METHOD STATEMENT

FOR THE HYDRAULIC HAMMER

DRIVEN PILING WORKS

1.0 HANDLING AND STORAGE OF PILES

Lift and transport piles after the concrete has attained at least 80% of the design
concrete strength.

The method and sequence of lifting, handling, transporting and storing piles shall
be such that the piles are not damaged. Only the designed lifting and support
points shall be used. During transport and storage piles shall be stored o n adequate
support located under the lifting points of the piles. All piles within a stack shall
be in groups of same length. Pickings of uniform thickness shall be provided
between piles at the lifting points.

2.0 DRIVING OF PILES

2.1 Leaders And Trestles

At all stages during driving and until incorporation in the superstructure the pile
shall be adequately supported and restrained by means of leaders, trestles,
temporary supports or other quid arrangements to maintain position and alignment
and to prevent buckling. These arrangements shall be such that damage to the pile
does not occur.

2.2 Vertical Control Of Pile

Piles shall be pitched accurately in position and verticality of pile is controlled by

spirit level. The verticality shall be counter-checked again by placing two plumb
lines and viewing through them at two different locations.
2.3 Set Up For Raked Pile

The piling rig shall be set by using a template that cut to a required rake. The
horizontal and vertical edge of the template shall be checked by using a spirit
level. After the piling rig has been set and maintained to the required rake, piling
can commence after checking by S.O.’s representative.

2.4 Driving Procedure And Redrive Checks

Each pile shall be driven continuously until the specified set and/or depth has been
achieved. No. of blow counts for every 0.5m penetration shall be taken and
recorded in the piling record. The final set of a pile other than a friction pile to be
recorded as the penetration in millimeters per 10 blows with set graph. A metal
helmet with 150mm timber cushion will be used as protection of pile head during
driving to prevent cracking and splitting. Piles to be driven in an approved
sequence to reduce the effects of heave and lateral displacement of the ground.

Contractor shall inform S.O. without delay if an unexpected change in driving

characteristics is noted. A detailed record of the driving resistance over the full
length of the available pile shall be taken if required.

Contractor shall given adequate notice and provide all facilities to enable S.O. to
check driving resistance’s. A set shall be taken only in the presence of S.O. unless
otherwise approved.

2.5 Final Set

The final set of each pile shall be recorded either as the penetration in millimeters
per 10 blows or as the number of blows required to produce a penetration of
30mm.

When a final set is being measured, the following requirements shall be met.

i) The exposed part of the pile shall be in good condition without damage or
distortion.

ii) The dolly and packing, if any, shall be in sound condition.

iii) The hammer blow shall be in line with the pile axis and the impact surface
shall be flat and at right angles to the pile and hammer axis.

iv) The hammer shall be in good condition and operating correctly.

2.6 Driving Sequence And Risen Piles

Piles shall be driven in an approved sequence to minimize the detrimental effects of

heave and lateral displacement of the ground. When required, levels and
measurements shall be taken to determine the movement of the ground or any pile
resulting from the driving process. When a pile has risen as a result of adjacent
piles being driven, Contractor shall submit to S.O. his proposals for correcting this
and the avoidance of it in subsequent work.

3.0 WELDING FOR PILE JOINT

3.1 Workmanship

i) Cleaning

Prior to welding, the groove face and their adjacent areas shall be completely
cleaned.

ii) When raining, welding shall not be carried out unless it is approved by
S.O.

4.1 RECORDS

Contractor shall keep a record of each completed pile and furnish a copy to S.O. at
a minimum, this record shall include the information given below.

i) Location of each pile with coordinates.

ii) Materials size and length of piles.

iii) Number of blows per penetration depth throughout the pile length.

iv) The final driving resistance in blows or penetration as specified in 2.3.

v) Actual penetration depth.

vi) Errors in position, inclination of the piles or any abnormality whichever

occurs.
