Design Statement
The kitchen layout was too small to add components that most new home buyers

would like to see incorporated into a kitchen, like a center island and tall pantry cabinetry.

There also was a window that was 60” in height, and 36 inches wide. This also inhibited

what was able to be done with the kitchen layout. Since there were items that could not

be moved, the only logical approach to the design was to make a U-shaped kitchen layout.

With this being the best approach, the kitchen triangle was easy to establish.

The specifications also called for a microwave oven/range hood combination.

Since I was trying to achieve an industrial look, I added a decorative range hood with a

valance instead of the microwave/hood, and I added a microwave wall cabinet next to the

side-by-side refrigerator. To keep with NKBA guidelines, I placed a dishwasher to the

right of the sink. For the wall cabinetry, I chose open shelf cabinetry to further drive my

industrial aesthetic and I chose a metallic finish for all wall cabinetry.

The next thing that I thought would work in my design was to add a wall with a brick

façade, which also provided a backsplash for the sink on the same wall. I added ceiling

beams, recessed lighting, and a pendant light fixture with a chrome finish to continue my

design concept. I used a beige paint to the adjacent walls to complement the brick façade.

I considered the window treatments and how the design needed some colors to bring the

design together. So, I added some multi-colored blinds as accents and to create a focal

point. The window trims I made black, keeping with my design concept. I wanted to have

some warm tones, so I made the flooring a natural wood tone and the counter top was

brownish hues.

I think I managed to achieve an industrial look by adding the mentioned materials

and I added a round table with chairs that had metallic features. The overall aesthetic was

achieved and the accessories helped me accomplish the look I was going for.
