Deleting iPanel Components from
iCommand Item Grid (Window Menu)
Using the Delete function in the iCommand Item Grid (Figure-1) is a typical method for removing components
from jobs. However, if an iPanel component is selected to be deleted in the Item Grid, as shown in Figure-1 for
example, iCommand displays a warning prompt (Figure-2) to alert you that deleting any iPanels in the job must
be done from within iPanel itself.

Figure-1

Piggyback Base & Cap Truss Creation
Enhancements (iModel Help & iDesign Help)
The iModel & iDesign Piggyback tool now has the ability to create and add both the Base and the Cap trusses
automatically to the Truss List. This occurs once you click the Apply or OK button from the Piggyback Options
dialog window. Once the Base and it's matching Cap truss appears in the Truss List, they are ready to be engin-
eered and saved to the job. Use the iModel and iDesign instructions below for the creation of Piggyback
trusses.

l iModel.

The Piggyback Truss option  is a truss modification tool; therefore, Piggyback conditions are applied to
existing trusses already on the layout.

1. Activate the Piggyback tool from either the Truss menu or by selecting Piggyback Truss from
the Trusses toolbar.
2. At the bottom of the screen, a prompt instructs you to: Select Truss(es) to Piggyback. <Enter> After
Selection. With the mouse cursor positioned within the layout screen, click the right mouse button
to activate a popup menu and choose your selection method from listed. As you select the
trusses to piggyback, they turn red to verify their selection.
3. When you have finished selecting the desired trusses to Piggyback, click <Enter> to continue.
4. Once the Piggyback Options dialog window is opened, specify the applicable options and set-
tings. When finished selecting your options, click the button labeled OK to apply the condition
and close the dialog window, or click the button labeled Apply to apply the condition while leav-
ing the dialog window active. Clicking the Cancel button closes the dialog window with no action
taken.
5. The selected trusses now display the addition of Piggyback Cap trusses on the layout, and the
Truss List reflects two new trusses (i.e. the Base & Cap trusses) for each truss type on the lay-
out selected. The Caps on the layout are drawn ‘offset’ from the Base trusses(es) so it is easy to
tell at a glance they have been added. Each of these new trusses are now ready to be engin-
eered, either by Job Designer or manually in iDesign.

l iDesign.
1. You may either input a New Truss or select an existing truss from the Truss List.
2. Select the Piggyback option from either the Tools menu or the Edit Tools toolbar.
3. Once selected, the Piggyback Options dialog window is activated. When all your selections are
set, click the OK button to continue, or click the Cancel button to halt creation of a Piggyback
truss.
4. Assuming you clicked OK, iDesign automatically generates two trusses: the Base and the Cap,
as indicated in the Truss List.
5. Engineer and Save each of these two truss designs.

BatchCut "SAWFILE" Keyword now
able to include SETUPNUMBERS for
Alpine {type} Syntax (Output Processor Help)
ALPINE0.01, ALPINE3.0.01, ALPINE2.01, and ALPINE3.02.01 (basically any previous ALPINE {type} that
now includes a .01 at the end of the name) have been added to the SAWFILE keyword that now enable the incor-
poration of the SETUPNUMBER.

Note: The highlighted details below reflect the new additions to the Alpine {type} functionality.

l SAWFILE

Syntax: SAWFILE = {type}, {location}, {prefix}, {suffix}, {description}

This SAWFILE= section, which is 2 words without a space between ending with an equals (=) sign, is
used to create a specific sawfile.

o {type}

This first argument field is used to specify the saw type. The following list indicates the saw type
names available for use in the type argument of the SAWFILE syntax:

l ALPINE, ALPINE2, ALPINE3.0, and ALPINE3.02.

ALPINE is the Alpine TRS proprietary file type, and ALPINE3.0 is the Alpine TRS pro-
prietary file type with bevel information included. ALPINE0.01 & ALPINE3.0.01 are the
same, but also include the SETUPNUMBER.

ALPINE2 is also an Alpine TRS proprietary file type, and ALPINE3.02 is also an Alpine
TRS proprietary file type with bevel information included; however, the tag information is
omitted.
ALPINE2.01.&.ALPINE3.02.01.are.the.same,.but.also.include.the.SETUPNUMBER.

Therefore:

ALPINE or ALPINE3.0 TRS file includes the tag: i.e. (Truss label | Tag, Piece label,
Quantity).

ALPINE0.01 or ALPINE3.0.01 TRS file includes the tag plus any SETUPNUMBER: i.e.
(SETUPNUMBER, Truss label | Tag, Piece label, Quantity).

www.alpineitw.com Page - 13 Customer Support: 866-237-2878

ALPINE2 or ALPINE3.02 TRS file does not include the tag: i.e. (Truss label, Piece
label, Quantity).

