been redesigned to improve the user
experience. A new Welcome page directs you to the main tasks, providing you
with a single entry point to get you started.

IBM Workload Scheduler 5725-WSH Processor Value Unit
IBM Workload Automation 5725-G80 Monthly Jobs
PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU
entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU
table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and
the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define
a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on
a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.
For more information, visit the Processor Value Unit [PVU] licensing for Distributed
Software website.
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization
capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity
Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using full capacity licensing,
licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor
cores in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the
1
program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently
removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements
sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the
program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules
website.
1
An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or
virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited
through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar
restrictions.
Notes:
• Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being
managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements
required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this
program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
• Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the
following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly,
licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the
processor cores managed by the program.
IBM United States Software Announcement 216-513 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 9
• A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis.
In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the
activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU
entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available
to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere
the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the
referenced program is licensed.

Notes:
• IBM Workload Scheduler for Applications requires licensing for IBM Workload
Scheduler. For the purpose of licensing IBM Workload Scheduler for Applications,
licensing for IBM Workload Scheduler is per-processor core based on the server
on which the IBM Workload Scheduler for Applications product is installed.
There is no longer a 1:1 licensing requirement for IBM Workload Scheduler for
Applications and for IBM Workload Scheduler.
IBM United States Software Announcement 216-513 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 10
• Licensing for IBM Workload Scheduler for Applications is per-processor core on
the server where the application is scheduled.
• For Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) scheduling, entitlements are required
for all of the ERP servers. There is no longer a licensing requirement for ERP
databases.
• For agentless scheduling, where IBM Workload Scheduler manages jobs remotely
on servers where IBM Workload Scheduler agents are not installed, IBM Workload
Scheduler for Applications licenses are required on computers where the
agentless method is managing workload.
• For more information on using IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) to track and
manage IBM Workload Scheduler PVU licenses, refer to the documentation on
IBM Knowledge Center, available on December 9, 2016.
Additional clarification
IBM Workload Scheduler provides three sets of separately orderable and licensed
capabilities, one for the full flexibility and power, termed IBM Workload Scheduler,
and two for a reduced set of functions:
The three capabilities can coexist in a single environment, and the IBM Workload
Scheduler license entitles you to use all end-to-end capabilities (plan-based end-
to-end and simplified end-to-end on any agent) and drive any type of workload
(systems scripts and applications). IBM Workload Scheduler for z/OS agent license
entitles you to use only the limited end-to-end capability of an agent. IBM Workload
Scheduler for Applications license entitles you to use only for Applications workloads,
available December 9, 2016, as listed in IBM Knowledge Center.
Monthly jobs
Monthly Jobs is a unit of measure by which the IBM Workload Automation program
can be licensed. A Job is an object within the IBM Workload Automation program
that cannot be further divided and represents a computing process including all its
subprocesses. The customer licensee must obtain sufficient entitlements to cover
the maximum number of Jobs processed or managed by IBM Workload Automation
in any calendar month, considering the following job count conditions:
• Job count: All jobs processed or managed by IBM Workload Automation are
counted, but the same job (intended as the same task string), counts once if
repeated more than one time during the same day .
• Job count tracking: IBM Workload Automation provides a function that tracks all
launched job historically, and retains it for query and reporting purposes.
Note: The metric for job counting must be applied to the entire environment
managed by a single Master Domain Manager, represented by the production of a
single plan covering the entire managed network.
