ENGR. MARLON D. SOBREVIGA MARCH 10, 2017

The Joint PICE Structural Engineering Seminar and 6th CE Students’ Technical Conference
with the theme: Developing Civil Engineering Minds through Contemporary Advancements in
Structural Engineering was held last March 1, 2017 at the Calbayog City Convention Center. I
took part on the said event as the chairman of the technical committee. I was given the task of
hiring the catering services, preparing the technical equipment for the event, and taking
arrangements for the rent of the venue. As for the pre-event preparations, I also aided in handing
and retrieving solicitations, making meal stubs and table labels. During the event, I helped in aiding
the speakers with respect to their technical needs such as the microphone replacing, visual aid
presentations, and time management. I also helped in some minor issues like running errands for
printer installers and printing some documents. After the event, I helped in cleaning up, returning
borrowed equipment, and closing some payments of rentals.
I have obtained only a couple of knowledge from the morning presentations due to my
errands. The first presenter was Jayruel R. Delabajan, MEM, MEng’g-SME. His topic was about
the deterioration and rehabilitation of actual structures. So all structures, whatever it may be, are
bounded to deteriorate. In the deterioration process, there are various stages namely: lnitiation
stage; Propagation stage; Acceleration stage; and Deterioration stage. Each of these stages require
different prediction of deterioration, inspection, evaluation, remediation, and recording due to their
differences in characteristics. There are also various causes of deterioration. These are corrosion
of steel reinforcement, freezing and thawing, acid attack, and sulfate attack. There are also those
which happen before service like for example the defects caused by inappropriate construction. He
also showed signs or symptoms of deterioration like cracking, spalling of cover, efflorescence,
rusting, cracking due to shrinkage, pop outs, scaling, and cracking caused by Alkali-Silica
reactions. He ended his discussion by showing some remedy techniques for those deterioration
processes like surface coating, resin injection, increasing the section of member, and retrofitting.
The second speaker was Ray D. Ramilo, BSc(CEng), M.Eng. His topic was structural
forensics. He first defined the term forensic engineering which is the application of engineering
principles and methodologies to answer questions of fact. It is the basis of considering the truth
behind certain consequences after construction. He then related forensic engineering with its
application to the field which is finding the reason for the failure of a structure. He considered
several factors or causes of such errors. After he stated those factors, he then talked about the
liability and the law covered by it. It tells whether who was responsible and should be held
accountable for such failure. Finally, he showed two examples from his works. One was a case
study on the collapse of a water tank tower and the other was the spontaneous breaking of tempered
glass. He explained how he, together with his team, did a series of processes of checking errors
from design phase to construction phase and how they found out what went wrong with those
projects.
The final speaker before lunch was Ernesto J. Guades, Ph.D. He discussed green
engineering by the use of geopolymer concrete. He showed that the production of cement was very
harmful due to smoke emissions and that it consumes too much of our natural resources. Hence,
he introduced the use of fly-ash as replacement for cement and that the concrete produced by such
is called geopolymer concrete. He showed related researches regarding geopolymer concrete, it’s
advantages and disadvantages, and also it’s applications. And finally, he showed on-going and
present literatures on the advancements of geopolymer technology.
After luch, the seminar resumed with Dr. Villaseñor with the topic about the advancements
of concrete materials. Dr. Villaseñor started with the introduction of super-plasticizers. These
allow concrete to be made with low wáter-cement ratio, good workability, and high strength. He
also showed ways of prolonging service life of reinforced concrete. Such techniques were coating
reinforcement with epoxy, the cathodic protection of reinforced concrete, and surface coating of
concrete. He also introduced the technology about self-healing concrete which was made posible
through the use of a certain bacterial. He ended his discussion with the topic on green concrete and
the new curriculum on civil engineering.
The next speaker was Engr. Danilo A. Domingo, F. ASEP, ISSEP. His topic was on the
optimized design of reinforced concrete structures. He showed an actual case study as an example
for his presentation. They considered the design constraints, parameters, and criteria to be met. He
showed designing techniques by the use of softwares and computer-aided analysis of structures.
As for the detailing and designs, he also made use of softwares. Such technique is called “Building
Information Modelling”.
The third speaker in the afternoon was Christian R. Orozco, RCE, MSc. He discussed field
testing covered by American Concrete Institute. He showed that field testing should be done by an
ACI certified technician. He also stated some basic information on the proper testing and sampling
for field tests. He then showed other basic tests required in the field like concrete slump, unit
weight, and temperature. And finally, he showed how to get certification from the ACI in order to
be a certified field technician.
As a whole, the Joint PICE Structural Engineering Seminar and 6th CE Students’ Technical
Conference was a good and informative event for me even if I was not able to hear completely
every speaker’s presentation. I was not only able to learn educational knowledge regarding
structural engineering and the current advancements but also acquired experience in handling and
managing things required to make such an event a success. I learned simple yet needed knowledge
which cannot be learned just by reading textbooks. Like for example taking courage to assist
people, talking business, handling time and people, and making last minute debugs under pressure.
The event was a satisfying one for me.