ALPINE2.01 or ALPINE 3.02.01 TRS file does not include the tag, however, the
SETUPNUMBER is included; i.e. (SETUPNUMBER, Truss label, Piece label,
Quantity).

Note: The ALPINE {type} that incorporates the use of setup numbers only work if you are
using: __SETUPNUMBER__, __SETUPNUMBERSONLY__, __
SETUPNUMBERSONTHELEFT__ keywords.

Note: The iModel BatchCut topic information is found in the software Help Menu labeled: Output Processor
Help. The Table of Contents path = Output Processor / Trusses Tab / Standard Output Section / BatchCut
topic.
To locate the information for the excerpt provided above, single click the Batched Cutting File Details - Batch-
cut.cfg Setup sub-chapter, scroll down and single click the Keywords bullet, scroll down and single click the
SAWFILE bullet, single click on the {type} bullet, and then single click the ALPINE, ALPINE2, ALPINE3.0,
and ALPINE3.02 bullet to view this topic information.

Add Unbalanced Loads (W) & (L)
Fields Hold Their Values (iDesign Help)
In the Unbalanced Load Factors dialog (Figure-1), the values input into the (W) and (L) fields would never stay set
from one truss design to the next. Now, when values are input into the (W) and (L) fields of the Distance and
Pitch of Roof columns they will always remain set to whatever values were last used, until such a time as they
are changed, and then those new values will remain set.

Note: The full documentation for this topic is located in the software Help Menu labeled: iDesign Help. The
Table of Contents path = iDesign Menus & Tools / Loads-Loading / Add Unbalanced Loads topic.

Check Relative Deflections (Settings)
Refer to the bullet explanations below when the Check Relative Deflections option (Figure-1) in the User Deflec-
tion Limits section of the Analysis tab in the Job Settings is Selected or Unselected.

Figure-1

Note: Use of this utility in the Job Settings controls new trusses being created and saved to a job; however, if
you need to use this utility on trusses already saved to the job, the Check Relative Deflections option is located
in the Engineering Options, Misc. tab of iDesign.

l Selected (default & recommended setting).

The truss analysis checks for relative deflection within the truss, and if the analysis determines the rel-
ative deflection exceeds the allowable:

o A Failure Summary prompt is displayed (Figure-2) to alert you that the truss has Excessive Rel-
ative Deflection engineering problems; click the OK button to continue.

Figure-2

www.alpineitw.com Page - 16 Customer Support: 866-237-2878

o Once the truss analysis is run, the PPDefl tab information in the Engineering Results section
does not display any notations regarding excessive relative deflection problems (Figure-3).

Figure-3

o If you continue and Save the truss, the status color of the truss is displayed red within the Truss
List (Figure-4), and a Warning note (Figure-5) is added to your Component Drawing output.

Figure-4 Figure-5

l Unselected .
The truss analysis checks for relative deflection within the truss, and if the analysis determines the rel-
ative deflection exceeds the allowable:

o A Warning prompt (Figure-6) is displayed to warn you that the truss has Excessive Relative
Deflection engineering problems; click the OK button to continue.

Figure-6

www.alpineitw.com Page - 17 Customer Support: 866-237-2878

o Once the truss analysis is run, a Warning note appears in the PPDefl tab information of the Engin-
eering Results panel (Figure-7).

Figure-7

o When the truss is saved, the status color of the truss is displayed green within the Truss List (Fig-
ure-8). This is because the excessive relative deflection was not used as a limiting factor for the
passage of the truss design.

panel. Once you activate the Move Label tool, a prompt at the bottom of the screen instructs you to: Select Label to
Move. Click on a label and it changes color to red and the prompt instructs you to Draw to Where. The label itself
now moves with the movement of the mouse cursor; however, the location of the leader line always stays
centered on the panel (Figure-1).

Once the label is positioned in the location you want it moved to, single click the mouse button to complete the
move. This functionality remains in an active mode status with the prompt continuing to instruct you to: Select
Label to Move. Press the keyboard Esc key or select a different option to turn off the Select Label to Move tool.

l Style.

Click the toggle arrow located at the right end of the Style field to select one of the drop-down option
types: Text or Text-Arrow.

o Text: Selection of the Text option only adds the applicable label at the wall panel (i.e. no label
leader line).

o Text-Arrow: Selection of the Text-Arrow option adds the applicable label and leader line at the
wall panel.

Note: Documentation for this topic is located in the software Help Menu labeled: iPanel. The Table of Contents
path = iPanel Menus & Tools / Labels / Options topic.

www.alpineitw.com Page - 29 Customer Support: 866-237-2878

Prefix Field
The Prefix field located in the iPanel - Labels toolbar, enables you to add a beginning (i.e. Prefix) component to
the label name.
As an example, let's assume the label for all interior panels is going to begin with a Prefix of INT to signify an
interior panel (Figure-1). Once the panels to Label are selected and applied, the Label reflects the Prefix specified
(Figure-2).

