JOHNSON C.

SMITH UNIVERSITY
BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK PLACEMENT
LEARNING CONTRACT AND AGREEMENT DIRECTIONS

The learning contract is a road map for the field instruction experience. The purpose of the learning contract is to:

A. Provide a focus/structure for student learning and supervision over the course of the semester.
B. Provide a basis for evaluation.
C. Provide a measure of accountability.
D. Provide a parallel process experience for students, whom will be developing goals/objectives with clients.

The learning contract is to be developed between the student and the field instructor within the first two weeks of field placement. The
main components of the learning contract is: (1) the learning goals, (2) the learning objectives, (3) activities that you will do to
accomplish learning objectives, (4) projected date of completion of learning goals, and (5) rating of student performance for each
learning goal. (Number 5 is to be completed at the end of the semester).

The following definitions should be utilized when developing the learning contract:

A. Learning Goal – The learning goals are the core competencies and practice behaviors established by the Council on Social
Work Education that are required for all Bachelor of Social Work students to master. Choose three of the practice behaviors
listed under the corresponding core competency to focus on. You can delete the practice behaviors that will not be
incorporated in your final learning contract.
B. Objective – A statement that is specific, performance related, realistic, and observable indicating how you intend to work
toward your learning goal. You should have a mixture of a few objectives that can be met within the first several weeks of the
practicum, and others that will not be completed until the last several weeks.
C. Evaluation – A statement indicating how you plan on evaluating your objectives. You will be required to submit evaluation
documents with the final learning contract at the end of the semester.

Below is a template of how your learning contract should be set up. Please set up your learning contract in this manner.
