This project abstract proposes an alternative image compression and decompression method using Gaussian derivatives instead of discrete cosine transformation within the JPEG framework. The proposed Gaussian derivative based method could yield a compression and decompression technique that is twice as fast as the standard DCT method used in JPEG, while maintaining essentially equal image quality. The abstract also lists the software requirements as Java 1.6 and development tools like NetBeans or Eclipse running on Windows XP, along with minimum hardware requirements of a 600MHz processor, 256MB of RAM, and 30GB hard disk.