Note: The use of a Prefix is optional (i.e. the Prefix field is left blank) and is not required for the application of
Labels to the layout.

path = iPanel Menus & Tools / Labels / Prefix topic.

www.alpineitw.com Page - 30 Customer Support: 866-237-2878

Sequence Field
The Sequence field located in the iPanel - Labels toolbar, is used to specify the starting labeling sequence of the
selected panel(s). This field accepts alphabetic, numeric, and special character input.
When a numeric value is entered (Figure-1), once the labeling is applied the Sequence field reflects the starting
point for the next number available.
When an alphabetical value is entered (Figure-2), once the labeling is applied the Sequence field reflects the start-
ing point for the next alphabetical value, and if the letters applied have gone past Z, the letters repeat (e.g. AA,
AAA,AAA, etc.).

Note: When numeric and alphabetic values are specified in the Sequence field, their values shall increase incre-
mentally as described above.

path = iPanel Menus & Tools / Labels / Sequence topic.

www.alpineitw.com Page - 31 Customer Support: 866-237-2878

Suffix Field
The Suffix field, located in the iPanel - Labels toolbar, enables you to add an ending (i.e. Suffix) component to the
label name. This field accepts alphabetic, numeric, and special character input.
As an example, let's assume that a Suffix is desired that identifies whether a panel is placed on the North, South,
East, or West side portion of the structure. By adding an (N) to the Prefix field (Figure-iP.1), the label identifies a
North side panel location, and by adding a (W) the label identifies a West side panel (Figure-iP.2).

Note: The use of a Suffix is optional (i.e. the Suffix field is left blank) and is not required for the application of
Labels to the layout.

iPanel: View Panel Features
View Panel is a dialog window (Figure-1) used to review panels that you select in a panelized iPanel layout, and
contains tools within the dialog that provide you with viewing and editing capabilities. The panel image routinely
displays dimensions and opening sizes; however, when trusses have been added to the layout in iModel, the
truss location(s) supported by the iPanel are also displayed by an arrow which includes the truss label or tag num-
ber. And if the trusses have been analyzed and saved, their reactions are displayed above the truss location
arrow. Truss locations and reactions colored red indicate a Girder condition.

Note: Although reactions can appear in the display (Figure-1), the panel is not analyzed for vertical load transfer
in iPanel.
You can activate the View Panel dialog using one of the two following methods:
l Double click the cursor on a panelized wall using the left mouse button (LMB).

l Single LMB click the View Panel/Beam icon located on the Main iPanel Toolbar to activate the View
Panel dialog window (Figure-1). Since there is nothing appearing in the dialog, single LMB click a pan-
elized wall to view.

There are three ways to view and identify the blocking types added to a panel:

1. iPanel Layout Top Plate View (i.e. looking down through the top plate(s) of the panel in the layout
view).
o Edge Wise.

When Edge Wise blocking is added to a panel, it is represented by a diagonal line within
the panel between vertical wall panel pieces (Figure-3).

Figure-3
o Flat Wise.

When Flat Wise blocking is added to either the Inside or Outside wall edge of a panel, it
is represented by a diagonal line within the thickness of the blocking located between ver-
tical wall panel pieces (Figure-4).

Figure-4
o Combination of Flat Wise & Edge Wise Blocking in same Panel.

When Flat Wise blocking is added to the wall panel edge, and Edge Wise blocking is
also added further down in the panel, both of these blocking type will be visible between
the vertical wall panel pieces (Figure-5). However, when Edge Wise blocking is added
above the Flat Wise blocking, it obstructs the view of the Flat Wise blocking and is, there-
fore, not visible in the layout top plate view.

Sheathing - Edit Sheathing Toolbar

l Illustration of Sheathing on Wall Panels.

The illustration for Sheathing (Figure-1) on wall panels is reflected by dashed lines and circled numbers.
When dashed lines are red it is an indication sheathing on the wall panel is selected, otherwise gray
dashed lines indicate unselected sheets of sheathing.

Double dashed lines that form an "X" indicate the sheet of Sheathing is a full size sheet (e.g. 4x8, 4x9,
etc.). A single slanted dashed line indicates the sheet of Sheathing is not a full size sheet (i.e. less-than
the standard sizes available in your Sheathing inventory).

In order to clearly identify the sheets of sheathing on a wall panel, each individual sheet displays its sheet
number in a circle. Figure-iP.1 indicates sheet is a full sheet, and is a partial, or less-than full sheet.
