2018-19 Resource Guide

A Teaching Artist in every classroom.

That’s our vision for 21st-century teaching and learning.
This catalog offers hundreds of innovative, arts-based learning opportunities
that meet rigorous academic standards and empower students to develop
critical thinking skills that will guide them through the academic, social,
personal, and professional challenges of their lifetimes.

But our work is larger than this catalog. With school administrators,
classroom teachers, and community program directors as partners, our
Teaching Artists collaborate to affect meaningful change and understanding
in the lives of youth everyday.

Who will you invite to collaborate with you?

What makes Arts for Learning unique?
Teaching Artists.
Our Teaching Artists are professionals with two distinct
specializations—they are experts in their chosen art forms but
are also highly experienced educators.

As artists, they deeply understand the process of making.

They know that making takes time, choice and ownership,
modeling, repeated practice, feedback, and opportunities to
not quite get it right and go back again to revise. The process
of making is, really, parallel to the process of learning. This is
perhaps why these artists are also drawn to teaching, and why
they approach teaching with a student-centered mindset and
unquenchable passion for inquiry.

The programs in this catalog are starting points, seeds in a

garden of opportunity. The content and delivery of these

and certification process. But what is described here barely
scratches the surface of what our Teaching Artists can
provide. Invite them into your classroom in the spirit of
collaboration, to think together about how art might help
students see and understand differently, to address the big
questions and hard concepts in any subject matter. You—and
your students—will not be disappointed.

Fundraising Opportunities
Need help paying for programs? Ask us!

Local Foundations Many school districts, towns, and townships have education
foundations with grants to support curriculum enrichment
programs that schools and teachers can apply for. Not a
grant writer? Not a problem! Arts for Learning would be
delighted to assist your school in drafting a strong application.

All Those Titles! Did you know that the arts are now included in the definition
of a “well-rounded education”? This means you can use
money from Title I, II, III, and IV to support arts-integrated
programs and professional development offered by Arts for
Learning. Contact your designated program director to see
how you can make the titles work for your school!

Fundraising Are you wondering how students can be more involved?

Consider our Run for the Arts fundraiser. This fundraiser is a
fun way to engage students in physical activities that raise
money to support Arts for Learning programing at their
school. You can also contact your program director to discuss
other exciting fundraising options.
